Closing Of The American Mind - How Higher Education Has Failed Democracy And Impoverished The Souls Of Today's Students ReviewWhen The Closing of The American Mind was published in 1987, it instantly ignited a firestorm of praise and condemnation. Conservatives hailed it as vindication of their long-ignored criticisms about American culture in general and higher education in particular. Liberals denounced it as elitist and intolerant, and they said Bloom wanted to keep students ignorant of other cultures so he could indoctrinate them with his. Neither side had it right. The Closing of The American Mind is, as Bloom put it in his preface, "a meditation on the state of our souls."
Both sides were wrong about the book because they didn't read it carefully enough. Liberals read Bloom's argument for philosophy as an attempt to purge non-white, non-European writers from the cannon on grounds of cultural purity. Conservatives read his plea as an attempt to run all the liberal professors out of academia and replace them with conservatives. But a careful reading of Bloom would quickly prove both of these interpretations false.
Bloom believed Plato's cave was culture, whether that culture was western or not (after all, it was Plato's description of his own culture that created the idea of the cave). Bloom's argument was that students should be forced to read the works of the great philosophers because those writers are the only ones who dealt with the fundamental question of life: what is man. Bloom believed it was the university's mission to equip students with the tools that would enable them to seek the answer to this question and to lead a philosophical life. Only the great philosophers were capable of introducing students to the deepest and most profound life, and without this introduction, students would forever remain in their respective caves.
Bloom never was a conservative, nor was he one who wished to impose his "culture" on others. Simply put, he was a scholar who wished to make his students think - to truly think - about the nature of their existence and of society. The goal of Bloom's book was to show how Americans of all political persuasions, social backgrounds and economic conditions are debating within a narrow modern world-view and have simply accepted as fact a mushy blend of modern theory that repeatedly contradicts itself and stands in sharp contrast to an almost entirely forgotten world of opposing thought: that of the ancients.
In other words, Americans are incapable of true self-examination and self-understanding because they are ignorant of ancient philosophy, which poses the only alternative to the modern concept of man. What Bloom does with The Closing of The American Mind is expose the great Oz by asking him life's deepest questions. Bloom asks the same questions of today's professors and students that the ancient philosophers asked of themselves and their students. He finds that not only does no one have an answer, but no one even understands the questions.
Bloom's confrontation exposes the modern American university for what it really is: one big self-esteem seminar where students are taught self-validation instead of self-examination. Professors are not forcing students to confront the most serious questions of life, but rather are handing them scrolls of paper certifying that the university has bestowed on them qualities which, in fact, they already possessed, those being "openness" and "tolerance."
Of students, Bloom writes, "The relativity of truth is not a theoretical insight but a moral postulate, the condition of a free society, or so they see it. They have all been equipped with this framework early on, and it is the modern replacement for the inalienable and natural rights that used to be the traditional grounds for a free society."
The university, he shows, does nothing to contest this belief, but feeds it instead. The end result is that there can be no more truth or goodness and no need or even ability to make tough choices. Where the purpose of higher education once was to enable the student to find truth, the modern university teaches that there is no truth, only "lifestyle."
There exist in the world polar opposites. Bloom lists "reason-revelation, freedom-necessity, democracy-aristocracy, good-evil, body-soul, self-other, city-man, eternity-time, being-nothing." Serious thought requires recognition of the existence of these opposites and the choice of one over the other. "A serious life means being fully aware of the alternatives, thinking about them with all the intensity one brings to bear on life-and-death questions, in full recognition that every choice is a great risk with necessary consequences that are hard to bear," Bloom says.
He argues persuasively that the modern university does not force students to confront these alternatives at all, much less seriously think about them. Therefore, the modern university fails in its purpose, which is to create students aware of the vast array of possibilities that life offers and capable of choosing the good life.
Bloom has been harshly, and is still continually, accused of trying to force his own ideology on his students. But even a cursory reading of The Closing of The American Mind will disprove this silly accusation. Bloom simply wanted to make students think, to make them understand that there are different ideas of what man is and that they must confront these ideas if they wish to lead a meaningful life. This, he believed, was the university's purpose because it is there and only there that students would be exposed to alternatives to the prevailing intellectual trends. Life will happen to the students, he said, they don't need the university to provide it for them. They need the university to equip them for making the choices that will lead them to the best, most fulfilling life - the philosophical life. It is precisely for this reason that universities exist, and it is precisely this task that they now fail to accomplish.
Bloom's book remains important a decade after its publication because of the depth of Bloom's intellect and the thoroughness of his analysis. Only the last third of The Closing of The American Mind focuses on the modern university. Bloom spends the first two-thirds of the book explaining the modern mind-set and contrasting it with the ancient and the enlightened. He demonstrates the shallowness of the modern mind by repeatedly beating it about the head with Aristotle, Plato, Rousseau, Tocqueville, Hobbes, Locke, Nietzsche, Kant, Hegel and Heidegger. With this tactic, Bloom tears apart the vapid pop psychology that passes as deep thought and holds up the shreds for the reader to see their thinness.
But Bloom's attack is also instruction. Through it he takes the reader on an intellectual history tour in which he tracks the evolution of modern thought. Focusing on key words in today's usage, such as "lifestyle," "relationship" and "commitment," he retraces them through history to discover their origins and their true meanings. He then contrasts these words with the ones they replaced, such as "duty," "honor," "love." The depth and complexity of the ancient concepts overpowers the shallow convenience of the modern ones. Bloom tells how, when he showed this contrast to his students, they didn't care. Worse, they recoiled at the very thought of being bound by duty or honor or love as opposed to being committed to relationships via contract.
This contrast is at the heart of Bloom's book: whether humans are truth-seeking creatures who live for the purpose of pleasing God and discovering the good, or whether they are truth-creating creatures who live only for the purpose of satisfying their animal needs and preventing the bad. Bloom believes the former, modernity the latter. Bloom knew that his book would not solve the question or ennoble America. But it would reintroduce the question, which is all that he wanted the university to do. It is tragic that, as he predicted, the universities would cast him out as a heretic instead of making themselves his disciples.Closing Of The American Mind - How Higher Education Has Failed Democracy And Impoverished The Souls Of Today's Students Overview

Student's Life Application Bible NLT ReviewMany people think that the NLT version is "bad" because it is not the Bible. It is, just not the NKJ version. I have always had a hard time understanding The Word, and this version was wonderful for me.
I got it just yesterday, and haven't read much of it, but I love the format and all the notes. I wold have given it 5 stars, but since I have had it for only a very short time, I don't know if I won't like it as much later.
I have read, and also used the devotions in The New Believer's Bible. People are dissing that one, too! I think for new believers, children, and teens, the NLT is an easy-to-read bible. If I tried reading the KJV as a new believer, child, or teen I'd freak out. The thee's, thou's, thy's, etc., and the other words that are beginning to be less used, and even less "understandable", would make it hard for me to concentrate on God's love letter to me. I would be too focused on trying to understand the language! Even the NIV is sometimes too hard for me to understand!
This is a wonderful version for all those teens out there who want to read the Bible, but can't find the time. If you have a good Bible and are thirsty enough for God's Word, all of a sudden, there will be time! There was time all along, you know, you just didn't WANT to!Student's Life Application Bible NLT OverviewParents, youth leaders, pastors, and teens across the country love the Student's Life Application Bible because it contains the best notes and features available for applying God's Word to everyday situations! Now the popular features from this best-selling teen study Bible are being combined with the dynamic and easy-to-understand text of the New Living Translation to create the ulitmate teen study Bible! Teens can experience the best application-oriented notes and features in one comprehensive Bible edition they can easily understand and enjoy. Student's Life Application Bible: New Living Translation, hardcover ReviewI was super hesitant to get this Bible. I saw the aqua one at borders for $26.xx and came to look on amazon and it was 20 bucks. Still i was hesitant cuz i lean more towards word for word translations like the esv and niv compared to dynamic equivalence translations like the NIV.
However, i'd spent a good amount of time going through the aqua colored edition that i realized this Bible would be great for me. So i decided to get it as my third Bible and use it for the purpose of the learning tools in it.
Good thing is that i found this blue one, there's an orange one too but they are the same as the $20.xx aqua one. Different print dates but both second editions. I even went to the NIV website to look at the pdf chapter ones of each one just to make sure they were the same and it were so i bought it.
I did get here and i'm glad i got this $15 one cuz it's the same as the aqua colored one, the only difference is the price. I mean it's the same thing on the same pages the only difference is the color of the bibles.
I like it, i've been reading it everyday and the dynamic equivalence is not soo different, at least the genesis isn't although when you get to proverbs, you see huge differences that completely change the meaning of the verse so for that, get an esv.
I'm a college student and some of the things i've read soo far does apply to me. I find it to be a great study bible. I spent weeks sitting at borders every afternoon comparing different study bibles. I mean reading differnt chapters and whatever.
If you are crazy about color and are willing to pay $5 extra bucks at amazon or 11 extra borders, get the aqua colored one but just know the extra money you are paying is for the cover of the book. Same things at the exact places in each page but just different color. They're both second editions. Amazon doesn't list it well, this one is also a life application study bible like the aqua one.
Otherwise, buy this one cuz you are going to be glad you did and for the price, it's soo worth it even if you don't like the NIV translation.
Oh, MY five star rating is solely for how good this bible is as a student study bible. It is NOT my rating for the NLT translation.
Addendum: This study does a good job helping me see different angles of chapters i've read 10x or more in my life. I try to read everyday but you know life is for college students. I'm almost done with school and this has been one of the best things i've had living in a crazy city and going attending a big university. If you don't mind the translation, i think it'll be a good gift for a college freshman or high school student who desires a better walk with God. I actually read it alongside the ESV because i've different bible translations and i like to compare certain verses.Student's Life Application Bible: New Living Translation, hardcover OverviewTotally revised and updated, the Student's Life Application Bible is a Bible designed for teens who desire to deepen their relationship with God. The notes have been updated to ensure the content, language, and look resonate with today's teenagers. The cover and sales price will grab the attention of teen customers. All notes and features are written by youth experts.

NIV Student Bible ReviewThis bible is a good place for anyone in the world to start learning about the christian religeon.
For christians, its absolutely an excellent resource. Aside from being an easy to read New International Version of the bible, it includes advice on how to deal with day to day events, excellent interpretations of certain passages, and helpful ways of getting you through reading the entire bible, or even certain books of it, without feeling bogged down.
For non-christians, who are simply interested in learning more about christianity, or maybe just the old testament (the history of Judaism, and the beginning of christianity, through prophets), this bible gives you excellent background information. The bible also features maps of the different settings in the bible (excellent for anyone), timelines of the prophets (excellent for anyone as well...), and an index that allows you to look up a certain topic quickly!
Before purchasing this bible, I had little interest in reading the bible atall. I would recommend this version to anyone in need of a little "drive" to get going!NIV Student Bible Overview- For young adults seeking a Bible that deals with contemporary issues and helps them apply biblical truths to their lives- Addresses three common complaints about the Bible:I can't understand it (Highlights and Insights), I can't find it (Subject Guide), I get discouraged (3-Track Reading Plan) - 100 People You Should Know gives insight into the lives and faith of important biblical characters

Old Testament (Bible Students) ReviewIf you are looking for an unbelievably affordable and beautifully bound hardcover edition of the Hebrew Bible in its original Hebrew, look no further. The print is very readable. The binding is of great quality. It is also a nice portable size, unlike the bulky, oversize Stuttgart Bible. The only drawbacks to this edition are that it has no critical apparatus (only marginal notes on variant readings), and that it hasn't had a scholarly edit in several decades. Yet, all said, it is a durable, portable and reliable edition of the original Hebrew scripture for personal reference, and study. Instructors should also note that the price by far beats any other text published. Sincere thanks to the publisher!Old Testament (Bible Students) Overview

Soka Education: A Buddhist Vision for Teachers, Students & Parents ReviewDaisaku Ikeda is a prolific author who presents a Buddhist perspective on a vast array of topics. His message is that people have boundless creative potential for bringing about positive change. His works are always uplifting. Soka Education is no exception. It offers clear guidelines for educational reform. The focus is not on pedagogical strategies, but on fundamental issues such as the purpose of education, the qualities of great educators, causes and solutions of teen violence, and the need to foster global citizens. Where teachers, administrators, politicians, and parents apply the wisdom of this book, schools will become more humane places and young people will blossom.
The Japanese term "Soka" means creative, contributive living; Soka Education is education that empowers students, enabling them to lead happy, fulfilled lives. Ikeda objects to using schools to serve nationalistic or corporate ends. Japan did so throughout the past century, and is now suffering the consequences. To counter that trend, Ikeda has founded "Soka schools" in Japan (kindergarten through university) and elsewhere that are characterized by joyful, enthusiastic students; wise, affectionate teachers; and a prevailing belief that every student has a unique and important role to play in the world. I have visited many of those campuses; no experience has ever given me greater cause for optimism about the future.
The current thrust in the USA is to gear instruction toward raising standardized test scores. This is a step away from placing students' interests and needs first. In Soka Education, Ikeda calls for "a society that serves the essential needs of education." In contrast to this notion, American society, with politicians leading the fray, heaps blame and abuse on teachers. What's worse, the schools most in need of support-inner-city schools, for example-come under the harshest attacks. To counter the dark, conservative mood that holds sway in the USA and other countries, hopeful, practical prescriptions are needed. Soka Education provides these in abundance.
To take one example, Ikeda discusses the problem of juvenile delinquency. While the phenomenon results from an erosion of human bonds characteristic of our age, he says, educators can connect, life to life, with troubled youngsters and lead them on a path toward creative, rather than destructive, living:
"If these bonds are severed, the human spirit can only roam aimlessly in the pitch darkness of solitude. . . . It is the responsibility of adults to patiently restore the ability to communicate by listening to the voices of isolated children calling out for help from the darkness. There is a famous episode involving Socrates in which his influence on youth is described as being like an electric ray that stings those who touch it. He explains that he can electrify others because he is electrified himself. Similarly, teachers must constantly be creative if they are to evoke creativity in their students. This is an essential quality for educators. Most important is the teacher's attitude. Human interaction is the key" (pp. 74-75).
A sample of chapter titles: Reviving Education, Serving the Essential Needs of Education, Education Toward Global Citizenship, An Outspoken Advocate of Educational Reform, Humanity in Education, The Fight to Live a Creative Life.Soka Education: A Buddhist Vision for Teachers, Students & Parents OverviewFrom a Japanese word meaning "to create value," this book presents a fresh spiritual perspective to question the ultimate purpose of education. Mixing American pragmatism with Buddhist philosophy, the goal of Soka education is the lifelong happiness of the learner. Rather than offering practical classroom techniques, this book speaks to the emotional heart of both the teacher and student. With input from philosophers and activists from several cultures, it advances the conviction that the true purpose of education is to create a peaceful world and to develop the individual character of each student in order to achieve that goal.

Case for Christ--Student Edition, The ReviewMuch condensced from the original The Case for Christ, this book gets five stars because it is simple enough for the average junior/senior higher to understand his faith. One of my students says this is the best book that he ever read and was genuinely appreciative that the book was aimed at his level of understanding. The former skeptic Strobel asks some of the tough questions that many skeptics pose to Christians every day. Many Christians have been scared from sharing their faith because they don't have all the answers, and that's a shame.
The nice thing about this book is that Strobel asks prominent Christian scholars about the authenticity of Christ, His nature, and the veracity of the resurrection. Strobel interviews such greats as Bruce Metzger, Edwin Yamauchi, Gary Collins, D.A. Carson, William Lane Craig, Gary Habermas, and J.P. Moreland. While the aforementioned scholars have all written plenty on their own, many of their tomes are unreadable by the average Christian layperson. But in the student edition of The Case for Christ, the writing is not too theological or difficult to understand. I believe anyone with doubts about Jesus Christ will view Him differently after reading this book. The Christian layperson will also benefit by learning answers to support her beliefs (1 Pet. 3:15-16). For these reasons, I highly recommend this book.Case for Christ--Student Edition, The OverviewWho Was Jesus?A good man? A lunatic? God? There's little question that he actually lived. But miracles? Rising from the dead? Some of the stories you hear about him sound like just that--stories. A reasonable person would never believe them, let alone the claim that he's the only way to God!But a reasonable person would also make sure that he or she understood the facts before jumping to conclusions. That's why Lee Strobel--an award-winning legal journalist with a knack for asking tough questions--decided to investigate Jesus for himself. An atheist, Strobel felt certain his findings would bring Christianity's claims about Jesus tumbling down like a house of cards. He was in for the surprise of his life. Join him as he retraces his journey from skepticism to faith. You'll consult expert testimony as you sift through the truths that history, science, psychiatry, literature, and religion reveal. Like Strobel, you'll be amazed at the evidence--how much there is, how strong it is, and what it says. The facts are in. What will your verdict be in The Case for Christ?

NIV Student Bible ReviewThis is an excellent copy of the NIV version of the Bible, featuring three Tracks for reading the Bible, from an introduction to reading every word. In addition to the text, each chapter has a great introduction as well as high points and people you'll meet within that particular Book. I gave this to my son (who is 16) to see what he thought of it, and he said he really liked the layout. The questions and highlights were things that were relevant to him--not patronizing or judgmental. He also really liked the Table of Weights and Measures and the Glossary of People and Places at the end. I found the text size easy to read and the graphics were simplistic and not at all overpowering. I would definitely buy this Bible for my teenagers and any young adult.NIV Student Bible OverviewThis Bible's proven, common-sense approach to studying the Scriptures appeals to high school students and college readers.
