McCormick on Evidence (Hornbook Series; Student Edition) ReviewMy professor suggested this book and deemed it the "Bible on Evidence". I bought it and it is. A great book that will clear up many of your questions. If you don't understand what your law professor is saying, this book will make it clearer.McCormick on Evidence (Hornbook Series; Student Edition) OverviewThis single-volume treatise is largely free of citations to authority, but retains the most notable footnotes. Topics covered include preparing and presenting evidence, cross-examination, and the procedure for admitting and excluding evidence. Discusses privilege against self-incrimination, privilege concerning improperly obtained evidence, scientific evidence, and demonstrative evidence. Reviews authentication, the hearsay rule, burdens of proof, and presumptions. Text also identifies current issues.

Ivy Briefs: True Tales of a Neurotic Law Student ReviewI am a pre-law advisor. For years, I recommended that my pre-law students read the classic law-school memoir: One-L, by Scott Turow. Several of my students who have gone on to law school have told me, though, that reading One-L actually hurt them, because it scared them so much. They also found it somewhat inaccurate (probably because law professors are rethinking their use of the Socratic method since Turow's time). My new recommendation: Ivy Briefs. In fact, I will be making Ivy Briefs required reading in any class that is even somewhat related. It provides a look into how lawyers are socialized but it certainly won't scare anyone: Ivy Briefs had me laughing aloud.
In short, after graduating from University of Wisconsin with a degree in psychology, Kimes floundered around about what to do with her life. Out of default, as she says, she went to law school. In fact, aided by a phenomenal LSAT score, she got into and attended Columbia. Because her decision had been made in haste, however, when she went, she didn't know what torts or commercial outlines or hornbooks or Law Review or Moot Court were. Ivy Briefs describes how she learned these lessons and went on to a successful career at Lavish Law Firm in NYC.
This is a must-read for anyone contemplating law school.

Criminal Law, 5th (Hornbook Series Student Edition) ReviewFirst of all, this book is aesthetically beautiful which is what made me look at it in the first place. But way more importantly, it is excellent for covering everything you need to know for a criminal law course. A lot of students are drawn away from this book and other hornbooks because they are almost the same size as a casebook. Even though its longer and bigger than a glannons or E+E, it covers every subject you will go over in your 1L crim law class. It also gives you the big picture about the revolution of a law, the policy reasons behind it, elements of a rule, factors the court look at, etc. If you have any question about something in class, this book will probably have an answer for you. Another thing that is very useful is that the book does a good job at distinguishing the common law vs. MPC and statutory differences for rules. Since criminal law is such a statutory based subject, sometimes it is difficult to know what rule to use or how to find the majority or minority views, but this book will let you know all of it. I highly recommend it especially if you are interested in going into criminal law or want to know more about it.Criminal Law, 5th (Hornbook Series Student Edition) OverviewMajor emphasis is placed on the basic premises of criminal law, including its sources and general limitations. This Hornbook provides detailed discussion on the topics of responsibility, justification and excuse, inchoate crimes and accomplice, and liability. Attention is also given to subjects such as causation, insanity, and conspiracy.

Storming the Court: How a Band of Yale Law Students Sued the President--and Won ReviewI am a 3L about to graduate from law school and this book makes me want to shake off law firm salaries for the sake of making a change in this world. In less grandious terms, it makes me proud to be a future lawyer.
I saw Brandt Goldstein speak just before reading the book and he mentioned that he wrote the book to read like a legal thriller. I was not disappointed in this respect. He parallels the plight of the Haitians with the efforts of the law students. Politics, Legal Procedure, Trial strategy, and diplomacy are all addressed in an entertaining narrative. The cover gives away the ending but the value of this book lies in the way the author pulls the reader into full identification with amatuer lawyers. Although it is a must read for all lawyers, anyone would find enjoyment from this short read.Storming the Court: How a Band of Yale Law Students Sued the President--and Won Overview
