beginning bible students.This book could easily be used with children in 5th-6th grade through Adults. There are lots of pictures,maps and charts. Some Hebrew terms are identified and defined as well. I was especially pleased with the up to date information on the word YHWH and its transliteration Jehovah.
There are also still photos of modern day Israel, its people and
various items both from today and antiquity. The price is reasonable enough that continue to buy these from time to time and give them to new students as they join the class. Student's Life Application Bible NLT ReviewMany people think that the NLT version is "bad" because it is not the Bible. It is, just not the NKJ version. I have always had a hard time understanding The Word, and this version was wonderful for me.
I got it just yesterday, and haven't read much of it, but I love the format and all the notes. I wold have given it 5 stars, but since I have had it for only a very short time, I don't know if I won't like it as much later.
I have read, and also used the devotions in The New Believer's Bible. People are dissing that one, too! I think for new believers, children, and teens, the NLT is an easy-to-read bible. If I tried reading the KJV as a new believer, child, or teen I'd freak out. The thee's, thou's, thy's, etc., and the other words that are beginning to be less used, and even less "understandable", would make it hard for me to concentrate on God's love letter to me. I would be too focused on trying to understand the language! Even the NIV is sometimes too hard for me to understand!
This is a wonderful version for all those teens out there who want to read the Bible, but can't find the time. If you have a good Bible and are thirsty enough for God's Word, all of a sudden, there will be time! NIV Student Bible ReviewI have about 4 or 5 different versions of the Bible, including the more academic Oxford Annotated. I like this one because it is so easy to read. It is not the most erudite or the most beautiful but it certainly is simple and to the point. I take it classes with me and use the commentary (often!) to explain and clarify passages. HarperCollins Study Bible - Student Edition: Fully Revised & Updated ReviewFor years this text has been a staple of many a classrooms. This text and the notes themselves are superb. Hands down this was for many years a spectacular production. However all this is ruined by HarperCollins recent production of this text with shoddy design and materials.
The version listed here has been significantly changed. The layout is cramped at best. The margins are minuscule leaving little to no room for personal comments or notes within the text. Which seems kind of ridiculous for a student bible not having room for the student to make notes in. They have additionally changed the font in this text making it even more difficult to read. It is to narrow now and plays havoc on the eyes.
The maps are horrible! Instead of drawn maps they have been rendered by digital maps that have been pixelated horribly! I am all for digital maps but don't do it in such away that when you look at it everything is blurry and you can't see anything. The maps as they are just seem to take up space. This could have been good had they taken sometime and made good maps. But no we are stuck with horrible maps.
And the space between the columns have been significantly reduced. To the point it is easy to miss the ending of one and continue reading into the other.
The text itself and notes are absolutely wonderful. The quality and production of this text is horrific. Doctrine of God (Students Reformed Theological Library) ReviewBavinck's Doctrine of God is richly informative, very detailed, and difficult to read. I give it 4 stars because Bavinck is both thorough in his handling of the material, well-organized (the material is laid out within an outline format) and of course thoroughly scriptural.
As negatives go, Bavinck often quotes writers and theologians who are obscure today, as if the reader had a good, workable knowledge of their material. This can often leave the reader bewildered as to the argument the quoted writer was making, with no opportunity to read the original materials.
Bavinck breaks down the Doctrine of God into 7 categories: God's Incomprehensibility, God's Knowability, God's Names, God's Incommunicable Attributes, God's Communicable Attributes, The Holy Trinity, and God's Counsel. Each of these of course is further subdivided in a logical format. Note that in the Dutch original, God's Names came after God's Incommunicable Attributes, and the editor does not give any rational for the change.
The last chapter on God's Counsel is the real gem of this work, and Bavinck's treatment of election is a gripping read, demonstrating God's love and forethought of His creatures. His treatment of the supra/infra-lapsarian debate should also be consulted by any who wish to avoid these errors.
The hardback itself is of good quality and mine has held up well over its first reading, although it is rather unremarkable (in fact it looks almost identical to Berkhof's Systematic Theology also published by Banner of Truth).

The 15th edition of Synopsis Quattuor Evangeliorum, published in 1996, not only contains an up-to-date edition of the Greek New Testament (based on the 26th ed. of Nestle-Aland) but includes as an appendix the complete text of the Gospel of Thomas (in Coptic, paralleled with English and German translations) as well as retroverted translations into Greek (supplemented with extant Greek fragments) supplied in the footnotes. As with earlier editions, the parallels are given according to the order in each of the four Gospels (resulting in some duplication), an apparatus supplies the important variants found among the Greek manuscripts, and references to relevant Biblical parallels are provided. ESV Student Study Bible ReviewI received a notification from Crossway Books last week that they had just released their latest ESV Bible and that it was Students Study Bible version. I immediately ordered one since I work with some college students and young adults just starting their careers (I use to be the Youth Pastor at our church).
I am very pleased with this new version of the ESV Study Bible. In addition to the regular study notes and topics that are included, along with the Outlines and Introductions to each book of the Bible there are several new features. In the Student Study Bible they have included 120 new Bible character profiles. These profiles are short (just a few paragraphs each) but they are well done and help the student get a thumbnail sketch of important characters of the Bible.
There are also 900 New 'Did You Know" facts that are listed throughout the Bible. An example from page 34 is the "Did you Know" fact about "Cherubim (Genesis 3:24) are angels who guard holy places. They appear in various places in the Bible. 'Cherubim' is the Hebrew plural form of 'cherub'." These little facts help a student to come to an understand about a term that they might not be familiar with if they are new to Bible reading.
Also included in the Bible are the plan of salvation and many topics that will help a new Christian navigate their way to a better understanding of the Bible. The color maps are well done and give just the right information when needed to go along with stories that the student is reading.
Then there are the regular notes (commentary) at the bottom of each page that give the students information regarding the text that they are reading. There is also a great concordance in the back that is well done and will help students to search out topics that they are interested in.
Finally, all of this in the Bible you purchase your student plus an authentication code that will allow them to register with ESV.org so that they will have full access to the ESV Study Bible online as well as the printed edition they have. Today's students are so computer oriented that you will find that many of the students will become so adept at using the online Bible that they won't have to carry their study Bible with them, instead they can sit down in an internet cafe or at a library and sign on and start reading and studying anywhere.
I think that Crossway Books has done a great job in putting this Bible together and just when you thought, how can they improve on the ESV Study Bible, well they do it with the Student Version. So, thank you Crossway for developing this new study tool for students.
