Perspectives on College Student Suicide (Death, Value and Meaning) ReviewAs a non-traditional (i.e. older) college student and father of two adolescent boys, I found Mr. Rickgarn's book an excellent treatise on the subject. Unlike the college textbook that I was exposed to during a Psychology of Suicide class that I took in 2004, PERSPECTIVES ON COLLEGE STUDENT SUICIDE is written in a manner that people of all ages can understand and benefit from.Using real-life examples from his twenty plus years working with students at a private liberal arts college and at the University of Minnesota, Mr. Rickgarn lays the foundation by providing the reader with the awareness needed to recognize the behavioral, emotional, and verbal clues associated with a suicidal individual. He then walks the reader through the intervention process and includes a practical list of Do's and Don'ts gleaned from his years of campus experience. A chapter on postvention addresses the steps that can be taken by both individuals and institutions to intervene on behalf of survivors in the aftermath of a suicide.
Mr. Rickgarn's PERSPECTIVES ON COLLEGE STUDENT SUICIDE should be required reading for all college students and parents of adolescents and young adults to help them recognize suicidal individuals they may encounter within their circles of concern and guide them through the intervention process.Perspectives on College Student Suicide (Death, Value and Meaning) OverviewI've decided on Thursday. Actually I picked Thursday a couple of days ago and I'm just trying to see how it sits. It really is hard to make myself wait, to walk around, talk to people, make plans for next week or next month. In a way it feels good to have made the decision but it's also very scary too. Do I really want to die? That's what these 4 days are for, to try to discern that better.--a student's diary.Presenting the subject of college student suicide in a somewhat different manner. With the words of college students as they speak, write and think about their suicidal experience, the author creates a group of three dimensional personages who pop-up from this two dimensional page and become real individuals who can heighten our awareness of the effect suicide has upon individuals and the campus as an entity.Throughout this book, the perspective of the student will be the dominant focus. Using this perspective and other pertinent materials, both para-professional and professional persons will gain insight and information on how to appropriately act and react to suicidal situations on campus.Lastly, we draw attention to the perspective of how we view the current suicide rate, the second leading cause of death in the college age population. While since 1980 the calls for suicide prevention programs has subsided, the rate has not decreased. Most disturbing is that we, as a society have come to accept this as normal. By deeming this normal, we are denying that suicide is really a problem. It is hoped that the materials in this book will challenge the concept that we are going to view these elevated rates as our new normalcy. And most of all that the materials will challenge an activist attitude among all members of the academic community.
