The NCV Student Bible: Engage Your Mind. Renew Your Spirit. ReviewThe NCV started out as a bible for the deaf or deaf version, easy to read version, and also International Children's Bible with reading level grade 3.
The current NCV (1991) for adults is at reading level grade 5.
NCV was started by world bible translation center (wbtc.org) and is affiliated with the Disciples of Christ (Churches of Christ) of the Restoration Movement so it does have a slight bias.
NCV used to be owned by Word Publishing. Thomas Nelson acquired Word Publishing in 1993.
Nelson now owns the NCV and does not give the complete history of the NCV. Corporations have the habit of hiding the truth to boost sales and increase profits.
NCV was the pioneer in the use of
brothers and sisters
instead of just
brothers
and did gender neutral translations before the NIV and the NLT.
It is still not completely gender neutral since men are still often mentioned ahead of the women so men still get top billing over the women.
Word Publishing did a popular youth bible (with devotionals and other notes) by pairing it with their NCV in 1991. The 2nd edition was a UK edition from the 2000s and is by authenticmedia.co.uk and is still available in the UK.
Unfortunately, authenticmedia.co.uk lost the permission to use the NCV for their 2010s edition and for their 2010s youth bible edition, they plan to use the ESV. They also plan to add more types of notes.
I used the Youth Bible first edition in the 1990s and it is still one of my favorite bibles.
Nelson's NCV Student Bible gives life applications and also biography, explanations, etc.
The copyright page says Nelson now owns the NCV 2005.
Nelson's Student Bible was done in 2006.
It is possible that Nelson decided to compete with the NCV Youth Bible of authenticmedia.co.uk.
