A Course in Miracles: Text, Workbook for Students, Manual For Teachers ReviewI am not one of those people who write book reviews just to get my picture on the about me page on amazon. In fact this is the only review that I have ever written. I was prompted to write it because, as I read the some of the more negative reviews of this book, it was quite obvious that most of these people, who wrote these reviews, had not read this book. I don't know why they felt the need to write the derogatory things about this material that were written, but I'm certain that they did not read this book, before writing there review of it. I have read this material; I have studied it for over a year. At first glance the concepts it spoke of seemed at the very least, unlikely. They certainly did not match up with the formula consensus reality had given me to work out the problems that I encountered in my life. That really didn't matter to me by that time because the old formulas had not served me that well anyway. If you are happy with everything about your life this is not a book that you should be reading. If by chance, there are aspects of your life that seem to trouble you, then this is a book that you should be reading. If a year ago you had told me that one simple book held the key to every single problem that I was faced with in my life, I would have laughed in your face, and thought that you must be a fool to say such a thing. Yet after a year of working with the concepts that this book teaches, I feel more strongly about there ability set things right in my life than ever. I came into this encounter with this material a jaded skeptic, who believed in nothing. I had tried, and rejected nearly every path, seeing truth in none of them. Yes, each seemed at first to be truth, but the initial lift that they gave proved not to stand the test of time. This material is different, It seeks to correct the errors in thinking that are currently causing the conflicts, and disappointment in our lives before they can happen. It also shows the folly of approaching the idea of love from the conventionally acceptable way. That is, reserving love only for those we have judged worthy of it. It has taught me that this is not love at all, it is only judgment. This is not a book that you can sit down and read in a night, or even in a week. The concepts that it teaches are so fundamentally different from the ones that are currently causing all the problems in your life, that it will take some time for you to readjust them. Perhaps years, After all how long has it taken you to get to this point where you truly longed to find a better way. Did you really expect it would happen over night? I gave this book 5 stars only because I wasn't given the option of giving it 1,000 stars. If this book can help someone as lost as I was, it can most likely help you too. Do You Need a Guru: Understanding the Student--Teacher Relationship in an Era of False Prophets ReviewLikely to be controversial and at the very least provocative, Mariana Caplan's Do You Need a Guru: Understanding the Student-Teacher Relationship in an Era of False Prophets is an invaluable resource for any spiritual seeker who is considering or who is already involved in a guru-disciple relationship. In fact, if you have been outright opposed to such an arrangement, you may find this book an eye-opener. Yes, we have seen many scandals on the spiritual scene, many abuses of power, but we Westerners have also been enculturated to protect our independence and individualism at all costs, perhaps causing us to miss out on one of the most transformational relationships of our lives.
Weaving together her personal journey, extensive knowledge of psychological projection and power dynamics from her years as a psychotherapist, and interviews with teachers and students alike, Caplan makes the case for having a guru, emphasizing that the greatest benefits come from engaging the relationship as a conscious disciple. Her finely tuned discrimination continues to feed me as it did with her Halfway up the Mountain: The Error of Premature Claims to Enlightenment. She tends to pose questions for the reader to consider, rather than revealing black and white or even gray answers. I was initially concerned that her anecdotes about her early encounters with New Age shamans, wannabe gurus, etc., would be distracting. Ultimately, however, I found these sections of the book to be refreshingly honest, poignant, funny and all too familiar!
While she never lets spiritual teachers off the hook with respect to their own integrity and their immense responsibility in shepherding their students through the labyrinths of the path, she insists that the more responsibility we as students take in selecting and relating, committing and surrendering to our teachers, the greater and richer our spiritual progress. Reading this book gave me a whole new embodied sense of how conscious surrender to the teacher could be an act of maturity, integrity and great strength, rather than a replay of childhood patterning around authority figures. At the same time, she never suggests that this path is easy or without its dangers, but for me she also fueled a yearning that makes a "safe" life feel like a death sentence! Kabbalah for the Student ReviewTHE GOOD: Although made for use with their website and online videos (all free), B'nei Baruch's collection of Kabbalistic texts can be studied individually or with a group. The texts are all translated from Hebrew and are otherwise difficult-to-impossible to find in English. At Amazon's price, it's a steal!
THE NOT-SO-GOOD: Some have criticized B'nei Baruch's translations in the past as leaving out key parts to promote their own agenda. I do not know Hebrew, so I can offer no personal experience. There have also been accusations and suspicions that B'nei Baruch is a cult, and there are certainly some oddities within the group. Again, though, I cannot personally verify this to be true--but as with any spiritual group, it is important to do background checks and be comfortable with what one is getting into.
OTHER NOTES: If you are a beginner, you should probably hold off on getting this textbook. Once you have progressed to the point where you are ready for more challenging concepts, get this book. If you are a student of B'nei Baruch, this textbook is obviously a must have. If you are a student of the Kabbalah Centre, this textbook will do you no good--the teachings are not compatible, not matter what the Kabbalah Centre claims.Kabbalah for the Student OverviewThe great Kabbalists, Rav Yehuda Ashlag, and his son and successor, Rav Baruch Ashlag, offer modern readers valid answers to life's most vital question: What is the meaning of my life? Their interpretations of The Book of Zohar and The Tree of Life explain how we can benefit by using the ancient wisdom of Kabbalah on a day-to-day basis. Additionally, clear illustrations accurately depict the evolution of the Upper Worlds as Kabbalists experience them.
