Succeeding in Graduate School: The Career Guide for Psychology Students ReviewAn outstanding and very well written source of information for the prospective as well as current graduate psychology student, this guide provides crucial information on all aspects of a career in psychology from choosing the appropriate degree to mastering a career in one's chosen area of expertise. I especially appreciated the chapters on the development of traditional psychological skills including teaching, psychological testing and assessment, psychotherapy, and consultation, as well as how to get and how to survive an internship. Having been in graduate school myself for over 6 years I also found the chapter on mastering stress quite useful. Information is also provided for students in special circumstances such as minorities, international students, and student couples.
The guide concludes with the prudent advice to keep an open mind and keep your eyes open concerning the many ways in which a degree in psychology can be put to good use depending on opportunities available, as well as the changing needs of society. I would like to conclude by saying I wish I had this book available to me as an undergraduate psychology student, and would like to offer my sincere thanks to Dr. Walfish and to my distinguished former professor Dr. Hess, for making this extremely useful and interesting text available. I will continue to tell as many fellow psychology students I can about this guide.Succeeding in Graduate School: The Career Guide for Psychology Students OverviewPsychology students who want to continue their education today are confronted by a bewildering variety of possibilities. Succeeding in Graduate School offers them much needed practical help. Written by experienced mentors, this book: *explains the options provided by a bachelor's degree, describes what each of the many available programs at the master's and doctoral levels prepares one to do, helps in selecting the most appropriate program, and enhances one's chances of being admitted; *gives reader-friendly tutorials in teaching, research, and clinical/consulting skills; *describes the stresses of life as a graduate student; *suggests ways to cope with the management of difficult professors, the search for the optimal advisor-mentor match, and other political and emotional problems that can make or break a graduate career; *offers advice on overcoming obstacles to completing a thesis or dissertation; and *provides guidance on navigating beyond graduate school: maintaining one's ethical focus, getting into and completing the internship that is a requirement of many programs, obtaining a license for those requiring one to work, and in general, building a career beyond the degree. Clear, crisp, and comprehensive--with extensive references for further exploration--Succeeding in Graduate School is must reading for undergraduates and graduate students alike.

Life at the Texas State Lunatic Asylum, 1857-1997 (Centennial Series of the Association of Former Students, Texas A&M University) ReviewI first read this book when I was working at Austin State Hospital. Sarah Sitton does an exemplary job of explaining the politics behind the founding of the original "Texas State Lunatic Asylum" through the current incarnation of the institution as the "Austin State Hospital."
The book serves not only as a history of one institution, but as a chronicle of changing attitudes and beliefs around the issue of mental illness. She documents the forward-thinking attitude of the original founders as they envisioned a "home away from home" for people who were having difficulties facing life; as well as, the decline into a warehouse for people who didn't "fit in."
Sarah Sitton brings the stories of the patients alive with accounts of their histories, as well as those of the reformers who fought for the right to treatment during the sixties. Texas heroes stand out in the book; most notably, Mrs. M.E. Holdsworth Butts, who sent prison-style dishes (used in the asylum) to members of the Texas State Legislature to urge more humane treatment of "inmates."
To this day Texas and every state in the union (perhaps, every place in the world) continues to stigmatize people with severe symptoms of mental illness. This book is not only the chronicle of one asylum, it is the story of mental healthcare and how it is subject to the winds of political whim.

Psychiatry for Medical Students, Third Edition ReviewThis is a great review book for the most commonly found conditions in psychiatry as well as covering geriatric AND pediatric issues. It has the DSM-IV criteria for these conditions, a great section on differentials (which comes in SUPER handy at test time).
Took off 1 star as a few items (mainly treatment related) are outdated or not present as it is from 1997.Psychiatry for Medical Students, Third Edition OverviewFor medical students taking their first course in psychiatry or entering their first clinical clerkship, their early encounters with psychiatric patients and their need to master vast amounts of new information on complicated illnesses can be a bewildering, grueling, and intimidating experience. Fortunately, these newcomers have a reliable and trusted source that makes psychiatry more accessible to them. Widely used in medical schools and allied mental health curricula, the third edition of Psychiatry for Medical Students is the standard against which all psychiatric texts for beginning medical students are measured. This popular book gives medical students, primary care physicians, nurses, social workers, and psychologists a jargon-free introduction to the basics, including topics such as schizophrenia, electroconvulsive therapy, transference, and tranquilizers. The text also helps the reader develop the basic skills needed to carry out a diagnostic evaluation and provides systematic coverage of common psychiatric disorders, groups of patients, specialized psychiatric fields, special problems encountered among patients with a broad range of psychiatric conditions, and psychotherapies and somatic therapies. This updated edition incorporates the changes in DSM-IV and contains discussions of recent developments throughout the field. Filled with new references and the latest research, this book can be used as a quick reference during clinical work and a starting point for further reading.
