Reworking the Student Departure Puzzle ReviewAlthough this book is starting to be a little dated for current presentation of attrition theory and research (older than 5 years) it still has some very useful information. I purchased it for the chapter by Bean and Eaton on the Psychological Model of Student Retention. I could not find this information anywhere else and it was essential to a thorough review of the history of attrition models in the field of higher education retention. For a nursing educator, this information is important to the exploration of theory related to nursing student attrition where theory such as self-efficacy, coping, and attributional theory is essential to further study. Subject matter such as power, identity, and culture are also discussed which makes for interesting reading.Reworking the Student Departure Puzzle OverviewMore than a quarter of the students who enter four-year institutions and half of those who enter two-year schools depart at the end of their first year. This phenomenon is known as the "departure puzzle," and for years, the most important body of work on student retention has come from sociologist Vincent Tinto.
