Calculus and Its Applications plus MyMathLab Student Starter Kit (9th Edition) ReviewI teach a high school Calculus class for kids who are capable/competent mathematicians, but not really interested in the AP level at an independent school. We like Marv Bittinger's books because they provide a nice balance of applications and connections without losing sight of the math. We continue to use this out-of-date book because it is more readable than most Calculus texts and strikes a nice balance between the rigor of the math and applications that help students to feel a connection to the ideas. The organization of the material is pretty good, although I often salt in the introduction of simple trigonometric functions throughout my instruction, rather than waiting until the end of the course, where it appears in the book. We have found that our students have a lot of fun with the problems about exponential growth and decay, particularly the application of the laws of cooling in solving murders. It seems a little odd to nearly finish differentiation before exploring logarithms and then have to go back and consider derivatives again, but I have gotten used to that. Overall, I like the depth at which this book seeks to travel and the problems and explanations.Calculus and Its Applications plus MyMathLab Student Starter Kit (9th Edition) OverviewThe Seventh Edition of Calculus and Its Applications builds on its reputation as one of the most student-oriented and clearly written Applied Calculus texts available. The optional use of technology has been significantly increased in the Seventh Edition. The content has been streamlined, applications and exercises have been updated, including new data sources where appropriate, and the presentation of topics has been modernized through the use of technology.--This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Physics for Scientists and Engineers, Chapters 1-39 (with Student Tools CD-ROM) ReviewFor my physics for physics majors series, my professor is using the Giancoli books. Within those books there are multiple problems that the book does not give you any clue how to solve. The sheer number of these problems eliminates the chance that they are there to help the physics student figure it out for themselves. I was having "fun" with one of the problems in the book, when one of my neighbors stated that he remembered doing a similar problem from his Serway book. He showed me his book, and sure enough, there was a detailed explanation of how to solve that type of problem, and how they derived their equations. The fact that they used no calculus to derive the equation when it was unneccesary in my opinion was a plus. Five stars to a book that can solve the problems in other books!Physics for Scientists and Engineers, Chapters 1-39 (with Student Tools CD-ROM) OverviewThis best-selling, calculus-based text is recognized for its carefully crafted, logical presentation of the basic concepts and principles of physics. Raymond Serway, Robert Beichner, and contributing author John W. Jewett present a strong problem-solving approach that is further enhanced through increased realism in worked examples. Problem-solving strategies and hints allow students to develop a systematic approach to completing homework problems. The outstanding ancillary package includes full multimedia support, online homework, and a content-rich Web site that provides extensive support for instructors and students. The CAPA (Computer-assisted Personalized Approach), WebAssign, and University of Texas homework delivery systems give instructors flexibility in assigning online homework.

Economics (MyEconLab and EBook 2-Sem Student Access Package, 2nd Ed) ReviewEasy to understand but still delves into complex concepts. I loved the examples that the author uses, so the point where sometimes when studying I would get distracted by anecdotes and start reading all the way through totally engrossed. It is very interesting. ...Too bad I screwed up the class anyways... took too many courses.Economics (MyEconLab and EBook 2-Sem Student Access Package, 2nd Ed) Overview Hubbard & O'Brien motivate the study of economics through real business examples. The book motivates users by demonstrating how real business uses economics to make real decisions on a daily basis. Covers the different Market Structures in an intuitive fashion so that readers of all backgrounds and fields can grasp the importance and flow of these concepts. Chapter opening cases, examples and figures motivate the economic principles covered, while Solved Problems provide models of how to solve an economic problem – keeping readers focused on the main ideas of each chapter, and preventing them from getting bogged down due to a lack of basic math or "word problem" skills. In-depth coverage of economics with particular focus on Perfect Competition, Monopolistic Competition, Oligopoly and extensive coverage of game theory, Monopoly Economic Efficiency, Government Price Setting, and Taxes, Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply Analysis.MARKET: For anyone in business who wants to benefit from understanding the economic forces behind their work.

The Calculus of Friendship: What a Teacher and a Student Learned about Life while Corresponding about Math ReviewThis is an absolutely beautiful book about the relationship through letters of a high school math teacher and one of his students who becomes a world class mathematician. It's about their lives and the mathematics that bound them together. I have read quite a few memoirs and don't recall any that choked me up like this one did, I want to thank Dr. Strogatz for being so open. Also, the math in the book is very interesting and well explained, if I could give if more than five stars I would.The Calculus of Friendship: What a Teacher and a Student Learned about Life while Corresponding about Math Overview
The Calculus of Friendship is the story of an extraordinary connection between a teacher and a student, as chronicled through more than thirty years of letters between them. What makes their relationship unique is that it is based almost entirely on a shared love of calculus. For them, calculus is more than a branch of mathematics; it is a game they love playing together, a constant when all else is in flux. The teacher goes from the prime of his career to retirement, competes in whitewater kayaking at the international level, and loses a son. The student matures from high school math whiz to Ivy League professor, suffers the sudden death of a parent, and blunders into a marriage destined to fail. Yet through it all they take refuge in the haven of calculus--until a day comes when calculus is no longer enough.

Like calculus itself, The Calculus of Friendship is an exploration of change. It's about the transformation that takes place in a student's heart, as he and his teacher reverse roles, as they age, as they are buffeted by life itself. Written by a renowned teacher and communicator of mathematics, The Calculus of Friendship is warm, intimate, and deeply moving. The most inspiring ideas of calculus, differential equations, and chaos theory are explained through metaphors, images, and anecdotes in a way that all readers will find beautiful, and even poignant. Math enthusiasts, from high school students to professionals, will delight in the offbeat problems and lucid explanations in the letters.

For anyone whose life has been changed by a mentor, The Calculus of Friendship will be an unforgettable journey.

R. M. Felder's R. W. Rousseau's Elementary Principles (Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes, 3rd Edition 2005 Edition Integrated Media and Study Tools, with Student Workbook )(2005) ReviewThis text is a concise, well-written, introductory text regarding mass, mole, and energy balances. Though the book does lack a little as far as its discourse on thermodynamics. There are a few typos, but that should not distract the reader from learning chemical engineering principles. Also, this book is a wonderful resource because of its extensive thermophysical properties tables and other important data. I have used these tables in fluids, kinetics, and heat/mass transfer.R. M. A Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations ReviewThis is the best overview of Maxwell's equations I have ever come across. I cannot praise it enough for it's brilliant clarity.
If you have taken or are taking an electromagnetism or vector calculus course, you may have run into the classic problem of not being able to see the forest through the trees. These courses can be very dense, and anything that can help give a sense of perspective can be very helpful. Daniel Fleisch's book is just such a tool. It provides a thorough overview of Maxwell's equations with stunning clarity. Each equation is broken down into it's component parts, and the physical significance of each part is thoroughly explained. In this way, not only are the core concepts of Maxwell's equations made clear, but many concepts from vector calculus are also brought out in crystal clarity, (I got much more out of this book than I did the often recommended "Div, Grad, Curl"). It will help you see the "forest through the trees".
Also of note are the problem sets at the end of each chapter. The problems work very well to reinforce the concepts from each chapter. They are not overly difficult or too simplistic. They are geared specifically at reinforcing concepts. The author has also posted on his web site a set of solutions for every problem, and each of the problems is thoroughly worked out with clear explanations. This is a HUGE plus for anyone picking up this book for self-study.
In my mind this book is a perfect compliment to an electromagnetism or a vector calculus class (or as a review after having taken such a class). Although the writing is clear enough that one could probably get a lot even without having had a vector calculus class, ideally one would have had at least some minimal exposure to vector calculus. It's not that you need to be an expert in vector calculus; all the concepts are explained very well in the book and the actual calculus you need for solving the problems is minimal, but in my mind the book will work best for those with some exposure to vector calculus.
My only suggestion to the author would be to include a table summarizing Maxwell's equations, (and perhaps a table of some basic constants). Other than that, this is a perfect book. It is THE standard by which other self-study books ought to be compared.
Update: When I wrote the above review I was half way through chapter 4 (of five chapters). Having completed the book, I do want to point out that the beginning of chapter 5 ('From Maxwell's Equations to the Wave Equation) does include a summary of Maxwell's equations. It would have been nice to have such a table at the front or back of the book for quick reference, but the summary is there, contrary to what I had originally thought. Chapter five also has a nice summary of the del operator and its use in finding the gradient, divergence, and curl. And finally, chapter five provides a very good physical description of the Divergence Theorem and Stokes' Theorem. So all in all, there is really little one can fault in this book. It's the book to get if you want to see the forest through the trees.[Side note to author (written before the above update, and answered by the author in the comments): I believe the solution to problem 2.3 for surfaces 'A' and 'B' should include a factor of 1/2 since the area is a triangle; I did not see a feedback form on the website, or I would have posted there.]
A Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations OverviewGauss's law for electric fields, Gauss's law for magnetic fields, Faraday's law, and the Ampere-Maxwell law are four of the most influential equations in science. In this guide for students, each equation is the subject of an entire chapter, with detailed, plain-language explanations of the physical meaning of each symbol in the equation, for both the integral and differential forms. The final chapter shows how Maxwell's equations may be combined to produce the wave equation, the basis for the electromagnetic theory of light. This book is a wonderful resource for undergraduate and graduate courses in electromagnetism and electromagnetics. A website hosted by the author at www.cambridge.org/9780521701471 contains interactive solutions to every problem in the text as well as audio podcasts to walk students through each chapter.

Trigonometry for College Students ReviewTraditionally located after functions and before calculus, trigonometry combines elementary proofs with everyday applications. Smith follows this mold, but breaks step in a very positive manner. The conventional wisdom has been to consider the trigonometric functions to be the ratios of the sides of a right triangle first, and then generalize. In this case the general functions are followed by the special cases, and it works.
The functions are defined as coordinates on the unit circle and then it is on to the consequences of the definitions. Several obvious identities are immediately presented with proofs, reinforcing the functional approach to trigonometry, as well as introducing the concept of proof. After graphing and additional proofs of identities, the inverse functions are defined. Only then does right angle trigonometry make an appearance. The book closes with complex numbers, polar curves, and conic sections, with much of it being labeled as optional.
As is the case with books of this type, the majority of the problems are standard issue. However, some of them show a great deal of creativity. For example, if you wish to understand the path of Luke Skywalker's fighter as it attacks the Death Star, turn to page 207. And if you need to know how far Mr. T. must throw his grappling hook to catch the top of the building so that he can climb up and stomp the bad guys, turn to page 208. Such problems add spice to the text that will delight all readers with a touch of youth in their hearts.
All chapters end with a list of chapter objectives, key terms, summary problems, and an application for further study. There is an occasional historical note about certain topics and solutions to all odd problems appear at the back of the book. A calculator is required to do the majority of computational style problems.
There are some areas that are poorly done. The inverse trigonometric functions are poorly presented as the restricted graphs of the functions appear after the definitions. It would have been much clearer if the presentation had been more simultaneous. In the preface a technique called framing is introduced, being described as innovative and unique. Actually, it is nothing that the typical teacher of this material will fail to recognize. The taking of one cycle of the function and repeating it after suitable alterations is a standard way of presenting the periodic nature of trigonometry .
However, these weaknesses are in no way fatal, and this book is an excellent option for anyone looking for a textbook of trigonometry with the right mix of functions, proofs, and applications to everyday situations.
There is additional material for this book:
. An answer book for all problems;
. EXPTEST Question bank for IBM compatible computers;
. Instructor's manual;
. Solutions and study guide;
. Trigpak, a computerized tutorial for IBM compatible computers.
Published in Journal of Recreational Mathematics, reprinted with permission.Trigonometry for College Students OverviewKnown for its student-friendly approach, this book starts with a unit-circle approach. With a focus on applications, it helps students investigate and understand the trigonometric functions, their graphs, their relationships to one another, and ways in which they can be used in a variety of applications.

A Student's Guide to Fourier Transforms: With Applications in Physics and Engineering ReviewI was appalled at the poor reviews this book has received. It
has been a tremendous help to me as a student and now lecturer
teaching this material at post-graduate level. It is exactly
what the title says - a student guide. It gives a very clear
introduction to the Fourier transform using abundant graphical
examples. Multi-dimensional transforms also get a brief
mention, and the book ends with a simple FFT routine written in
BASIC. Any interested student like myself will find this fun
to play with. Compared with other more expensive, weightier
books apparently written to make the subject as obscure as
possible, James's book is a delightful concise 128 page read. The
reader should gain an intuitive feel for many of the important
properties of the FT which will help greatly before tackling
more in-depth treatments. I think it is much better value for
money than many maths books on offer. Those wishing for the
most complicated explanation of Fourier transforms possible,
with no diagrams, applications or humour could try the book
by G.H.Hardy instead.A Student's Guide to Fourier Transforms: With Applications in Physics and Engineering OverviewThis new edition of a successful textbook for undergraduate students in physics, computer science and electrical engineering describes important contemporary ideas in practical science and information technology at an understandable level, illustrated with worked examples and copious diagrams. The field is covered broadly rather than in depth, and includes references to more extended works on various topics. This new edition is slightly expanded, and includes additional new material in the applications sections.

Precalculus plus MyMathLab Student Access Kit (3rd Edition) ReviewThis review applies to all books written by Marvin Bittinger. I have used
his books on elementary algebra, college algebra, precalculus, and calculus. His writing is clear, concise, and always on the level of the
maturity of his audience. The examples are excellent and the problems are
suitable for each book. He doesn't "dumb down" the material nor is the
presentation overly rigorous. I wish he would right a full blown 1,000 -
1,200 page three semester text for calculus.Precalculus plus MyMathLab Student Access Kit (3rd Edition) OverviewThe BPB team has created a book where the use of the graphing calculator is optional but visualizing the mathematics is not. By creating algebraic-visual side-by-sides, the authors show students the relationship of the algebraic solution with the visual, often graphical, solution.In addition to helping students visualize the math with the side-by-sides, the authors focus on helping students make the connection between x-intercepts, zeros, and solutions, both visually and algebraically.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
