Cambridge Latin Course Unit 2 Student's book North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) ReviewThis series almost entirely bases its learning technique around translations, introducing new grammar concepts as they appear in the readings. This is a very different approach from most languages, but for teaching Latin, it is a very effective one. If you are getting back into Latin and familiar with the rudimentary concepts I would recommend starting with book 2. For beginners, book 1 is a must- I promise it's worth it. It's fun to read and easy to follow along with. I am looking forward to learning from book 4 in this series.Cambridge Latin Course Unit 2 Student's book North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) OverviewThe Cambridge Latin Course is a well-established introductory program in four Units, originally developed by the Cambridge School Classics Project.Under the sponsorship of the North American Cambridge Classics Project, Unit 2 now has been fully revised and adapted for use in the United States and Canada. This proven approach includes a stimulating, continuous storylin, grammatical development and cultural information carefully woven throughout the text, a complete Language Information section--now bound into the students' volume--and, for the first time, color photographs that illustrate the Roman world.also available are a thorough Teacher's Manual, a workbook, and cassette tapes. The Third Edition is wholly compatible with the existing Second Edition.

Latin for Americans Level 1 Student Edition ReviewThis textbook does an excellent job of explaining Latin. It teaches vocabulary, grammar, culture, etc. The pictures in the book are excellent. It is an easy to understand textbook. It is the best Latin textbook on the market today. I took Latin thirty years ago (1970-1973) and Using Latin books 1, 2 and 3 by Annabel Horn, John Flagg Gummere and Margaret Forbes were the textbooks used in my classes. These books were published by Scott Foresman and Company and went out of print when the authors died. They were last published in 1961 (Book 1), 1963(Book 2) and 1968 (Book 3). These were very good books also but Latin for Americans is very similar in content to the Using Latin textbooks.. My son who took Latin two years ago in high school used Latin for Americans by B L Ullman, Charles Henderson and Norman E. Henry and he benefited very much from the textbooks. I purchased all three of these books because they are the best. Latin for Americans was originally published in 1941 and the latest edition which is the 9th edition was published in 2003. These are GREAT books!Latin for Americans Level 1 Student Edition OverviewThis text introduces students to Latin with a carefully paced and logical presentation.Vocabulary, derivatives, and grammar are explained clearly and reinforced with group and paired activities and practice assessments.Culture is brought to life with colorful photos and the Glimpses of Roman Life feature.

Latin for Americans Level 2 Student Edition ReviewLatin for Americans by B L Ullman and Charles Henderson is the best Latin textbook series on the market today. I purchased all three books. It is available as Level 1, 2 and 3. It has vocabulary, Roman culture, grammar, exercises, a Latin paragraph to read and translate and excellent pictures in every chapter of the book. The books also have a workbook for Level 1 and 2. These books were first printed in 1941 and the most recent copyright is 2003/2004 which is the 9th edition. The workbooks reinforce the material that is in the textbooks. These textbooks are easy to read and understand. These textbooks are used in most high school Latin classes. Some colleges may also use these books. I rate these books as number 1 with an A plus!Latin for Americans Level 2 Student Edition OverviewLevel 2 continues to build the strong foundation of grammar, vocabulary, culture, and reading that students develop in Latin for Americans, Level 1.Students are introduced to Latin literature in Latin for Americans, Level 2.

The Student's Catullus (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture) ReviewLearned, exciting and accessible, Garrison's edition of Catullus is the best in over a century (since Elmer Merrill's Carmina in 1893). Garrison has decided not to obstruct a classic's own text, instead allowing Gaius Valerius Catullus to speak for himself--yet offering grammatical advice, relevant historical and political information, and commentary only when absolutely needed. Thanks, Daniel! I'll be keeping my edition for a long time. Here the text and the Poet are given the highest consideration.
Even a Latin scholar who's had the opportunity to take only 100 level classes will be able to read and enjoy all 116 poems--and that's important.
But remember--there's nothing wrong reading Catullus, or any Roman author, in translation. Some translations of Catullus are a little dense for first-timers, but Goold and Cornish's are really good. The Student's Catullus (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture) OverviewThough his audacious erotic and satrical verses survived the Middle Ages in only a single copy, Catullus has become in this century a standard author in the college Latin curriculum, ranking with Virgil, Horace, and Ovid. This new, annotated Latin edition now makes these famous poems more accessible than ever to students of Catullus' own language. The Student's Catullus places its emphasis on understanding the original Latin text rather than merely translating it into English. A complete Latin-English vocabulary explains the meaning of Catullus' words; notes to each poem illuminate the meaning of his language, with explanations of word choice, word order, sound effects, and metric artistry. Historical and literary allusions are also explained, with the result that students enter deeper into the poet's world than the best English translation can suggest. The Student's Catullus makes it clear why we still read Catullus in Latin.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Cambridge Latin Course Unit 4 Student Text North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) ReviewI found this series, the 4th edition, to be especially informative because of the inclusion of history and culture of the time period, in English, as well as colour photographs.
As for the format of the book, I found it to be an easy read. Almost every stage begins with line drawings ("cartoons"), which introduces grammar, characters and sets the "stage" for what is to follow. Then there are a number of stories in each stage; proved for fun group quiz games (EUGE!). At the end of each story new vocabulary is included. Also there are vocabulary checklists, which you should know, at the end of the stage. Sometimes, the vocabulary at the end of the stories appears in the checklists further along in book. If this becomes a problem, my suggestion would be to make flashcards for each of the stages (proven study aid).
I do think that an improvement to later editions would be to include an English-Latin dictionary of the words used within the book, as well as pronunciation. Yet, nothing that an external English-Latin = Latin-English dictionary could not handle.
Valete!Cambridge Latin Course Unit 4 Student Text North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) OverviewThe North American Cambridge Latin Course is a well-established four-part Latin program whose approach combines a stimulating, continuous storyline with grammatical development, work on derivatives, and cultural information. There is also a complete Language Information section, plus numerous color photographs illustrating life in the Roman world. The Course has now been fully revised and updated in the light of feedback from user schools, and includes the very best in new research. The Fourth Edition continues to offer teachers and students alike a stimulating, reading- based approach to the study of Latin.

Cambridge Latin Course Unit 1 Student's Text North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) ReviewI took a look through the 20 or so Latin books and dictionaries at my locals B&N book store. This one seems by far the strongest candidate for self-study (my intended use) - combining
a fairly attractive visual presentation with some interesting and easy-to-digest history/background information. Actually this is the only book I saw that I would consider buying. [I am thinking of learning a little Latin with my son, for fun and general education.]Cambridge Latin Course Unit 1 Student's Text North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) OverviewThe Fourth Edition Cambridge Latin Course is an introductory program organized into four well-integrated units.Cambridge's proven approach includes a stimulating continuous story line, interwoven grammatical development and cultural information, supportive illustrations and photographs, and a complete Language Information section.Reading is the heart of the Cambridge Latin Course, and all the elements of the program - illustrations, vocabulary, grammar and syntax, cultural contexts and references, activities - are carefully introduced and arranged to provide students with the skills they need to read with comprehension and enjoyment from the very first page.

Latin for the New Millennium: Student Text (Latin Edition) ReviewIf you are attempting to teach yourself Latin, I HIGHLY recommend this book. I've gone through Wheelock,Jenney, Gummer and Henle and I think this and Henle are the best. Henle has the advantage overall because you can get texts with all exercise answers for Latin I-IV. For just a first year learning experience, however, this New Millenium text is the best especially if you buy the teacher's edition to get answers for all the exercises. This is a great addition to the field. This book has great graphics and does a nice job of integrating Roman history and culture. It uses some of Wheelock's techniques in introducing readers to real Latin prose early. It does not attempt to cover as much ground as quickly as Wheelock does but I view that as a positive. I'm looking forward to buying the second year New Millenium text.Latin for the New Millennium: Student Text (Latin Edition) OverviewLatin For The New Millennium SeriesThis new two-year comprehensive introductory Latin series is designed with both high school and college students in mind. The curriculum is complete with student texts, student workbooks, teacher's manuals, ancillaries on Roman history and mythology, and complemented by a website, test bank and generator, and student internet activities.Written by world-renowned Latinists, Milena Minkova and Terence Tunberg, and drawing on the authors specialty, this series features an oral activity in each chapter. Under the supervision of Editors LeaAnn Osburn and Elisa Denja, Latin for the New Millennium has been carefully vetted by seasoned teachers and a team of teachers who piloted the curriculum. The fusion approach to Latin is built into both levels, combining the best practices of the reading method and the traditional grammar approach with a cumulative vocabulary foundation that will ensure a smooth transition to upper-level literature courses. Each chapter presents vocabulary found in the works of ancient Latin authors studied in both college and Advanced Placement courses. Exercises designed for oral use accompany a set of plentiful traditional exercises in each chapter. The Latin readings drawn from original Latin works span the ages from early Rome through the medieval and Renaissance periods, demonstrating the vitality and universality of the Latin literary tradition. The readings, illustrations, and inserts on Roman literature, history, mythology, and daily life seamlessly present the connection between the Latin language and its culture. Essays written by university scholars probe the connections between Roman culture and the modern world. To promote an enriched English vocabulary, each chapter features sections on derivatives, the influence of Latin vocabulary on English, and selected proverbs or common Latin sayings. The Latin for the New Millennium website will feature a student section, a teachers-only section, the Teachers Lounge for sharing materials, networking with other teachers, posting student work, accessing a test generator. Also available:Latin for the New Millennium: Student Workbook - ISBN 0865165610From Romulus to Romulus Augustulus: Roman History for the New Millennium - ISBN 0865166919For over 30 years Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers has produced the highest quality Latin and ancient Greek books. Cambridge Latin Course Unit 2 Student Text North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) ReviewI used these books in high school a few years back. Now I've picked them up to learn Latin on my own. Unfortunately I need a second language for my Masters, and my college didn't offer Latin.
The first book jumps you right into the lessons. Most books I've found, force grammer and pronounciation through the first few chapters.
People put down Latin and are afraid to learn it, saying it is hard. Considering the romantic languages and much of English come from Latin, it's a lot easier than people think. Just use common sense and you can learn to pick out words. I gave a few passages to my Latin-free husband and he got the idea of some of the sentences. It took a bit of figuring, but anyone should be able to do it.
The only negative, is using this book alone. It helps to have someone to ask questions of. At least when you get into the conjegating of verbs and their declensions. If you can find someone to ask a few questions of, then you're all set.Cambridge Latin Course Unit 2 Student Text North American edition (North American Cambridge Latin Course) OverviewThe Fourth Edition Cambridge Latin Course is an introductory program organized into four well-integrated units.
