Microeconomics: Private Markets and Public Choice plus MyEconLab plus eBook 1-semester Student Access Kit (7th Edition) ReviewThere are many micro texts on the market, and few really stand out. Ekelund has good discussions of entrepreneurship and public choice. Few other texts bother much with entrepreneurship and public choice. Heyne is similar in content, but comes up short on graphics. Gwartney and Stroup is about the closest thing to Ekelund. Of course, many texts mention public choice, along with private choice. Ekelund takes public choice seriously (as do G+S). This is important, because old style texts (Samuelson, McConnell...) present a distorted view of the world.
Most texts downplay or ignore entrepreneurship. This is a major mistake. Entrepreneurs play a major role in capitalism, yet economists somehow came to ignore them during the mid and late twentieth century. Ekelund remedies this deficiency in modern economics (along with Heyne). If anything, I would like to see the authors expand their discussion of entrepreneurship.
Students have few complaints about this book. It is well written, and about as interesting as one can expect from an economics text. All economics instructors should consider Ekelund for their classes. Students should look for class sections that use Ekelund (or Gwartney and Stroup).

The authors teach students to apply economic concepts not only to key policy decisions like taxes, inflation, and free trade, but also to personal decisions such as household finance, marriage, and career choices. The Seventh Edition is enhanced by MyEconLab, the online homework system featuring automatically graded graphing problems and proven tutorial tools.
