Corporate Finance + Student CD-ROM + Standard & Poor's card + Ethics in Finance PowerWeb (Irwin Series in Finance) ReviewThe nearly one thousand pages of this book abound with fine and contemporary information regarding corporate finance. Its chapters are not just well-arranged, but are also well-written. As a result of this, the financial gists they dish-out are very easy to grasp. I use this book as a dependable reference text (in conjuction with the "Encyclopedia of Finance" by Alice C. Lee and Cheng Few Lee). And, I must mention that I am quite satisfied with both books.
This "Corporate Finance" text did a good job in ramifying every aspect of finance. The coverage of its well-drafted chapters are elaborate, and include: financial management, portfolio management, auditing, research, investment analysis, security analysis, real estate finance, market finance, insurance, and many more. The book also gave detailed explanations on issues relating to capital asset pricing, option pricing model, and efficient market hypothesis.
This book is thorough; and uses several illustrative examples to teach its reader. All of its messages are straight to the point: no beating about the bush! Its in-depth analyses are superb. And, I am glad to recommend it to all corporate managers and executives, who associate themselves with any sort of financial dealings: whether it is about writing reports, making decisions, or supervising corporate projects.
This book comes with one learner's CD-ROM. It also comes with valuable Standard & Poor's card; as well as beneficial online web-links. It certainly worths every cent that I spent on it.Corporate Finance + Student CD-ROM + Standard & Poor's card + Ethics in Finance PowerWeb (Irwin Series in Finance) Overview
Corporate Finance is today's most authoritative book on—and covers every angle of—corporate finance. Updates tothis edition include a more user-friendly approach, new orupdated cases that illustrate top companies addressing real worldsituations, topical articles written by scholars andpractitioners, and more.

Macroeconomics plus MyEconLab plus eBook 1-semester Student Access Kit (6th Edition) ReviewThe book is good. It contains loads of historical charts, graphs and tables.
However although I can describe accurately I preferred the Mankiw book. I can't really say why, but I though Mankiw was an easier read. This does not mean that this book is bad, in fact it is quite good.

FINANCIAL BASICS: MONEY-MANAGEMENT GUIDE FOR STUDENTS ReviewI am a professional financial advisor and have had the opportunity to work with many clients in their 40's and beyond who haven't mastered the basics presented here by Knox. How I wish they had this book 20 years earlier to get them started on the right path - the time lost really hurts. The money management lessons are timeless, straightforward and essential for everyone, especially young adults striking out on their own. The writing is special - stories that help students relate (and make them want to keep reading). The lessons are doled out gently and casually, not more preaching. All-in-all, an excellent resource. I plan to give it to my clients' kids as they hit high school.FINANCIAL BASICS: MONEY-MANAGEMENT GUIDE FOR STUDENTS Overview

Principles of Managerial Finance, Brief & MyFinanceLab with Pearson eText Student Access Code Card Package (5th Edition) ReviewI am using this book in my certificate program class in finance and have found the book quite understandable. A lot of finance books get too much into the theory but this book is quite good at keeping it short and to the point without a lot of the random "finance" jargon. Corporate Finance: An Introduction plus MyFinanceLab Student Access Kit ReviewI really like this book. It offers an integrated approach to learning Corporate Finance, starting from simplified markets to really complex financial situations. Moreover, the author has an engaging writing Style.
Main strengths of the book:
Uncertainty, Default and Risk (==> Better done than other books. A clear distinction between Expected and Promised Cash Flows)
Capital Budgeting Applications and Pitfalls (The NPV Checklist) (==> Brilliant and useful)
From Financial Statements to Economic Cash Flows (==>A nice review of the Indirect Method approach to Cash Flows)
Pro Forma Financial Statements (==>Well done, although i would like to see a more consistent treatment of Financial Statements Forecasting for valuation purposes using the Direct Method)
Valuation from Comparables and Some Financial ratios (==> Better done than other books)
Capital Structure Dynamics and Capital Strcuture Patterns(==> The Empirical Evidence)
Epilogue (==>Insightful)
The greatest strenght of the book is the progression from the perfect market, LOP world to an imperfect market, constructing numerical examples in order to teach real problem solving.

Economics of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets plus MyEconLab Student Access Kit , The, Seventh Edition ReviewIf you're an independent learner; that is, not enrolled as a student in a course at a school, OR IF YOU ARE, BUT THE INSTRUCTOR IS NOT PARTICIPATING (Using the MyEconLab software for course materials), and thus can't provide you with a COURSEID, a warning about the MyEconLab study aid attachment to this textbook; the instructions for registering to use MyEconLab are less than candid.

They just say that without a CourseId you can still access "most of the online resources listed." You are directed to a generic Mishkin web site instead of registering at the main MyEconLab portal.
Being an honest person, I used the alternate registration. I was still asked for the ZIP for my school; I used my own. I then got a list of local schools or "Other" to choose from. I chose other, and entered "Independent Learner".
The registration then completed; the confirmation stated it is only good for SIX MONTHS.
If you go to the main MyEconLab Web portal shown in the user manual after registering as a non-student, your user ID will not be recognized. You have to use a generic portal for the Mishkin textbook instead.
What you get there is:
e-textbook, glossary, FLASH animated graphs, chapter quizzes and Web links from the textbook margins
The Weekly news selection (web links, so may expire; earliest was Aug. 2004)
The "Chapter Readings" in journals, etc. (ditto above)
Since these can expire at their parent web sites, I suggest you take the precaution of printing them out (I use Acrobat to make PDF files or download PDF files if available at the source). Also check out any links in the articles and do the same.
The Readings are probably the best of what you DO get, along with the animations and quizzes. The web links are updated, that's OK if you're not good at figuring that sort of thing out for yourself.
There is also a series of Chapter Appendices, not printed in the book, available with the e-text of the book at the alternate site.
WHAT YOU WON'T GET:
"Foundations Interactive" (whatever that is)
"MathXL for Econ" - the math review tutorial (would be nice)
"Research Navigator"
"eThemes of the Times"
The last two are a REAL Disappointment to me, because the Navigator (see textbook Preface) is supposed (among other things) to provide "a complete YEAR of search for full-text articles from the New York Times" and "Best of Web Link Library of peer-reviewed web sites." The last is described in the Preface as "thematically related articles from the NYTimes accompanied by critical-thinking questions." I was looking forward to these, because the NYTimes charges $$ by the article for archived (non-current) articles, and this can get expensive in a hurry, and an increasing number of other web sites, including industry association journals are now similarly archive and have paid access only.
So without being enrolled in a class that has an instructor who is using the course material software, you won't be able to access some of the BEST of the advertised materials of the MyEconLab add on.
They could have been clearer about WHAT exactly you would have had access to. They also could have said that the non-student registration is only good for 6 months, since the description of the NYTimes access for a full year (which you don't get at all) might reasonably lead one to infer that the registration is valid for a year.
And I fail to see why they couldn't throw in at least the Math review tutorial, since it wouldn't seem to involve any kind of outside contract or royalty such as the NYTimes access might.
Economics of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets plus MyEconLab Student Access Kit , The, Seventh Edition OverviewThis market-leading text provides the most authoritative, applications-rich coverage of key concepts, models, and issues in money and banking. Frederick Mishkin previously held the post of Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. His writing style, latest research, and discussion of policy issues keep his text at the forefront of money and banking.Every new student textbook comes with an access kit to MyEconLab for Mishkin, an online suite of student and instructor tools built around an online version of the entire textbook.

Personal Finance: Turning Money into Wealth with Student Workbook and MyFinanceLab with Pearson eText Student Access Code Card Package (5th Edition) ReviewPersonally, I think that we would all be better off if we spent more time in our education process teaching people about the realities of their economic lives. This is especially true of their choice of careers, managing those resources, and preparing for their "golden years". I could nominate a few topics I think we could cease teaching in order to have room for the necessary classes to provide people with real life financial management skills that can have a direct impact on the improvement of all aspects of their lives.
This book, "Personal Finance - Turning Money into Wealth" is a fantastic tool for students and ANY interested reader. I wish everyone would work through this book (or one very much like it). While it is never too late to develop these skills, the younger a person gets a plan for their economic life in place, the more power it has and the better off they will be long term.
I like the way Prof. Keown emphasizes basic principles (he has 15 of them) and planning. He begins the book by providing the foundation of financial planning, teaching the student how to measure their financial health and using that to inform their plan, understanding the Time Value of Money (a topic so vital that no one should graduate high school without knowing, in my opinion), and the basics of tax planning.
The author then provides some great information on managing money by understanding the realities of cash and liquid assets, credit cards (open credit) and the traps it represents, using consumer loans in PLANNED BORROWING (another important topic that is almost unknown to most consumers because of the misuse of open credit), and buying homes and automobiles.
I really enjoyed his next discussion on insurance. He talks about the various kinds of insurance, the kinds of protection they provide at what costs, and especially the situations in which buying insurance makes sense and when it does not.
The section on managing investments is good, solid, but BASIC information. Anyone doing anything beyond a few basic retirement plans will need to study other materials. This section is the one where I have a tiny quibble with the author. He differentiates investing and speculation by saying that investing involves putting money in assets that provide returns - stocks, bonds, etc - but that speculating is putting money in things like baseball cards that only have a price based on what others are willing to pay. I sort of understand what I think he is trying to say.
However, all investing is in some sense speculating. The buyer and seller have different views of the future (speculating about the future) and so they make opposite choices at a certain price. Either of them would change their view, presumably, at some other price. Stocks do not have a built in return and many do not pay dividends and too often nowadays their residual value is zero. Too often people buy stocks simply because they are going up (the greater fool theory) and get badly burned as we saw in the Internet Bubble collapse in early 2000. In any case, the caution the author advocates is sufficient and sound. I am just concerned that others use the terms "investment" and "speculation" differently than the author and might confuse those trying to enter the fray for the first time.
This fine text ends with a discussion of life cycle issues such as retirement planning, estate planning, and how all the pieces studied fit together into the grand plan.
The author also provides online helps such as problems, quizzes, and especially many useful spreadsheets that the student can not only use, but study to help them build their own that will be tailored to the student's specific situation. There is also a workbook with the basics of using a financial calculator and the worksheets called for in the text.
This is a superb text on a vital topic. Strongly Recommended for general readers as well as students in a class on this subject (which EVERY college student should be REQUIRED to take - or pass out of by test).Personal Finance: Turning Money into Wealth with Student Workbook and MyFinanceLab with Pearson eText Student Access Code Card Package (5th Edition) OverviewThis personal finance book introduces readers to the concepts, tools, and applications of personal finance and investments. It builds on the 15 Axioms of Personal Finance, and helps individuals develop an intuitive understanding not only of the financial planning process, but also the logic that drives it. In order to leave a lasting impression, this book concentrates on the fundamentals and underlying principles of personal finance, rather than focusing on equations and specific tools which are more easily forgotten.Chapter coverage includes how to prepare for the financial future and highlights some of the important decisions to be faced. The book covers pertinent topics that relate to getting a job and turning that job into a successful career. It also provides easy to follow advice from an expert CPA that can be used as a learning tool in such areas as purchasing a car, getting insurance, investing in mutual funds, etc.For anyone looking for a guide to personal finance and financial planning.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Options, Futures & Other Derivatives with Derivagem CD Value Package (includes Student Solutions Manual for Options, Futuresd Other Derivatives) (7th Edition) ReviewThis is the definitive introduction to derivatives. As evidence of its relevance, the following chapters are assigned to Financial Risk Manager (FRM) candidates: Hedging Strategies using Futures (Chapter 3), Determination of Forward and Futures Prices (5), Interest Rate Futures (6), Swaps (7), Properties of Stock Options (9), Trading Strategies Involving Options (10), Binomial Trees (11), Black-Scholes-Merton Model (13), Greeks (15), Volatility Smiles (16), Exotic Options (22).
Given that this is an expensive text, the most frequent question I get is, do I need to buy the latest edition? Perhaps you do not: the updates from fifth to sixth edition, and from sixth to seventh edition, have both been modest "version" upgrades. Here is a rule-of-thumb: the more introductory the topic (i.e., the earlier the chapter), the less likely you want/need the upgrade. The early chapters on futures, hedging, interest rate futures, swaps, and option pricing have barely changed since the fifth edition. Further, from what i can tell, the end-of-chapter questions are largely the same/similar.
In regard to the seventh, in addition to a number of refinements (e.g., some reorganization), the two noticeable differences are: a new chapter on valuation of employee stock option (a particular expertise of Hull's) and more material on certain credit derivatives (CDOs, credit default swap) including a bit more help on Gaussian copula. However, in regard to credit derivatives, in total, Hull gives a quick tour which may be challenging to the new learner. It is maybe not the best place to start for credit derivatives per se.
But, this is the gold standard, a work of art, as far as finance texts go. It may be an introduction but it offers encyclopedic breadth.
