Apologetics Study Bible For Students ReviewI purchased the HCSB Aplogetics Study Bible for Students primarily because of the text (the 2nd edition of the Holman Christan Standard Bible translation). The HCSB is a fairly literal translation that is written in natural English. The NIV is translated in approximately the same manner as the HCSB, but the HCSB is more literal and includes many more tranlsation notes (adding a level of insight and transparency that the NIV lacks). The HCSB combines accuracy and readability better than any other translation, in my opinion. The 1st edition of the HCSB was my translation of choice for general study and the 2nd edition is an improvement over the 1st.
The study features of the Bible are very good. The articles, quotes, "Twisted Scripture" notes and study notes all serve to strengthen the reader's faith and provide a solid footing for the accuracy and reliability of God's Word. The only criticisms I have of this fine Bible are: 1) The font size of the study notes is a bit small 2) The Bible lacks a concordance (a necessity in a study Bible). Doctrine of God (Students Reformed Theological Library) ReviewBavinck's Doctrine of God is richly informative, very detailed, and difficult to read. I give it 4 stars because Bavinck is both thorough in his handling of the material, well-organized (the material is laid out within an outline format) and of course thoroughly scriptural.
As negatives go, Bavinck often quotes writers and theologians who are obscure today, as if the reader had a good, workable knowledge of their material. This can often leave the reader bewildered as to the argument the quoted writer was making, with no opportunity to read the original materials.
Bavinck breaks down the Doctrine of God into 7 categories: God's Incomprehensibility, God's Knowability, God's Names, God's Incommunicable Attributes, God's Communicable Attributes, The Holy Trinity, and God's Counsel. Each of these of course is further subdivided in a logical format. Note that in the Dutch original, God's Names came after God's Incommunicable Attributes, and the editor does not give any rational for the change.
The last chapter on God's Counsel is the real gem of this work, and Bavinck's treatment of election is a gripping read, demonstrating God's love and forethought of His creatures. His treatment of the supra/infra-lapsarian debate should also be consulted by any who wish to avoid these errors.
The hardback itself is of good quality and mine has held up well over its first reading, although it is rather unremarkable (in fact it looks almost identical to Berkhof's Systematic Theology also published by Banner of Truth).

Case for Christ--Student Edition, The ReviewMuch condensced from the original The Case for Christ, this book gets five stars because it is simple enough for the average junior/senior higher to understand his faith. One of my students says this is the best book that he ever read and was genuinely appreciative that the book was aimed at his level of understanding. The former skeptic Strobel asks some of the tough questions that many skeptics pose to Christians every day. Many Christians have been scared from sharing their faith because they don't have all the answers, and that's a shame.
The nice thing about this book is that Strobel asks prominent Christian scholars about the authenticity of Christ, His nature, and the veracity of the resurrection. Strobel interviews such greats as Bruce Metzger, Edwin Yamauchi, Gary Collins, D.A. Carson, William Lane Craig, Gary Habermas, and J.P. Moreland. While the aforementioned scholars have all written plenty on their own, many of their tomes are unreadable by the average Christian layperson. But in the student edition of The Case for Christ, the writing is not too theological or difficult to understand. I believe anyone with doubts about Jesus Christ will view Him differently after reading this book. The Christian layperson will also benefit by learning answers to support her beliefs (1 Pet. 3:15-16).
