Macroscale And Microscale Organic Experiments: Text with Student CD-ROM ReviewI received this required text in prime shape from Amazon.com, first. Amazon always does such a wonderful job of getting you the product you need in good shape when you need it. The product itself? Very good explanations of how the glassware goes together, what to do, how to do it, and all with a good explanation of WHY. WHAT you are doing, WHY you are doing it, and HOW it works are chief among the reasons I like the explanations of the experiments. It does not give TOO MUCH away, however. You do still have to perform the experiments and come to a conclusion as to what the UNKNOWN was, if that happens to be the case, and other mysteries such as that, but in terms of learning, it is excellent! And the experiments are neatly divided into the Macroscale and the Microscale procedures. This is obvious, but it should be in this case. Very good use of English, clear and easy to understand - even complex areas are explained fully and legibly. Excellent use of rich graphics and photographs where appropriate, and a very useful set of appendices at the back with everything from normal values for most blood tests to a Periodic Table. Accompanying CD and website both very helpful for the A&P student.
Highly recommended.
Why 4 stars? Since I am not in the USA, I have to use a scaled down version of the MyA&P website and find it just a little confusing to find my way in (once I'm there it's OK though). TimeLinks: Fifth Grade, The United States, Volume 1 Student Edition ReviewI used this textbook for my daughter's 5th grade homeschooling curriculum. This book is the first volume in a series of two. My guess would be that volume 2 is for 6th grade social studies. Volume 1 starts with pre-colonial America, explaining the way of life of major Native American groups. It then moves to the early exploration of America by Europeans and their interactions with native populations. I explains the effects on culture, disease and diets due to the interactions amongst the two groups. It then covers the exploration and colonization by the British, Spanish, French and Dutch in North America and the colonial way of life. The book ends with the American Declaration of Independence, American victories, and the end of the war. Each lesson was short and to the point. There are basic questions at the end of each lesson to enforce concepts learned, and there are review and assessments at the end of each different Unit. There is a small Geography handbook at the end of the book, covering the basics of geography. The Practice of Statistics & Student CD-ROM ReviewI teach AP Statistics out of this book, and I dislike it intensely. The problem isn't with the statistical concepts, which are on a par with other AP Statistics books, but with the organization of the book and support materials as an aid for teachers:
1) The topics are treated in a non-standard and unintuitive order. Data production is only introduced after data analysis. Regression is introduced far too early, and entirely without mathematical justification.
2) The problems are peppered throughout the text, rather than placed conveniently at the end of the chapter. The problems are very uneven in terms of effort-to-learning.
3) Key topics are buried in problems, and not highlighted in the teacher's support materials.
4) Support materials are scattered - some in the teacher's edition, some in the solutions guide, some in the Resource Binder.
5) The Resource Binder is detailed, but organized in a completely haphazard fashion; it's a hodge-podge of "oh, by the way, here's some stuff that worked when I taught it that one time" nuggets, rather than a planned support for teachers. "Guidance" is colloquial and unplanned. It does me no good to write "you might be tempted to delay this section until chapter 13 and then..." [Resource Binder, teacher commentary on section 4.2] -- either this is the time to introduce the concept or it isn't; I expect the textbook's authors to have worked this out. Significantly, the Resource Binder is not a corrected version of the 2nd Edition, but an almost entirely new work with different concepts, different suggestions, and different errors and typos. It's as if the authors didn't correct the last edition, but simply started over.
6) There are FAR too many errors in the the teaching guide, the solutions manual and the Resource Binder. Be prepared to do EVERY problem you assign, because you can NEVER rely on the answer keys. This is especially egregious on Chapter tests.
7) The mathematical motivation for some concepts is non-existent. The authors go so far as to state that some key concepts are "advanced mathematics" - but they then go no further. I find that I am continually supplementing the math concepts with another text.
8) The writing is flabby and meandering. Students report that they find it garrulous and tedious.
I can add more, but you get the gist of it. I address this review to teachers who are handed this book to consider for adoption: do NOT adopt it. Roxy Peck's book, which I've also used, is far superior, especially in its organization for a teacher's use. I am sure there are other good texts, but this isn't one of them - at least from the teacher's viewpoint.The Practice of Statistics & Student CD-ROM OverviewTailored to mirror the AP Statistics course, The Practice of Statistics became a classroom favorite. This edition incorporates a number of first-time features to help students prepare for the AP exam, plus more simulations and statistical thinking help, and instructions for the TI-89 graphic calculator.

Teacher prep. time is minimal. The other instructor has a strong background in chemistry so at first we relied on her but that background is not necessary to sucessfully use this material. I appreciate that although the text is simplified for the age group it still uses proper terminology and is not "dumbed down". The page layout is attractive and easy to sort out. (Not too much crammed into the pages.) Real Science-4-Kids, Physics Level 1, Student Text ReviewHaving heard rave reviews about this set (text, lab book, language connects) I was excited to teach this curriculum at a homeschool co-op in which I'm involved. (I used to teach physics and chemistry in the private and public sector.) As I have worked my way through the text and labs, I've been surprised at the number of issues that keep coming up. Call me "new fashioned" but let's work in metric (any lab that requires measurement). That's what 'real' scientists do. Call me picky but when she asks the kids to make a graph, she doesn't even get the independent and dependent variables on the right axis (the penny battery lab). She calls for equipment in the materials list but it isn't discussed how they're supposed to use in the actual procedure (the marble lab). Some charts are very poorly laid out (the slinky lab). Explanations are poorly written (the electroscope lab). Even the banana smash lab worked better w/play doh. The cars make a great observable imprint. Why waste a banana? I've had more success w/the Janet Van Cleave book on Physics experiments and demonstrations. The text is ok but lacks any excitement. Paul Hewitt's Conceptual Physics, while for an older crowd, can completely be used for this 3rd-5th grade age group and has wonderful analogies, graphics, and explanations. I've used it to supplement what I've been teaching at the co-op and my 9-11 year olds are doing great with it. My opinion: not worth the money.Real Science-4-Kids, Physics Level 1, Student Text OverviewReal Science-4-Kids Physics, Level I, written at a 4th and 5th grade level, presents college level physics in a way children can understand. Concepts included are: Laws of physics and the scientific method; force, work and energy; potential and kinetic energy; motion; chemical and electrical energy; current, magnets and electromagnets; light and sound energy; and conservation of energy.

Physics for Scientists and Engineers, Chapters 1-39 (with Student Tools CD-ROM) ReviewFor my physics for physics majors series, my professor is using the Giancoli books. Within those books there are multiple problems that the book does not give you any clue how to solve. The sheer number of these problems eliminates the chance that they are there to help the physics student figure it out for themselves. I was having "fun" with one of the problems in the book, when one of my neighbors stated that he remembered doing a similar problem from his Serway book. He showed me his book, and sure enough, there was a detailed explanation of how to solve that type of problem, and how they derived their equations. The fact that they used no calculus to derive the equation when it was unneccesary in my opinion was a plus. Gives short synposis on all types of ocean facts and trivia; from where the deepest point of the ocean is on earth and HOW they measure it, to describing various types of jellyfish. Is jam packed with relevant and fun facts written in a style that ANYONE can easily understand and absorbe. Each topic(ex.seals)in discussed in one to two pages and gives you the relevant & fun facts without going into to much "scientific" detail and includes wonderful photographs. I have enjoyed this book so much, I am in the process of purchasing the whole series of Time Life Student Library of books. It was extremely helpful for him because it was interesting and cut right to the chase. It doesn't blog the reader down with unnecessary information and is written in such a way that allows the reader to capture the most important details of the topic in an interesting way. I would highly recommend this book for junior high through high school. (Even if High Schoolers have another book, this book does a great job of simplifying the information so kids can remember the importance of the topic.) I have seen several textbooks that contain so much information, and the kids don't retain the information shortly after they finish the course.
