Pattern Design - A Book For Students Treating In A Practical Way Of The Anatomy, Planning And Evolution Of Repeated Ornament ReviewThe first edition of this book was published in 1903. This would seem to place it as a popular work for the ornamental design of the previous decade (Victorian, etc). The second edition of 1933 was made over by an author named Amor Fenn who rearranged some chapters and added more about borders. The basic concepts of pattern design (i.e. wallpaper, rugs, etc.) are explained in that endearing early 20th century patter that turned everything around so they could say 5 words in 20; pre-entertainment-overload days! I took these drafting examples right into Photoshop and Illustrator and created several rough MacIntosh like Victorian wallpapers in a short time... copy/paste, flip, and snap-to made this an easy trial. Taking the same trials and thinking 100 years into the future made web background pattern construction a breeze. Cool. ...and everything in between, this could get fun. An excellent reference shelf itemPattern Design - A Book For Students Treating In A Practical Way Of The Anatomy, Planning And Evolution Of Repeated Ornament OverviewPATTERN DESIGN by LEWIS F. DAY Originally published in 1933. PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION: THE exhaustion of a further edition of Pattern Design and the steady demand for the work are an indication of its continuing practical value as a textbook, but it seemed advisable that it should be thoroughly revised and brought up to date and it was decided to entrust the work to Mr Amor Fenn, who, as a personal friend of Lewis F. Day, was conversant with his work and in sympathy with his aims and methods. Consequently, the book for the first time since its appearance has received a thorough overhaul the order of the chapters has been rearranged, and that on Borders a subject Mr Fenn has made particularly his own has been transformed and re-illustrated. A number of illustrations have been redrawn or replaced, and others added, including two coloured plates, while the Editor has contributed a chapter summarising the course of the design of pattern during the past eighty years down to the present

Computational Algebraic Geometry (London Mathematical Society Student Texts) ReviewI will not say this book is an introduction but that its a confusion remover for a serious student of algebraic geometry. This book I consider a part of the much needed revolution happening in algebraic geometry which means that if you browse or spend time reading a book you must learn something. Excellent coverage of a fascinating subject. Enjoy!Computational Algebraic Geometry (London Mathematical Society Student Texts) OverviewRecent advances in computing and algorithms make it easier to do many classical problems in algebra. Suitable for graduate students, this book brings advanced algebra to life with many examples. The first three chapters provide an introduction to commutative algebra and connections to geometry. The remainder of the book focuses on three active areas of contemporary algebra: homological algebra; algebraic combinatorics and algebraic topology; and algebraic geometry.

Wood Technology and Processes, Student Edition ReviewI'm an industrial technology teacher and have been looking for a book for my woodworking class that was not only informative but also "fun" to read. This book explains everything you need to know to begin woodworking. I also learned lots of small tidbits that I haven't read from any other book. The author has been writing wood technology books for at least as long as I've been teaching but this is by far his best effort. I'm not sure how it worked but he combined his experience with the people from wood magazine and the result is a very visual book. Lots of good illustrations to make key points. It has seperate cahpters for each wood joint and well as the "key" components for constructing them. (The best descriptions I've seen)In conclusion, it's the best "1" book I've seen about woodworking and it's processes. If you have any questions feel free to email me.Wood Technology and Processes, Student Edition OverviewWood Technology & Processes is a comprehensive woodworking text for high school that introduces basic and advanced woodworking operations with clear instructions and illustrations.Besides the "Woodworker's Handbook," and a four-color presentation of the tools and materials of the woodworker, this edition has a-new section on "Advanced Woodworking Techniques," including clamping techniques, router table techniques, face framing, use of the miniature lathe, and step-by-step instructions on how to make various kinds of joints.New projects with detailed step-by-step procedures have been added to the Better Homes and Gardens® WOOD® Magazine Projects at the back of the book.

Survey of Historic Costume 5th edition + Free Student Study Guide ReviewI am a living historian doing a senior thesis on women's clothing of the 18th century. The good thing about this book is that it covers a lot of time periods and places, though it only gives the briefest descriptions. The photos are decent but the illustrations are not good. The text itself is far less than desirable; I have found multiple spelling and grammatical mistakes (page 307 says that the Directoire and Empire periods spanned the years from the French Revolution until around 1920, which I would like to assume is a typo) as well as some incorrect historical 'facts'. The writing style is misleading and vague at times. I will not use this book for research because I have developed a distrust for the information it presents as facts. I would not have bought this book for my own reading and research. If you are pursuing a career in history, fashion or historical fashion, do not rely on this book. If you're not, it might be a nice read.Survey of Historic Costume 5th edition + Free Student Study Guide OverviewSurvey of Historic Costume, 5th Edition, presents a thorough overview of Western dress from the ancient world to the trends of today.
