Yookoso An Invitation to Contemporary Japanese (Student Edition) Media Edition ReviewHaving taken quite a number of language courses, I think that this book is fairly well done for beginning learners. It explains the grammar fairly good and has a nice amount of vocabulary.
My only complaints are that the "dialogues" in the book force you to keep looking down at the bottom of the page for English translation. Also it gets wordy with its "grammatical" terms like "past plain non negative polite tense." Geez.. Why not just say "past tense polite" it can get a bit confusing..

Grammar: A Student's Guide ReviewI'm a linguistics student and I also study German and I find this book extremely helpful. I like the fact that entries are well-explained and are organized alphabetically. Moreover there are short exercises that are great for gauging one's understanding of the material. I actually think the book can be improved by expanding these exercises. Another great thing about the book (especially for a linguistics student) is that it gives examples from languages other than English. This further explains the grammatical phenomenon being discussed.
This book is a great reference but I think it can be improved by adding more entries. For example, the book covers tense but not aspect. As a linguistics student I've been trying to find some book that would explain this concept as well as this book explains so many grammatical phenomena.
In conclusion, I'm very happy I found this book. I really hope they expand it and add more exercises.
