Calculus and Its Applications plus MyMathLab Student Starter Kit (9th Edition) ReviewI teach a high school Calculus class for kids who are capable/competent mathematicians, but not really interested in the AP level at an independent school. We like Marv Bittinger's books because they provide a nice balance of applications and connections without losing sight of the math. We continue to use this out-of-date book because it is more readable than most Calculus texts and strikes a nice balance between the rigor of the math and applications that help students to feel a connection to the ideas. The organization of the material is pretty good, although I often salt in the introduction of simple trigonometric functions throughout my instruction, rather than waiting until the end of the course, where it appears in the book. We have found that our students have a lot of fun with the problems about exponential growth and decay, particularly the application of the laws of cooling in solving murders. It seems a little odd to nearly finish differentiation before exploring logarithms and then have to go back and consider derivatives again, but I have gotten used to that. I bought this book for class, of course, but have found myself going back to my old undergraduate textbooks time and again for additional examples and explanation. The book is very vague on many areas, the examples are few and not very helpful. The SOLUTIONS MANUAL IS A JOKE and I would discourage you from buying it unless you feel it's absolutely necessary. Most chapters only have a few problems that are worked out in the solutions manual.

Academic Competitions for Gifted Students: A Resource Book for Teachers and Parents ReviewA better title for the book would be "Fun Competitions for Youth". This is NOT a book only for "Gifted Students"! While some of the competitions described are certainly for students who have a strong interest in a specific area most do not require that a student be "gifted" with a high IQ.
This book would be an excellent addition to any school library for use by teachers in all subject areas and should be borrowed from the local library by home school parents who want to add fun to their curriculum or parents of public school students who would like to offer their child an exciting opportunity. Most entries have a web address that the reader can go to for more information and applications.
Of the 170 "competitions" listed in the book 78 can be entered by a single student, or a group as small as three (about four competitions). The 78 competitions I identified did not include those that were only open to students of a specific race (four or five), those based on the knowledge of a foreign language (four or five) nor ones that most students would be prevented from participating in because of cost.
The opening chapter has a number of great ideas about how to empower youth to participate in these "competitions" without feeling that not "winning" is somehow "loosing".
I was pleased to find that a number of the competitions actually "awarded" a certificate or something like it to all students who entered. I would love it if every competition would send each participant a thank you letter telling them how great it is that they submitted an entry. Nothing is quite as exciting as knowing someone thinks you are great simply because you participate!Academic Competitions for Gifted Students: A Resource Book for Teachers and Parents OverviewThis useful resource contains criteria for selecting and implementing academic competitions for students of all ages. Holt Middle School Math Course 2, Grade 7 Student Textbook ReviewI use this book in school. It's not the most interesting subject, but it does work.
On the first few pages it shows that teachers really enjoy this book rather than Silver Burdett & Ginn or other math textbooks. It covers most of the 8th grade standards including:
-equations and inequalities
-graphing
-integers
-exponents and scientific notation
-rational numbers and operations
-real numbers
-collecting and describing data
-displaying data
-plane figures
-patterns in geometry
-perimeter and area
-3-d geometry
-ratios, rates, and proportions
-similarity and scale
-numbers and percents
-applying percents
-experimental probability
-theoretical probability and counting
-solving linear equations
-linear relationships
-sequences
-functions
There are twelve chapters in this book that put in two or three related standards and combining them in each chapter. Before every chapter is an Are U Ready? which has practice on the strategies needed in the chapter. There is also a "Focus on Problem Solving" which gives problem solving questions in standards already covered in the chapter (it's dead center in the chapter). There are also Mid-Chapter Quizzes which are halfway in the chapter to refresh peoples minds of earlier subjects. Also before every Chapter Test there is a Study Guide and Review which allows you to practice all of the standards before it's test time.
In the back of the book is a student handbook which has "Extra Practice" pages for all the lessons and a "Skills Bank" to practice techniques to finding answers. A "Selected Answers" is also there which shows all of the answers which means you should make sure your student has shown their work instead of copied all of the answers on their homework or classwork. Later, however, I found out in Independent Practice problems there are only the odd #d answers listed, so you might want to assign those for homework and/or classwork rather than the Guided Practice.
The book also has a website (which Amazon won't let me post) which has Homework Help and Test Taking Tips.
Overall it's a pretty good math book even though I dislike math.Holt Middle School Math Course 2, Grade 7 Student Textbook Overview

Really an introductory text, so you might need to consult the more advanced books of Wegge-Olsen, Blackadar after this one for more information on the subject. Nice place to start, especially if it is for self-study.An Introduction to K-Theory for C*-Algebras (London Mathematical Society Student Texts) OverviewOver the past twenty-five years K-theory has become an integrated part of the study of C*-algebras. This book gives a very elementary introduction to this interesting and rapidly growing area of mathematics. The authors cover the basic properties of the functors K and K1 and their interrelationship. In particular, the Bott periodicity theorem is proved (Atiyah's proof), and the six-term exact sequence is derived. The theory is well illustrated with 120 exercises and examples, making the book ideal for beginning graduate students in functional analysis, especially operator algebras, and for researchers from other areas of mathematics who want to learn about this subject.
