Leading in Worship: A Sourcebook for Presbyterian Students and Ministers Drawing Upon the Biblical and Historic Forms of the Reformed Tradition ReviewJohnson's handbook, though a tad expensive, is an excellent contribution to the reformed pastor's worship library. It delivers exactly what it promises - a sourcebook of biblical and historic material to enable todays pastor to conduct a worship service "reformed according to scripture".
Included in the material are a modern rendering (and brief history) of the collects from the 1689 "Liturgy of Comprehension" - a noble though failed attempt to return the presbyterians to the fold of the Church of England by responding to historic concerns about the Book of Common Prayer.
Other historic contributions from Richard Baxter's Savoy liturgy and others round out the work and compliment Rev. Johnson's discussion of reformed liturgics.
Unlike Hugh Old's books, this is not primarily a history for students but a working manual for the practitioner. It is also vastly different from .The Worship Sourcebook sold with it atop the page as a "package" deal. I believe people will tend to gravitate towards one or the other. The "Worship Sourcebook" though huge arguably does not contain as much practical information as Johnson's smaller manual. Perhaps that's just because this smaller manual is easier to navigate and does not try to produce a range of material for the church year. Nor does Johnson's manual seem to cater to those loving soft and warm turns of phrase.Leading in Worship: A Sourcebook for Presbyterian Students and Ministers Drawing Upon the Biblical and Historic Forms of the Reformed Tradition Overview
