Yookoso An Invitation to Contemporary Japanese (Student Edition) Media Edition ReviewHaving taken quite a number of language courses, I think that this book is fairly well done for beginning learners. It explains the grammar fairly good and has a nice amount of vocabulary.
My only complaints are that the "dialogues" in the book force you to keep looking down at the bottom of the page for English translation. Also it gets wordy with its "grammatical" terms like "past plain non negative polite tense." Geez.. Why not just say "past tense polite" it can get a bit confusing..

Vis-a-vis: Beginning French (Student Edition) ReviewThe setup of this textbook is pretty standard for college-level language books. An added bonus would be that the page numbers are spelled out in French next to the numerals (giving the student extra practice on pronouncing numbers).
The language used in the text is clear and simple and, if the student is really determined to learn French, they can do it with this text (or, at the very least, get a working knowledge of the language). You can also get glimpses of French culture from the snippets throughout the book.
The accompanying workbook/lab manual is very helpful in strengthening your knowledge and usage of French through extra exercises and is a must have with this textbook.

Study Smarter, Not Harder - Think Like a Genius Straight A+ Student ReviewI am a college freshman and bought this book/DVD after getting my first semester report card. I find college is way harder than high school. Even though I spent a lot of time studying and in the library this past semester, my grades didn't show it. I looked for something that might help me! I was intrigued by the subtitle of this book "Study smarter, not harder, using the simply genius strategies of top students." So I bought it. I watched the DVD twice and read the book twice also! It was so eye opening! The students you meet make it look so easy. And now I understand why. There is stuff on time management and how to break down assignments that is useful, but what really hit home for me was how they THINK about school. Maybe it seems obvious to others, but the section that had the biggest impact for me was on setting goals and having good 'guiding questions.' These students all had goals of getting their work done quickly so they had time to do other activities they liked. That goal made them more focused in class and when they sat down to do their homework. And they tell you exactly how they do it! The best part is that I left feeling like I could follow their strategies and do it too. Maybe that's the genius part. I head back to class next week and am going to apply all of the strategies I learned. My goal is to get Straight A's this semester and have time to enjoy it. In all seriousness, I think this DVD and book should be required reading/viewing for all students. The Thinking Student's Guide to College: 75 Tips for Getting a Better Education (Chicago Guides to Academic Life) ReviewThe other night I got one of those emails from unknown students which just starts "Hey" and continues with some request (usually to be admitted to one of my oversubscribed classes). My immediate reaction is to ignore (that was my wife's advice) but this time I just decided to do something different. I wrote back explaining the over-subscription situation, and finished with this "By the way, you might want to address people you haven't met more formally in future: I don't find it irritating but many will" (which is a lie, I do find it irritating, but there's no need to tell her that). My original version had more verbiage in it, but my 14 year old (whose missives to teachers are like business letters) told me to take it out on the grounds that "she'll never do it again, but she'll be scared to meet you".
I was prompted to do this by Andrew Roberts' The Thinking Student's Guide to College: 75 Tips for Getting a Better Education (see tip 53). The central idea is that students need a map of how to get the most out of college, and that lots of them arrive not understanding key things. Why not just make it explicit for her?
In fact I don't currently have a copy of the book, because each copy I get goes to the next high school senior who walks through the door (which an alarming number of them seem to be doing these days). As suggested by this, 75 Tips would be a great Christmas present for the college-bound high school seniors and college freshmen of your acquaintance.
Roberts divides the book into 9 sections--an explanation of how universities work; tips for choosing a college (upshot - don't make such a meal of it, you'll like wherever you go pretty much); tips on choosing classes (including the sensible tip not to take more than a couple of classes with any professor--because most of us have at most 2 classes worth of learning to impart) and on choosing a major; tips on being successful (including the excellent advice, too often neglected, to study with other people); on interacting with professors (don't address then in your first email with a "hey", go to their office hours (I always tell students this, and they say they have had experiences of being distinctly not wanted, and relax when I point out that if he really wants to get rid of you you can leave and he won't remember you), also, get to know at least one professor reasonably well, which, I should say, is brilliant advice but not entirely easy to follow at a place like mine); what to do with your extra-curricular time; whether and when to go to graduate school; and a final section explaining how professors behave and what incentives they are responding to (they want to research not teach, and teach graduate students not undergraduates--a friend who recently graduated from an Ivy-ish institution told me that in his address to them on the first day of freshman year the Provost just told them that they should know that Professors would have no interest in them).
The tips are each easily digestible--if you have trouble reading the book you should maybe postpone going to college. My guess is that it will be read by parents more than students, but especially parents whose experience of college is 5 years or less (or none) would do well to read it to guide their offspring. But even those of us who know the college world well will only give at most half these tips to their kids, partly because some won't occur to us, and partly because others ("don't address a professor with "hey" in your first email to them) seem blindingly obvious. Apparently not.
I should probably disclose that the author sent me the manuscript completely out of the blue a couple of years ago (I've never met him) and I almost instantly gave him a good number of comments on it (as he acknowledges in the acknowledgments). There's one thing that I now regret: the phrases "rape" or "sexual assault" don't appear in the index, and if I were giving comments now I would press him hard to discuss sexual violence on campus. But I was much less aware of the issue then than I thankfully am now.
By the way, the student in question did reply, almost immediately. She said "Dear Professor Brighouse, thanks for the tip, I will utilise it in future. Hopefully I'll be able to learn more from you in your class" which showed a willingness to learn and a slight cheekiness that I rather appreciated. Maybe I should give her the book. I have been very close to only a few undergraduates in my career, though I try harder these days (and my increasingly elderly demeanor seems to induce trust). I forwarded the exchange (stripped of the name etc) to a current undergraduate who is one of the handful whom I've known, and has known me, best (very well indeed), knowing she'd laugh, because after 4 years and numerous detailed email and personal conversations she simply can't address, or even refer to, me as anything other than Professor Brighouse.

Biblical Hebrew for Students of Modern Israeli Hebrew ReviewAs a Rabbi and adult educator, this book is the best by far I have yet found for teaching Biblical Hebrew to anyone with a background (even a relatively basic one) in Modern Hebrew. It explains clearly particular biblical forms (such as the jussive, eg.) and the differences between Biblical and Modern Hebrew. I think the text would be improved if it had an index to all of the charts. Brettler puts an unusual weight on the ability to compose/write in Biblical Hebrew, which will only be helpful for the few students for whom the mental challenge will reinforce their recognition of Biblical Hebrew forms and translation of texts. Other students will find it confusing, since they will never have a practical use for writing in Biblical, rather than Modern Hebrew. However, the structure of the book is sound and the verses for translation exercises in each chapter are well-chosen. Even American Israelis would find it useful in learning how Biblical Hebrew is different than their native tongue.
This book is not a perfect choice for students working to learn on their own, but it would serve the purpose. It is a fabulous course selection or choice for an individual working with a tutor. One must possess, in addition to this book, his/her own copy of an accurate English translation of Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible)--such as the "new" JPS. Also recommended is a good dictionary of Biblical Hebrew, such as Brown-Driver-Briggs (which is also made more accessible by separate indexes, etc.).
This book does not (at this time) come with any support materials for instructors.
Finally, I just want to let potential students of Biblical Hebrew know that I strongly recommend studying Modern Hebrew first, since learning a living language engages more learning modalities. I have found that students (Christian or Jewish) who study Biblical Hebrew first--without a strong foundation in reading and pronouncing basic Modern Hebrew--are rarely able to read confidently and accurately out-loud and sometimes find themselves embarrassed in academic settings.Biblical Hebrew for Students of Modern Israeli Hebrew OverviewThis is the first textbook written for the purpose of teaching biblical Hebrew to college-level students who already know some modern, Israeli Hebrew. Marc Brettler provides a clear, comprehensive book with numerous well-constructed exercises to help students either make the transition from modern Israeli Hebrew to biblical Hebrew or deepen their understanding of biblical Hebrew. The book is also ideal for individuals who might like to study independently, and for serious Jewish adult-education programmes. Biblical Hebrew for Students of Modern Israeli Hebrew is unique in its emphasis on phonology, based on the conviction that a strong grounding in phonology makes it possible to learn biblical Hebrew grammar in a much more systematic fashion. This method also allows verbal conjugations to be taught much more quickly and systematically. Although the text is not inductive, it uses authentic biblical texts throughout to illustrate fundamental points, and it contains many biblical texts in the exercises. Students progressing through the book will quickly be encouraged by a sense of accomplishment as they encounter and understand well-known biblical passages.
