I didn't think much of it at the time, but as worked progressed (I am a grade school math books editor myself) I found that the UCSMP Everyday Mathematics Student Reference Book was superior to the text that I was currently working on. Student Reference Book for "Everyday Mathematics," Grade 3 ReviewFast and easy transaction, just what I needed.
Owning a copy of the Student Reverence Book is a great idea because parents can thumb through it and see how each topic is being taught in the classroom, this is a good way to get a better understanding of what your child is learning, which is especially important with the Everyday Math because it is so different from the way that most parents were taught math.

Everyday Mathematics Student Reference Book, Grade 4 (University of Chicago School Mathematics Project) ReviewThis book was very important for two reasons:
a.) if you have not gone to grammar school in the past 10 years (and most parents have not! :) )you may not be familiar with "Everyday Math" which is what is being taught in many school systems and is VERY different than the math we had (I'm 40+).
Having this book on hand (a duplicate of what 4th graders use in school) will give you an explanation of what the methods are behind the calculations so that you can help your children with their homework (without confusing them with YOUR methods)
b.) Buy this book to keep at home so that your 4th grader not only does not have to keep carrying this heavy book back and forth in their backpack but also to make sure they haven't forgotten it at school-
