Macroscale And Microscale Organic Experiments: Text with Student CD-ROM ReviewI received this required text in prime shape from Amazon.com, first. Amazon always does such a wonderful job of getting you the product you need in good shape when you need it. The product itself? Very good explanations of how the glassware goes together, what to do, how to do it, and all with a good explanation of WHY. WHAT you are doing, WHY you are doing it, and HOW it works are chief among the reasons I like the explanations of the experiments. It does not give TOO MUCH away, however. You do still have to perform the experiments and come to a conclusion as to what the UNKNOWN was, if that happens to be the case, and other mysteries such as that, but in terms of learning, it is excellent! And the experiments are neatly divided into the Macroscale and the Microscale procedures. This is obvious, but it should be in this case. "In this Experiment" is a new feature that appears before every microscale experiment. It presents the objective of the experiment and keeps students from getting bogged down in the minute details of experimental procedures.

This would seem to place it as a popular work for the ornamental design of the previous decade (Victorian, etc). The second edition of 1933 was made over by an author named Amor Fenn who rearranged some chapters and added more about borders. The basic concepts of pattern design (i.e. wallpaper, rugs, etc.) are explained in that endearing early 20th century patter that turned everything around so they could say 5 words in 20; pre-entertainment-overload days! I took these drafting examples right into Photoshop and Illustrator and created several rough MacIntosh like Victorian wallpapers in a short time... copy/paste, flip, and snap-to made this an easy trial. Taking the same trials and thinking 100 years into the future made web background pattern construction a breeze. Cool. ...and everything in between, this could get fun. Day, was conversant with his work and in sympathy with his aims and methods. Consequently, the book for the first time since its appearance has received a thorough overhaul the order of the chapters has been rearranged, and that on Borders a subject Mr Fenn has made particularly his own has been transformed and re-illustrated. Calculus and Its Applications plus MyMathLab Student Starter Kit (9th Edition) ReviewI teach a high school Calculus class for kids who are capable/competent mathematicians, but not really interested in the AP level at an independent school. We like Marv Bittinger's books because they provide a nice balance of applications and connections without losing sight of the math. We continue to use this out-of-date book because it is more readable than most Calculus texts and strikes a nice balance between the rigor of the math and applications that help students to feel a connection to the ideas. The organization of the material is pretty good, although I often salt in the introduction of simple trigonometric functions throughout my instruction, rather than waiting until the end of the course, where it appears in the book. We have found that our students have a lot of fun with the problems about exponential growth and decay, particularly the application of the laws of cooling in solving murders. It seems a little odd to nearly finish differentiation before exploring logarithms and then have to go back and consider derivatives again, but I have gotten used to that. Economics Today plus MyEconLab plus eBook 2-semester Student Access Kit (14th Edition) ReviewI'm a college graduate planning on going to Grad School in the next year or so. I've also spent some years in the military, so I would assume that I have some knowledge in what makes a book good/bad in terms of explaining what it's supposed to teach.
This textbook is horrible and I feel sorry for any freshman/sophomore/AP Economics student out there who is required to use this book for their economics class. The explanations and examples in this book are either vague or aren't explained very well. There are times when I'll spend an hour on a concept because its explanations are poorly written.
If you are part of the unlucky group who has to use this for text, get ready to do some intense reading just to understand what the authors are talking about. I can't wait for this quarter to be over. On the bright side, it comes with a workbook that does a pretty good job of preparing you for the tests as long as the teacher uses the questions from the manual that they use.
