Calculus and Its Applications plus MyMathLab Student Starter Kit (9th Edition) ReviewI teach a high school Calculus class for kids who are capable/competent mathematicians, but not really interested in the AP level at an independent school. We like Marv Bittinger's books because they provide a nice balance of applications and connections without losing sight of the math. We continue to use this out-of-date book because it is more readable than most Calculus texts and strikes a nice balance between the rigor of the math and applications that help students to feel a connection to the ideas. The organization of the material is pretty good, although I often salt in the introduction of simple trigonometric functions throughout my instruction, rather than waiting until the end of the course, where it appears in the book. We have found that our students have a lot of fun with the problems about exponential growth and decay, particularly the application of the laws of cooling in solving murders. It seems a little odd to nearly finish differentiation before exploring logarithms and then have to go back and consider derivatives again, but I have gotten used to that. Overall, I like the depth at which this book seeks to travel and the problems and explanations.Calculus and Its Applications plus MyMathLab Student Starter Kit (9th Edition) OverviewThe Seventh Edition of Calculus and Its Applications builds on its reputation as one of the most student-oriented and clearly written Applied Calculus texts available. The optional use of technology has been significantly increased in the Seventh Edition. The content has been streamlined, applications and exercises have been updated, including new data sources where appropriate, and the presentation of topics has been modernized through the use of technology.--This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Economics Today plus MyEconLab plus eBook 2-semester Student Access Kit (14th Edition) ReviewI'm a college graduate planning on going to Grad School in the next year or so. I've also spent some years in the military, so I would assume that I have some knowledge in what makes a book good/bad in terms of explaining what it's supposed to teach.
This textbook is horrible and I feel sorry for any freshman/sophomore/AP Economics student out there who is required to use this book for their economics class. The explanations and examples in this book are either vague or aren't explained very well. There are times when I'll spend an hour on a concept because its explanations are poorly written.
If you are part of the unlucky group who has to use this for text, get ready to do some intense reading just to understand what the authors are talking about. I can't wait for this quarter to be over. On the bright side, it comes with a workbook that does a pretty good job of preparing you for the tests as long as the teacher uses the questions from the manual that they use.

Life & Student CD-ROM ReviewFirst, just to let you know what perspective I am reviewing this from, I am a college student, and this text was used in my 200-level introductory biology course. Since I am a student, and not a professor or expert of any sort, I am evaluating the book based on how helpful it was to me in learning the material. For input from biology professors, you'll have to take a look at some of the other reviews here.
"Life: The Science of Biology" has definitely been one of the better biology textbooks I've used. The text is well written, with clear explanations and plenty of real-life examples to help you tie small details into the bigger picture. But beware: The information here is incredibly in-depth, so if you're only looking for a basic overview of biology, you may actually want a slightly simpler book, otherwise you may get lost in all the details. It was perfect for my 200-level class, and gave me all the information I needed, but I don't think it would be the ideal text for an introductory biology course. One other reviewer here mentioned that she used this text to teach her AP biology students. I took AP biology in high school (and got a 5 on the exam) and can guarantee you that this text contains far, far more than you would ever need to know to get a perfect score. It's definitely a college level text.
The book has numerous detailed, well-labeled diagrams that are helpful in understanding different processes. In fact, being a rather visual, hands-on learner, I sometimes found the step-by-step diagrams easier to follow than the text itself. There are also plenty of great photographs and other helpful images. At the end of each chapter there is a bare-bones overview of key points you should know, and a self-quiz to help you evaluate your grasp of the material. At the end of the book there is an extensive glossary with definitions of key terms.
Unfortunately, there is one mistake in this book, to be found in chapter 34, "Deuterostomate Animals." On page 674, some text from the previous page is repeated, and this in turn means that part of the section entitled "Primates and the Origin of Humans" is cut off, even ending in mid-sentence. The following page is filled entirely with pictures and diagrams, no text, and then on page 676 where the text starts up again, it skips to the beginning of the next section, entirely leaving out a chunk of information. This is the only place in the book where I found such a problem.
There is a website to accompany this text (www.thelifewire.com). I never found it necessary to use the site for my studies, but it may be helpful for some. It contains chapter summaries, animated tutorials, text-related activities, self quizzes, suggestions for further reading, and a glossary of key terms (same as the one found at the back of the book). The book is also supposed to come with a CD-ROM. My school's bookstore was selling the books and CDs separately, and I did not purchase the CD and so cannot evaluate its usefulness. I know I learned everything I needed without it, and I suspect the book and website alone would be sufficient for most students' needs.
Aside from the glitch in chapter 34, mentioned above, I have found nothing to complain about with this book. I will definitely be hanging on to it for future reference, and highly recommend it to anyone needing a detailed, comprehensive biology text. NOTE: This review refers to the 7th edition of this book.Life & Student CD-ROM Overview"Life" integrates scholarship, an engaging narrative style, effective pedagogy, and art-work into a cohesive presentation of biological data and ideas that should interest students. The third edition features a new co-author - H.Craig Heller and new information - from new molecular techniques in biotechnology, immunology, and systematics. New chapters have been added on conservation biology and on recombinant DNA. Organized differently, the text addresses evolution before diversity and physiology. The artwork blends scientific precision and visual impact.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Classroom Literacy Assessment: Making Sense of What Students Know and Do (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) ReviewMost of the articles are well-structured. The autghor or authors define and discuss the literacy concept (e.g. word recogniotion)with a historical perspective. Then they proceed to review research literature about the concept. The articles explore both effective assessment techniques as well as strategies. Most of the articles also provide vivid descriptions on how the assessment technique was used in the classroom. I'm quite impressed because the reader gets the information needed to understand the issues that have to do with literacy. Everything discussed and suggested is research supported.Classroom Literacy Assessment: Making Sense of What Students Know and Do (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) OverviewShowcasing assessment practices that can help teachers plan effective instruction, this book addresses the real-world complexities of teaching literacy in grades K-8. Leading contributors present trustworthy approaches that examine learning processes as well as learning products, that yield information on how the learning environment can be improved, and that are conducted in the context of authentic reading and writing activities. The volume provides workable, nuts-and-bolts ideas for incorporating assessment into instruction in all major literacy domains and with diverse learners, including students in high-poverty schools and those with special learning needs. It is illustrated throughout with helpful concrete examples.

Foundations of Education (Student Text) ReviewThis is a very good, probably the best textbook available in the U.S. regarding the topic of history and philosophy of education, intended for undergraduate students. The authors did minor updateds to the previous edition. Since there has been little change as to history and philosophy of education in the last few years, you do not have to buy the last edition unless your instructor requires so.
The content is presented in 16 chapters, as follow:
1-2 Teaching profession, preparation of teachers
3-5 World roots of education, Pioneers, historical development of education in the U.S.
6-8 Governing-administering, finances and legal aspects of public education
9-11 Cultural and social aspects, race/social class, equal access to the educational system
12-14 Philosophycal aspects, the purpose of education,curriculum
15-16 Internation education, school effectiveness and reform in the U.S.Foundations of Education (Student Text) OverviewHighly respected in the introduction to educational foundations market, Foundations of Education provides a comprehensive overview and analysis of topics and material typically taught in foundations courses. This text is written for the student who is preparing for a teaching career and needs to understand the key educational issues and policies affecting American education. The comprehensive and substantive coverage includes all foundational areas: social, philosophical, historical, political, economic, curricular, and legal. New features in the Tenth Edition provide a greater emphasis on the theme "From Pre-Service to Practice," helping the authors fulfill their goal of preparing students for their careers. Connecting to Certification sections prepare students for their certification exams, and From Preservice to Practice case studies highlight real-world classroom practices. For the first time, our award-winning CL Video Cases are fully integrated throughout Foundations of Education. Feature boxes and correlations used throughout the chapter direct students to view the videos on the passkey-protected website. The videos further students' understanding of key foundational concepts while allowing them to view real-life classrooms in action.

The Practice of Statistics & Student CD-ROM ReviewI teach AP Statistics out of this book, and I dislike it intensely. The problem isn't with the statistical concepts, which are on a par with other AP Statistics books, but with the organization of the book and support materials as an aid for teachers:
1) The topics are treated in a non-standard and unintuitive order. Data production is only introduced after data analysis. Regression is introduced far too early, and entirely without mathematical justification.
2) The problems are peppered throughout the text, rather than placed conveniently at the end of the chapter. The problems are very uneven in terms of effort-to-learning.
3) Key topics are buried in problems, and not highlighted in the teacher's support materials.
4) Support materials are scattered - some in the teacher's edition, some in the solutions guide, some in the Resource Binder.
5) The Resource Binder is detailed, but organized in a completely haphazard fashion; it's a hodge-podge of "oh, by the way, here's some stuff that worked when I taught it that one time" nuggets, rather than a planned support for teachers. "Guidance" is colloquial and unplanned. It does me no good to write "you might be tempted to delay this section until chapter 13 and then..." [Resource Binder, teacher commentary on section 4.2] -- either this is the time to introduce the concept or it isn't; I expect the textbook's authors to have worked this out. Significantly, the Resource Binder is not a corrected version of the 2nd Edition, but an almost entirely new work with different concepts, different suggestions, and different errors and typos. It's as if the authors didn't correct the last edition, but simply started over.
6) There are FAR too many errors in the the teaching guide, the solutions manual and the Resource Binder. Be prepared to do EVERY problem you assign, because you can NEVER rely on the answer keys. This is especially egregious on Chapter tests.
7) The mathematical motivation for some concepts is non-existent. The authors go so far as to state that some key concepts are "advanced mathematics" - but they then go no further. I find that I am continually supplementing the math concepts with another text.
8) The writing is flabby and meandering. Students report that they find it garrulous and tedious.
I can add more, but you get the gist of it. I address this review to teachers who are handed this book to consider for adoption: do NOT adopt it. Roxy Peck's book, which I've also used, is far superior, especially in its organization for a teacher's use. I am sure there are other good texts, but this isn't one of them - at least from the teacher's viewpoint.The Practice of Statistics & Student CD-ROM OverviewTailored to mirror the AP Statistics course, The Practice of Statistics became a classroom favorite. This edition incorporates a number of first-time features to help students prepare for the AP exam, plus more simulations and statistical thinking help, and instructions for the TI-89 graphic calculator.

Applying Regression and Correlation: A Guide for Students and Researchers ReviewThe authors make regression not only interesting but fairly painless. This is the clearest stats book ever. It even explained concepts from lower level stats classes so that they made more sense. Examples actually clarified material as well! All stats books should be written like this.Applying Regression and Correlation: A Guide for Students and Researchers OverviewThis book takes a fresh look at applying regression analysis in the behavioural sciences by introducing the reader to regression analysis through a simple model-building approach.

The authors start with the basics and begin by re-visiting the mean, and the standard deviation, with which most readers will already be familiar, and show that they can be thought of a least squares model.The book then shows that this least squares model is actually a special case of a regression analysis and can be extended to deal with first one, and then more than one independent variable.

Extending the model from the mean to a regression analysis provides a powerful, but simple, way of thinking about what students believe

Across Asia on a Bicycle: The Journey of Two American Students from Constantinople to Peking ReviewWhat an incredible story these young men had to tell! The book picks up with the Asia part of their journey and while reading their accounts of the people and places they saw I was transported back to a time when all travel was "adventure" travel. Included is the account of their insane-by-today's-standards summit of Mt Ararat. This book is for cyclists and non-cyclists alike and is compelling reading - giving a world view and pre-World War perspective on the people of the middle and far east. These young men from America were the first to demonstrate the "safety" bicycle to the Asian people and may very well have sparked the common use of bicycles throughout the world.Across Asia on a Bicycle: The Journey of Two American Students from Constantinople to Peking OverviewBetween 1891 and 1893, two young men would travel over 15,000 miles by bicycle in what was then the "longest continuous land journey made around the world." In this book they describe their trip across Asia through areas few outsiders ever visited. The book also describes their climb of Mount Ararat, the first ever by Americans. This book has been out of print for over a century, and this edition contains additional notes about the background to their trip.

Engaging the Disengaged: How Schools Can Help Struggling Students Succeed ReviewEngaging the Disengaged: How Schools Can Help Struggling Student Succeed by Lois Brown Easton (Corwin Press, 304 pages, $37.95), reviewed by Dan Condon
Far too many young people sit in classes disengaged; far too many drop out of school altogether. The drop-out statistics are frightening enough, but no one really knows how many more students merely endure school, sitting in the back of the room, tuned out. Engaging the Disengaged is addressed to those of us who work with such students, and also to those who work with the teachers and principals who work with such students - district administrators, for example. Finally, it speaks to teacher education and continuing education programs that prepare teachers and administrators to work in schools that "house" such students. The reader will encounter many different voices from K-12 schools throughout the country in this book: voices of students, voices of their teachers, and voices of those who observe these students and teachers working together.
This book is about changing the culture of schools so that they are more humane and habitable for struggling learners - really, for all learners. Easton argues that schools should make important changes, such as creating whole-school learning communities. Teachers can certainly change their own classrooms, but school wide change is likely to have a greater effect. In fact, redesigned schools - not just high schools but all schools that serve struggling students - can help keep such students in school, learning, graduating, and contributing to a society that needs them.
Easton organizes her ideas into two sections: Culture and Curriculum, and Instruction and Assessment. The final chapter pulls it all together by looking at the effect of school on the whole student. Topics include a testing culture vs. a learning culture; the importance of building relationships and creating community; how principles govern a school better than rules; building a democracy in schools; how really to be standards-based; innovative instructional strategies; and performance assessment for learning.
For over a decade, I have been working with young people who have found success to be elusive in their high school experiences. Few were on track to graduating and many had dropped out. Easton's book shares realistic and inspiring examples of the kind of engagement that transforms such kids' lives.
Based in Estes Park, Colorado, Dan Condon is the Associate Director of the Professional Development Center, a CES Affiliate Center, at Eagle Rock School, a CES Mentor School.Engaging the Disengaged: How Schools Can Help Struggling Students Succeed OverviewThis resource helps teachers motivate struggling students with strategies that harness their interests and creativity, and encourages educators to create positive learning cultures for all students.

Service-Learning and Social Justice: Engaging Students in Social Change ReviewMs. Cipolle has been teaching French at Benilde-St. Margaret's School in Minnesota, USA since 1976. As she became a more experienced professional, her vocational purpose shifted from teaching French to developing social justice consciousness among students, in line with her school's commitment to Catholic social teachings. She has initiated and supported service-learning programs that have aimed to develop social justice within students. Her long tenure at the school has allowed her to address a question that I often face as well as a service-learning practitioner: what long-term impact does high school service learning programs make on students? Through her longitudinal research she developed a theory that responds to this question, which identifies four essential elements of critical consciousness: self awareness, awareness of others, awareness of social issues, ethic of service/change agent (p. 11). She also offers a developmental path in which students grow from charity to caring to social justice to critical consciousness (p. 58). In the second half of the book, she offers practical advice for developing social justice education programs, even including a brief section on social entrepreneurship (p. 131), a concept that my students in Hong Kong find very attractive. This is a serious, thorough, and well-written book with many similarities to ideas discussed in my blog on social conscience education.Service-Learning and Social Justice: Engaging Students in Social Change OverviewService-Learning and Social Justice provides everything administrators and teachers need to build service-learning programs that prepare students as engaged citizens committed to equity and justice. Cipolle describes practical strategies for classroom teachers along with the theoretical framework so readers can deftly move beyond the book to a meaningful program for their schools. Writing in a conversational style, the author explains service-learning's unlimited potential in terms of student empowerment and academic achievement and as tool in developing a student's a lifetime commitment to service and social justice. This book's contribution to new knowledge and practice is three-fold as it promotes (a) understanding of how individuals become committed to social justice, (b) identification of how one's orientation to service-learning and social justice changes as one develops a more critical consciousness, and (c) practical strategies that teachers can use to support and guide students as they become more critically aware. Practitioners will improve their service-learning programs and have a framework for preparing students for their experiences, as well as ideas for reflection activities. Educators will gain a better understanding of the psychology and sociology of developing a commitment to service for social justice.

Becoming a Doctor: From Student to Specialist, Doctor-Writers Share Their Experiences ReviewWhile in the exam room, gowned in that flimsy blue paper robe, have you ever wondered what is going on in the mind of the doctor perched on the stool in front of you?
Judging from the essays in this book, there's plenty going on in there! These wonderful stories about the preparation for and practice of medicine come from some very gifted doctors whose pens obviously do more than just scratch out prescriptions.
I particularly enjoyed the essays that illuminate the day-to-day life of a resident, an intern, or a practicing doctor. "Pas de Deux" by Danielle Ofri, "First in My Class" by Chris Stookey, and "A Fire, Deliberately Set," by Peggy Sarjeant are a few of my favorites.
I've been on a medical reading kick lately and can also recommend Ask Me Why I Hurt: The Kids Nobody Wants and the Doctor Who Heals Them by Dr. Randy Christensen and Gray Matter: A Neurosurgeon Discovers the Power of Prayer . . . One Patient at a Time by Dr. David Levy.
But, truly, if I insist on reading fantastic books like these late into the night, I'm going to have to get my doctor to write me a prescription for Ambien, so I can finally get some sleep!Becoming a Doctor: From Student to Specialist, Doctor-Writers Share Their Experiences Overview

Immigrant Students and Literacy: Reading, Writing, and Remembering (Practitioner Inquiry) ReviewThe word "literacy" in the title is meant in the broadest sense, as it is not about basic reading instruction. It provides antecdotal examples of writing and communication inquiries/exercises/lesson plans to engage students outside of the typical American cultural construct, which the author claims led to better results with measures such as standardized tests. Although the subjects were fifth graders, the pedagogy seems to apply to a wide range of ages. Reviewer's recommendation: Try a "search within" the book to see if it is relevant to your needs.Immigrant Students and Literacy: Reading, Writing, and Remembering (Practitioner Inquiry) OverviewThis powerful book demonstrates how culturally responsive teaching can make learning come alive. Drawing on his experience as a fifth-grade teacher in a multiethnic school where children spoke over 14 different home languages, the author reveals how he created a language arts curriculum from the students' own rich cultural resources, narratives, and identities.

Student Successes With Thinking Maps(R): School-Based Research, Results, and Models for Achievement Using Visual Tools ReviewStudent Successes With Thinking Maps(R): School-Based Research, Results, and Models for Achievement Using Visual Tools
by David Hyerle
According to my personal assessment, this book is the third in a trilogy of research-based books written by David Hyerle, an educational researcher & founder of Innovative Sciences in the 70's/80's.
The earlier two research-based books are:
- Visual Tools for Constructing Knowledge;
- Field Guide to Using Visual Tools;
The author is very smart to use these three research-based books as a self-promotional vehicle to market his core learning technology, embedded in what they call the 'Thinking Maps'.
In a nut shell, 'Thinking Maps' integrate thinking skills & mapping techniques. They are based on our fundamental thinking processes: We analyzes information in more or less eight different ways: define, describe, compare/contrast, classify, break down into parts, sequence,
cause/effect, establish relationships between things.
Application-wise, they comprise eight specific types of graphic organisers (the author prefers to use the term, visual tools) to help students & teachers in constructing knowledge, organising information, solving problems & communicating with others.
The eight tools are:
- Brace Map;
- Bridge Map;
- Bubble map;
- Circle map;
- Double Bubble Map;
- Flow Map;
- Multi-Flow Map;
- Tree Map;
Additionally, the core technology also includes a proprietary software, plus videos & other training manuals.
I can sense that their 'Thinking Maps' technology has been influenced somewhat by the Whimbey method, developed by Dr Arthur Whimbey. He wrote two great classics, 'Analytical Reading & Reasoning' & 'Mastering Reading Through Reasoning'.
There is only one singular snobbish aspect of 'Thinking Maps' products: They are only restricted to schools for system-wide implementation. Hence, the technology is, regrettably, not available to private individuals. They don't even bother to entertain enquires from solos.
In my earlier review of 'Visual Tools for Constructing Knowledge', I had mentioned that "This book is more suitable for teachers and students, and not so suitable for business readers...it cannot be used to cover all kinds of reading materials in schools. For examples, a story grid - which is not covered in the book - would be more appropriate to shape understanding of literature texts; a time line or time series - also not overed - would be more appropriate to track chronological events in history textbooks."
I added further that "For the businessman, this book can be somewhat boring, although one or two of the tools e.g. cluster and fishbone diagrams, can be used to organise visually one's thoughts or ideas while reading business books."
I have concluded in my review as follows: "Nevertheless, this book is still worth reading, especially if you want a deep understanding of why we are 'visual'. Also, David Hyerle's tools and ideas are still useful for the business reader, especially if one is pursuing business management studies e.g. MBA, in the evenings. The visual tools can be useful in that respect, particularly for probing understanding through the text, and taking/making personal notes."
Coming back to this book, which gives a panoramic view into schools (sometimes, their promotional literature mentions 3,000 schools, others mention 2,000 schools, so I don't know which one is true & correct?) that have successfully used their core technology on a school-wide basis, there is even one case study from Singapore.
In this book as well as in the earlier two books, the author shares many stories from teachers, principals, & trainers who have adopted their 'Thinking Maps' to increase student achievement & revitalize learning communities.
In retrospect, the first book gives quite a good introduction to graphic organisers &/or visual tools, in addition to their own 'Thinking Maps' technology. Tactically, it explains in quite elaborate details WHAT visual tools are, WHY we should use them, and HOW to get the most out of these tools.
The second book follows up with more quantified evidence to support their core technology in addition to more practical applications as part of the educational curriculum.
I reckon, for a first timer/beginner into visual thinking, especially one looking for applications within an eduational setting, the three books are definitely worth exploring.
Readers should also read Nancy Margulies' Mapping Innerspace, which adopts a spontaneous, free-form approach to using visual tools.
Student Successes With Thinking Maps(R): School-Based Research, Results, and Models for Achievement Using Visual Tools OverviewQualitative and quantitative test results from researchers, curriculum authors, teachers, and administrators demonstrate why Thinking Maps® have increased student performance and teacher effectiveness.
