Cambridge Latin Course Unit 2 Student's book North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) ReviewThis series almost entirely bases its learning technique around translations, introducing new grammar concepts as they appear in the readings. This is a very different approach from most languages, but for teaching Latin, it is a very effective one. If you are getting back into Latin and familiar with the rudimentary concepts I would recommend starting with book 2. For beginners, book 1 is a must- I promise it's worth it. It's fun to read and easy to follow along with. I am looking forward to learning from book 4 in this series.Cambridge Latin Course Unit 2 Student's book North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) OverviewThe Cambridge Latin Course is a well-established introductory program in four Units, originally developed by the Cambridge School Classics Project.Under the sponsorship of the North American Cambridge Classics Project, Unit 2 now has been fully revised and adapted for use in the United States and Canada. This proven approach includes a stimulating, continuous storylin, grammatical development and cultural information carefully woven throughout the text, a complete Language Information section--now bound into the students' volume--and, for the first time, color photographs that illustrate the Roman world.also available are a thorough Teacher's Manual, a workbook, and cassette tapes. The Third Edition is wholly compatible with the existing Second Edition.

Vis-a-vis: Beginning French (Student Edition) ReviewThe setup of this textbook is pretty standard for college-level language books. An added bonus would be that the page numbers are spelled out in French next to the numerals (giving the student extra practice on pronouncing numbers).
The language used in the text is clear and simple and, if the student is really determined to learn French, they can do it with this text (or, at the very least, get a working knowledge of the language). You can also get glimpses of French culture from the snippets throughout the book.
The accompanying workbook/lab manual is very helpful in strengthening your knowledge and usage of French through extra exercises and is a must have with this textbook.
Very good course. - Donna Di GiacomoVis-a-vis: Beginning French (Student Edition) OverviewThe third edition of "Vis-a-vis" continues the excitement of the innovative second edition with a fully integrated and revised multimedia package and updated cultural information presented in the ""Correspondance"" feature (chapter opening letter, postcard, or e-mail, which is answered in the mid-lesson "Correspondance" cultural spread), and in the new "Bienvenue dans le monde francophone" feature that recurs after every four chapters in the text. The overall goal of the revision remains the same as that of the second edition: to promote a balanced four-skills approach to learning French through a wide variety of listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities, while introducing students to the richness and diversity of the Francophone world.

Cambridge Latin Course Unit 4 Student Text North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) ReviewI found this series, the 4th edition, to be especially informative because of the inclusion of history and culture of the time period, in English, as well as colour photographs.
As for the format of the book, I found it to be an easy read. Almost every stage begins with line drawings ("cartoons"), which introduces grammar, characters and sets the "stage" for what is to follow. Then there are a number of stories in each stage; proved for fun group quiz games (EUGE!). At the end of each story new vocabulary is included. Also there are vocabulary checklists, which you should know, at the end of the stage. Sometimes, the vocabulary at the end of the stories appears in the checklists further along in book. If this becomes a problem, my suggestion would be to make flashcards for each of the stages (proven study aid).
I do think that an improvement to later editions would be to include an English-Latin dictionary of the words used within the book, as well as pronunciation. Yet, nothing that an external English-Latin = Latin-English dictionary could not handle.
Valete!Cambridge Latin Course Unit 4 Student Text North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) OverviewThe North American Cambridge Latin Course is a well-established four-part Latin program whose approach combines a stimulating, continuous storyline with grammatical development, work on derivatives, and cultural information. There is also a complete Language Information section, plus numerous color photographs illustrating life in the Roman world. The Course has now been fully revised and updated in the light of feedback from user schools, and includes the very best in new research. The Fourth Edition continues to offer teachers and students alike a stimulating, reading- based approach to the study of Latin.

Cambridge Latin Course Unit 3 Student's book North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) ReviewHi, I am taking Latin. I took it in eighth grade and found the adventures of Caecilius and Grumio and Metella and Clemens and Quintus, (book 1), and the further adventures of Quintus and Clemens along with Barbillus and Petro and the astrologer (book 2) very, very amusing and interesting. I was sad to find out my highschool did not carry on the series. So I took it upon my self to continue my education. I assure you, all Latin speakers/readers should read these books, no matter what.Cambridge Latin Course Unit 3 Student's book North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) OverviewKeep the excitement of learning going. . . .Unit 3 and Unit 4 of the Third Edition of the Cambridge Latin Course continue the stimulating, historically accurate story line of Units 1 and 2.They are wholly compatible with the new Fourth Edition Units 1 and 2 and include:full color illustrations of Roman ruins and artifacts that bring the ancient world to lifeWord Search study sections that help prepare students for standardized language testsTeacher's Manuals, Workbooks, Cassettes, Tests and Examinations

¡Arriba: Comunicación y cultura Student Edition (5th Edition) ReviewThis book is expensive and practically useless for self study, but a required text at my university-- and if you are reading this, then it is assumable that you are in the same situation and you're about to have to suck a mighty sour lemon. I am sorry to tell you that this book along with the workbook, which you will have to purchase separately if your school requires this text (for an additional $56 at the time of this review), are a big waste of money.
It is disorganized in it's approach and introduction to the language, the pertinent information is skimmed over, and some of the lessons presented are written in an ambiguous and confusing manner. For example, there are many short articles written in Spanish throughout the text which lack translation, which is a pain, but to top it off, some of the words used aren't in the glossary either.
Admittedly, the book is attractive, with many beautiful photographs and cute illustrations dealing with cultural aspects, but IMO, it is a substandard learning tool considering the hefty price tag. The publisher must make back-room deals to get colleges to require this text, forcing students to buy it. And if the student(s) receive Pell Grants or other financial aid, the taxpayer is actually buying it.
Unfortunately, you can't really get away with buying this textbook used because of the accompanying MySpanishLab (but you can save some money by buying the workbook used). The professors usually utilize the online MySpanishLab to assign homework and the new books come with a product key that is required for access-- but for one user only. The exception being that if you happen to be able to take your Spanish courses during the summer sessions. As of now, the publisher has not set up templates for the MySpanishLab for the 3 week summer classes, so you won't need the key. But this may soon change.
However, to be fair, this book may not such a bad deal for a college class because it is used for Spanish 1 and 2, so you don't have to buy another text for the 2nd class. Still, it is a disappointment because it is not worth keeping after completing the course work for a future reference, nor does it have resale value because of the need to buy it new to get the key to access the lab.
The "Practice Makes Perfect" series by Dorthy Richmond and "Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish" are far superior to "Arriba!" for learning, and much more affordable. I wish my university taught from them. Since they are great for self study, I can only imagine the superior learning experience I would have had if these books were the ones used for my classes. Fortunately, I had a fabulous professor and she compensated for this book's inadequecies.¡Arriba: Comunicación y cultura Student Edition (5th Edition) OverviewWake up to the new, 5th edition of ¡Arriba!
