Counseling and Mental Health Services on Campus: A Handbook of Contemporary Practices and Challenges (Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education Series) ReviewThis book covers traditional programming for campus counseling & mental health services practices and points the way to needed innovative program development. The authors strongly emphasize thoughtful program development that is student development focused. This should be required reading for all considering a career in campus counseling & for those doing contemporary programming in this vital area, including administrators. Clyde A. Crego, PhDCounseling and Mental Health Services on Campus: A Handbook of Contemporary Practices and Challenges (Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education Series) OverviewThis timely guide addresses the daunting challenge of meeting the increasing demand for mental health counseling services with limited resources. An invaluable resource for counselors and administrators presenting the most current practices, models, and approaches for addressing the mental health needs of today's university students. In straightforward and clear language, James Archer Jr. and Stewart Cooper demonstrate how to organize, implement, and manage effective counseling, prevention, and development services on four year college campuses. Counseling and Mental Health Services on Campus explains how the efficient and effective models of brief therapy and group counseling are especially well-suited to the college environment and demonstrates how university programs can expand counseling services through the creative use of paraprofessionals, faculty, and staff, professional volunteers, and part-time staff. Archer and Cooper offer practical counseling approaches that will meet the needs of students with specific problems, such as substance abuse and eating disorders, as well as students with developmental concerns. The authors also suggest useful techniques and strategies for working with a variety of populations such as women, minority groups, gay, lesbian, and bisexual students, and adult learners. An innovative new approach is described which the authors call the initiator-catalyst approach and the book's illustrative examples demonstrate the application and effectiveness of this important new model.

When Hope and Fear Collide: A Portrait of Today's College Student ReviewWhen Hope & Fear Collide is a book every person in student affairs should read. This book explores the reasoning behind today's struggling college student. It explains why students perceive college as necessary not merely for learning, but for obtaining a better job and a better life. Learning is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. This book also gives a history of the events these students were exposed to during their lives and the role these events play in shaping their attitudes towards college and life. Students today view universities as businesses. They expect royal customer service and won't settle for anything less. They will take their money elsewhere. Students spend more time working jobs or with relationships than they do on college studies. When asked how they feel, students usually respond with the word "tired". When asked what they do for fun they respond, "study". Many students have become recluses with their jampacked rooms full of everything from VCR's to coffee machines. They don't need to go out for anything. Even classes are held on-line, so forget going to class. Students today are more likely to fear not being able to succeed than their peers a decade ago. They ask, "Will we have it better than our parents?" This fear is juxtaposed to their great hope to try and achieve. This generation is very service oriented and believe they can make a difference in their own backyard and thus, affect the world. Again, if you are in student affairs, administration or residential life, this book will be beneficial. When Hope and Fear Collide: A Portrait of Today's College Student OverviewThe clock becomes your enemy when reading this book. The revelations propel you along causing you to read faster and faster to the next line, paragraph, page, and chapter. Must reading for anyone concerned about higher education and the future. This will be the most often quoted research and literature on student demographics for all higher education during the next decade!--GwAndolyn Jordan Dungy, executive director, NASPAIn his 1980 book When Dreams and Heroes Died, Arthur Levine presented a portrait of a generation of college students without heroes?a generation that turned inward, away from activism and community and toward individual and material gain. But when Levine returned to campuses in the 1990s, he discovered a startling and encouraging shift in the attitudes of the new generation of students. When Hope and Fear Collide examines a generation motivated by a conflicting sense of hope and fear. While today's students fear a great many things both on a global and local level they are less pessimistic than the previous generation, as they look for ways to make a difference in their world. Campus faculty, administrators, and student services professionals are in a pivotal position?able to nurture students' hopes and help them confront and overcome their fears. Levine and Cureton give them the information they need to make a difference.Contents:Generation Without a NameFlaws, Problems, and Decline: The New LocalismCampus Politics: Let the Buyer Beware!Multiculturalism: The Campus DividedPersonal Life: Retreat from IntimacyAcademics: Search for an Insurance PolicyThe Future: Doing Well of Doing GoodConclusion: A Transitional GenerationArthur Levine is president and professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Many of the chapters in this handbook are filled with 'ah hahs,' quiet smiles, and those private revelations that people have when reading an insightful statement they wish they themselves had made.... As is true for most of the Jossey-Bass professional handbooks, each chapter stands alone and offers varying degrees of information and usefulness."

The book covers a wide range of topics that would be appropriate for the beginning administrator as well as the seasoned veteran. The essays provide information on the practical day-to-day activities of higher education administration as well as the more abstract concepts of strategic decision-making and the political realities that surround university life. The book is recommAnded; it has such a broad brush approach that it is practical for an introductory course in higher education as well as a solid reference for the practicing administrator."
