Cost Management with Student CD ROM and Powerweb ReviewI originally bought this product for a class, but the instructor rarely used it because he didn't like it that much. I had a difficult time understanding what this book was communicating because it was written in such a way that it isn't very easy to understand.Cost Management with Student CD ROM and Powerweb OverviewThe Hilton/Maher/Selto text holds the more modern view that managers are active participants in cost minimization and control.Accountants are moving away from the traditional role of calculating and reporting results towards concentrating on the important tasks of timely analysis, interpretation, and communication of financial and related information.

Roads Taken: Women in Student Affairs at Mid-Career ReviewAs a mid-career woman myself, I found this book an excellent source of advice and real-world narratives about what life is like in student affairs. I went through many of the same things the women who wrote for this book did, in terms of deciding on graduate school, coping with a dual-career family, making decisions about children, and worrying about what was next for me professionally.
I recommend the book very highly for anyone who is struggling to find her (or his) way in the professional world of higher education administration and trying to balance work and family while staying moderately sane.
I've been talking about the book with colleagues and friends, and they agree that it's high time someone brought these issues into the open for all of us to wrestle with. I commend the authors and editors for this great resource.Roads Taken: Women in Student Affairs at Mid-Career OverviewThe work of student affairs professionals is demanding and unpredictable. This book addresses the particular challenges that it presents to women in mid-career.While much has been written about new graduate students, new professionals and senior administrators in student affairs, scant attention has been paid to the issues of mid-career, and particularly as they impact women. Here are the stories of over twenty women, from widely different backgrounds, reflecting on their lives at mid-career. They describe the choices they made and share the lessons they have learned, particularly the ever-present concerns about reconciling the demands of work and responsibilities to family and partners . The volume focuses on issues that have particular and significant meaning for women. The individual narratives are grouped into five sections, each beginning with a scholarly introduction to its topics. The sections deal with education and self development, such as the life implications of embarking on a doctorate; dual career couples and such decisions as relocation; choices about having children and responsibilities for the care of aging parents; arriving at mid-career; and alternatives to traditional, linear career progression in student affairs administration. This volume is a particular gift to women currently in mid-career positions in student affairs, women embarking on their personal and professional journey in student affairs, the partners of such women, their colleagues, and the individuals who supervise them.

Service Management: Operations, Strategy, Information Technology w/Student CD ReviewThe topic of operations management is ever associated with manufacturing and industry. But it is also applicated to the service industry nowadays, since most of the new corporations are selling services.
The book covers all the topics: how to plan, how to create the service, how to test and finally reinvent. All the issues are covered with many examples, very clear. The book also contains a CD (I haven't explored it yet!!)
Only two points to improve:
- the book is a first book on the topic. Not good if you are an incumbent.
- it doesn't give any innovation in the field.
And finally, too expensive!!!Service Management: Operations, Strategy, Information Technology w/Student CD OverviewBalancing conceptual and applied coverage of all aspects of the management and operation of services, Service Management has maintained the position as market leader through five previous editions. It is the most comprehensive and widely used introduction to service operations on the market, written by one of the top authorities on the subject, and it is designed to develop students' skills in both strategic and operational issues pertaining to services. New material on Professional Service Firms highlights IBM's initiative to establish a Service Science, Management, and Engineering discipline. The Sixth Edition also offers the latest information on Six-Sigma and RFID, as well as recent developments in other important industry topics.Text coverage spans both qualitative and quantitative aspects of service management and offers flexibility in courses, offering varying approaches to the study of service operations. The ancillary package includes student CD-ROM and Website that includes self-test quizzes, video clips, ServiceModel Software, and the Mortgage Service Game.

Fundamentals of Corporate Finance + Student CD + Standard & Poor's Educational Version of Market Insight ReviewThis book was recommended by my professor. It is very basic and informative. The most current edition of this book is the 6th edition. However, there are no major changes in the way the 5th edition is presented other than the fact that the 5th edition's chapter 17 is the chapter 4 of the new edition and chapter 4 becomes chapter 5 of the new edition, pushing all other chapters up by one. Get this book instead of the 6th edition and save money to increase value.Fundamentals of Corporate Finance + Student CD + Standard & Poor's Educational Version of Market Insight OverviewFundamentals of Corporate Finance, by Richard A. Brealey, Stewart C. Myers and Alan J. Marcus, has been applauded for its modern approach and interesting examples. Professors praise the authors' well-organized and thoughtful writing style and their clear exposition of what many students consider difficult material. The authors accomplish this without sacrificing an up-to-date, technically correct treatment of core topic areas. Since this author team is known for their outstanding research, teaching efforts, and market-leading finance textbooks, it's no surprise that they have created an innovative, and market-driven revision that is more student friendly than ever.Every chapter has been reviewed and revised to reflect the current environment in corporate finance.

Authoritas: One Student's Harvard Admissions and the Founding of the Facebook Era ReviewThis book is odd. It's well written and the narrative is compelling; enough for me to read it all in one go.
The stories of inadequate ego-driven teachers and students early on in the book are relayed well. The book's exposure of incompetence, back-scratching and favoritism from supposedly upstanding academic leaders is excellent. This is a good reason to read this book, and for excellently depicting an often overlooked part of academic life, this book deserves 4 stars.
The problem is, that's not why I bought the book. I was expecting a book about the "founding of the Facebook era" as the sub-title suggests. This is certainly not a focus. From 335 pages in all, the name "Mark Zuckerberg" first appears on page 287, and any facts relating to Facebook's rise are within only the last 40 pages and are mostly tainted by disdain.
Initially the author developed a system called CriticalMass that allowed students to rate their satisfaction of different academics at Harvard. Textbook Central, a textbook trading site, followed. Another system called FAStWebmail allowed Harvard students to access their official Harvard e-mail accounts over the Web. These were eventually rolled into a system called houseSYSTEM that included some other features like course preselection and calendars.
For a few chapters after explaining how these systems were developed, the focus is on how the administration and some other students considered houseSYSTEM to be insecure and flawed, due to its pseudo-requirement to have users' official Harvard passwords (in order for the webmail function to work) and a lack of proper SSL (HTTPS) security.
In dealing with these concerns the author showed a lack of technical knowledge. He protested that only an MD-5 hash of users' passwords were stored, but if this were the case, how did his system then access the users' official e-mail accounts? The author doesn't provide a proper level of detail to make a judgment as an independent reader, and the way he portrays it may just be poor.
The author also says "Brian Wong is telling people that MD-5 generates 16-byte hashes, when it doesn't! There are 32 characters in all of them! Each ASCII character is one byte!" MD-5 generates a 16 byte hash (128 bits). That a textual hexadecimal representation of that 16 byte hash takes 32 characters does not make it a "32 byte hash."
The author has a habit of "quoting" his mental monologue, nearly all of which is negative in nature, and assuming whoever he's talking to is either an idiot or out to get him. The author's paranoia (warranted or not) permeates the last half of this book enough to make for uneasy reading. He jumps to exaggerated conclusions. Shortly after the initial security concerns, the university decides that Greenspan needs to delete the password hashes he had collected so far and "forward the list of all those whose information you have collected" in order that those students could have their passwords reset. Instead of complying with this reasonable request, the author rants about how the users table has other information like phone numbers in it and asks "What, do they want those, too?" The e-mail he quotes requested a list of people who signed up for his site, not other details. This doesn't stop the author from eventually sending the whole user table anyway!
On the SSL issue, the text implies that a self-signed certificate was used, but the author appears not to understand the identification issues with this (though those who e-mail him appear to). It's a common theme that the author, IMHO, quotes well-thought-out e-mails and refutes them poorly. He argues that a wildcard certificate would be necessary - costing some $1000, though InstantSSL had them for under $500 at the time - not realizing he could use a regular SSL certificate (under $50) for the password transfer (the parts where security really counted), and a wildcard cookie for cross sub-domain authentication beyond that.
On Facebook, he seems to feel that Zuckerberg's developments, though independent, were a rip off of his own even though Zuckerberg is constantly quoted as remaining separate. houseSYSTEM did have a "face book" feature where pictures of students were located along with their names, but this had no social networking aspect. Zuckerberg's did. Nothing the author relays gives me the impression he "founded" the "Facebook" era.
On page 302, I feel that Greenspan relays a tale of attempting to blackmail Facebook. Despite considering Zuckerburg "inarticulate and naive," he suggested that he join Facebook. When told they needed an engineer with 15 years' experience, Greenspan highlighted Facebook's problems with ConnectU (who were suing Facebook for allegedly copying their idea and stealing code) and suggested that he had "grounds to sue both of you" before suggesting that if Facebook would hire him, he'd be on their side and help the lawsuit go away.
The last 20 pages are dire. The author claims that having a full Facebook profile "would have meant I endorsed intellectual property theft" without realizing that information willingly shared is not "thieved."
Lastly, the author appears to rub most people in the book up the wrong way. Other than his closest associates and his family, almost every social interaction seems to result in the author antagonizing someone or being ignored. In many cases, he relies on his father to write e-mails and letters on his behalf (mostly unsuccessfully), rather than fight his own battles. "If Mark can get $2 billion for my ideas, I should at least be able to get a couple million!" sums up what I see as a jealous individual who, as it happens, has written a gripping and interesting book.
As good as this book is, I sense Greenspan isn't the sort of person to get over a slight easily and it saddens me that he appears restricted him from achieving all that someone with his talents could be.Authoritas: One Student's Harvard Admissions and the Founding of the Facebook Era OverviewAaron Greenspan was just like any other recent Harvard graduate until the day he read that his invention, a web site called The Facebook, was worth billions of dollars and someone else was taking the credit. Trying to find the rationale behind an unbelievable tale of ingenuity, triumph and betrayal, Greenspan sat down to write his story, and emerged with a book that follows a boy and his autistic brother from public school to the hyper-competitive college admissions process to the gates of Harvard Yard and beyond. A true story that sheds light on the American educational system, the immense challenges of coping with autism, and of course, the astronomical growth of The Facebook, Authoritas is an engrossing account of life that any student, parent, teacher or entrepreneur will relate to.

Managerial Accounting: Creating Value in a Dynamic Business Environment w/Student Success CD-ROM, Net Tutor & Powerweb package ReviewI am teaching Management Accounting to the students of MBA and professional bodies for the last 21 years and have critically studied some of the best available text books on the subject. This book is very well written and covers the major topics. It is an outstanding book particularly for beginners and MBA students for a one semister course. The author has proovided good illustrations and a variety of exercises and problems at the end of chapter. However those who wish to specialise in Managerial Accounting need additional readings. I adopted this book for MBA students since its 1st edition was published. At present I have adopted the 5th edition which has been revised in line with the changing environment. Majority of the students have very much appreciated this book because it is easy to understand. I have observed that some students of professional bodies are also referring to this book for reference purpose.
This review pertains to the 5th International edition.Managerial Accounting: Creating Value in a Dynamic Business Environment w/Student Success CD-ROM, Net Tutor & Powerweb package OverviewThe emphasis of MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING, 5e is on teaching students to use accounting information to best manage an organization. In a practice Hilton pioneered in the first edition, each chapter is written around a realistic business or focus company that guides the reader through the topics of that chapter. Known for balanced examples of Service, Retail, Nonprofit and Manufacturing companies, Hilton offers a clear, engaging writing style that has been praised by instructors and students alike. As in previous editions, there is significant coverage of contemporary topics such as activity-based costing, target costing, the value chain, customer profitability analysis, and throughput costing while also including traditional topics such as job-order costing, budgeting and performance evaluation.

Basic Statistics for Business and Economics with Student CD ReviewI had to get this book for a graduate level class. This is a well written book. I am coming to the conclusion that a text book needs to be in color to emphasize content or examples. This is very helpful in this book which is math laden. You will only need to know basic algebra (if that) for this material. Some higher math may help you. There are a lot of examples that show how to use the formulas. Much of which is "plug & chug" to get an answer. The concepts are well explained and there are good real-world examples. There are plenty of solutions in the back of the book. The examples also include graphs to show how the data sets are presented. There are plenty of reference tables for t, f, z and chi values. The CD that came with mine has a stat analysis add-on for Excel. It was called Megastat. I liked it better than the Excel data analysis tool. The CD had a lot of data sets to play with as well. If you can put information into a spreadsheet, you can use this book to help build an understanding of the analysis output. This is a good foundation book for statistical analysis.Basic Statistics for Business and Economics with Student CD OverviewLind/Marchal/Wathen: Basic Statistics for Business and Economics, Sixth edition is a derivative of the best-selling Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics, offering the essential topics of statistical tools and methods delivered in a student friendly, step-by-step format. The text is non-threatening and presents concepts clearly and succinctly with a conversational writing style. All statistical concepts are illustrated with solved applied examples immediately upon introduction. Modern computing tools and applications are introduced, but the text maintains a focus on presenting statistics content as opposed to technology or programming methods, and the sixth edition continues as a "students" text with increased emphasis on interpretation of data and results.

Needs Assessment in Public Health:: A Practical Guide for Students and Professionals Review"Given the dual purpose of this book as a textbook for students and a handbook for professionals, the chapters follow the typical sequence of an actual needs-assessment process: Case studies are used to illustrate conceptualization of the task, followed by the application of needs-based data, which is followed by the creation of effective public health solutions."
excerpt from review from Administration & Policy in Mental Health, KAP vol. 30 Issue 6, page 554 July 2003Needs Assessment in Public Health:: A Practical Guide for Students and Professionals OverviewThis volume is for students and practitioners interested in improving their understanding and skills in the area of needs assessment. The text follows the typical sequence of an actual needs assessment process. Case studies are used to illustrate conceptualization of the task through the application of needs-based data to effective public health solutions. Examples are drawn from myriad public health efforts, recognizing that not all public health sector agencies bear direct responsibility for all activities that could be considered part of public health.

Basic Marketing w/Student CD ReviewI needed this book for my Marketing class at CSUDH. It's a good book, but I really feel it could be half as long as it is and still be useful. It tries to offer a lot of information, and it does, but it also winds up repeating a lot of the same concepts over and over. Shorter would be better. And of course, cheaper would be great!Basic Marketing w/Student CD OverviewBasic Marketing 16e builds on the foundation pillars of previous editions the four Ps framework, managerial orientation, and strategy planning focus. 16e builds upon its pioneering beginnings that introduced the four Ps to the introductory marketing course. The unifying focus of Basic Marketing has always been on how to make the marketing decisions that a manager must make in deciding what customers to focus on and how best to meet their needs. Over many editions there has been constant change in marketing management and the marketing environment. Some of the changes have been dramatic, and others have been subtle. As a result, the authors have made ongoing changes to the text to reflect marketings best practices and ideas. Throughout all of these changes, Basic Marketing and the supporting materials that accompany it have been more widely used than any other teaching materials for introductory marketing. Consistent with our belief in continuous quality improvement, this edition has been critically revised, updated, and rewritten to reflect new concepts, new examples, and recent best practices. This edition extends the strategy planning approach, integrating concepts tightly with the marketing strategy planning model.

Personal Finance: Turning Money into Wealth with Student Workbook and MyFinanceLab with Pearson eText Student Access Code Card Package (5th Edition) ReviewPersonally, I think that we would all be better off if we spent more time in our education process teaching people about the realities of their economic lives. This is especially true of their choice of careers, managing those resources, and preparing for their "golden years". I could nominate a few topics I think we could cease teaching in order to have room for the necessary classes to provide people with real life financial management skills that can have a direct impact on the improvement of all aspects of their lives.
This book, "Personal Finance - Turning Money into Wealth" is a fantastic tool for students and ANY interested reader. I wish everyone would work through this book (or one very much like it). While it is never too late to develop these skills, the younger a person gets a plan for their economic life in place, the more power it has and the better off they will be long term.
I like the way Prof. Keown emphasizes basic principles (he has 15 of them) and planning. He begins the book by providing the foundation of financial planning, teaching the student how to measure their financial health and using that to inform their plan, understanding the Time Value of Money (a topic so vital that no one should graduate high school without knowing, in my opinion), and the basics of tax planning.
The author then provides some great information on managing money by understanding the realities of cash and liquid assets, credit cards (open credit) and the traps it represents, using consumer loans in PLANNED BORROWING (another important topic that is almost unknown to most consumers because of the misuse of open credit), and buying homes and automobiles.
I really enjoyed his next discussion on insurance. He talks about the various kinds of insurance, the kinds of protection they provide at what costs, and especially the situations in which buying insurance makes sense and when it does not.
The section on managing investments is good, solid, but BASIC information. Anyone doing anything beyond a few basic retirement plans will need to study other materials. This section is the one where I have a tiny quibble with the author. He differentiates investing and speculation by saying that investing involves putting money in assets that provide returns - stocks, bonds, etc - but that speculating is putting money in things like baseball cards that only have a price based on what others are willing to pay. I sort of understand what I think he is trying to say.
However, all investing is in some sense speculating. The buyer and seller have different views of the future (speculating about the future) and so they make opposite choices at a certain price. Either of them would change their view, presumably, at some other price. Stocks do not have a built in return and many do not pay dividends and too often nowadays their residual value is zero. Too often people buy stocks simply because they are going up (the greater fool theory) and get badly burned as we saw in the Internet Bubble collapse in early 2000. In any case, the caution the author advocates is sufficient and sound. I am just concerned that others use the terms "investment" and "speculation" differently than the author and might confuse those trying to enter the fray for the first time.
This fine text ends with a discussion of life cycle issues such as retirement planning, estate planning, and how all the pieces studied fit together into the grand plan.
