Statistics Explained: A Guide for Social Science Students, 2nd Edition ReviewThe only topics missing from this book that I wish had been discussed are validity (concurrent, longitudinal predictive, diagnostic) and item analysis (difficulty and discrimination indexes). A few pages are devoted to reliability, but I would have liked to see more detailed discussion devoted to the differences between the types of reliability measurement (test-retest, split halves, and parallel forms reliability).
These minor points aside, this book is a wonderfully readable and not at all intimidating introduction to statistics. Highly recommended!Statistics Explained: A Guide for Social Science Students, 2nd Edition OverviewStatistics Explained clearly outlines the major statistical tests used by undergraduates in the social sciences. It provides easy-to-understand explanations of how and why they are used and makes statistics much less mysterious. This book:Is a simple introduction to the jargonShows you when to be sceptical about statisticsGuides you in using computers in statistical analysis. Statistics Explained can be dipped into so that readers can see why a specific analytical procedure was developed and what it is best used for. Readers can also analyse their own data by following the worked examples provided. People who understand statistics are not unusual. Anyone can do it. In this book, Perry Hinton shows that statistics can be a logical and helpful tool to all of us in deciding answers to our research questions. Statistics Explained will be warmly welcomed by students at all levels, and by the lecturers who struggle to teach them.

Elementary Statistics Using Excel plus MyStatLab Student Access Kit (4th Edition) ReviewTriola contines a successful series in this third edition of statistics using Excel. Like the other two books, which differ only slightly from the newest edition, the author uses somewhat complex, sometimes confusing examples to illustrate basic statistical precepts.
My biggest complaint about this text is its tendency to get too advanced, too quickly. This text is excellent for a two-semester class.Elementary Statistics Using Excel plus MyStatLab Student Access Kit (4th Edition) OverviewKEY BENEFIT: Elementary Statistics Using Excel, Fourth Edition, offers a complete introduction to basic statistics, featuring extensive instruction on the use of Excel spreadsheets for data analysis. Extensive Excel® instructions are provided along with typical displays of results, as well as information about Excel's limitations and alternative approaches to problem-solving. Real data in many examples help readers see the prevalence of statistics in the real world. KEY TOPICS: Introduction to Statistics; Summarizing and Graphing Data; Statistics for Describing, Exploring, and Comparing Data; Probability; Probability Distributions; Normal Probability Distributions; Estimates and Sample Sizes; Hypothesis Testing; Inferences from Two Samples; Correlation and Regression; Multinomial Experiments and Contingency Tables; Analysis of Variance; Nonparametric Statistics; Statistical Process Control; Projects, Procedures, PerspectivesMARKET: for all readers interested in statistics

The Basic Practice of Statistics: w/Student CD ReviewHave to have this text for an online college statistics course I am taking. Text is well written. It presents the concepts in a clear and through fashion making it easy to learn the material. Would recommend it even if you are not taking a course and just wanted to teach yourself a basic grasp of statistics. With this text you can do it.The Basic Practice of Statistics: w/Student CD OverviewThe Basic Practice of Statistics has become a bestselling textbook by focusing on how statistics are gathered, analyzed, and applied to real problems and situations—and by confronting student anxieties about the course's relevance and difficulties head on. With David Moore's pioneering "data analysis" approach (emphasizing statistical thinking over computation), engaging narrative and case studies, current problems and exercises, and an accessible level of mathematics, there is no more effective textbook for showing students what working statisticians do and what accurate interpretations of data can reveal about the world we live in. In the new edition, you will once again see how everything fits together. As always, Moore's text offers balanced content, beginning with data analysis, then covering probability and inference in the context of statistics as a whole. It provides a wealth of opportunities for students to work with data from a wide range of disciplines and real-world settings, emphasizing the big ideas of statistics in the context of learning specific skills used by professional statisticians. Thoroughly updated throughout, the new edition offers new content, features, cases, data sources, and exercises, plus new media support for instructors and students—including the latest version of the widely-adopted StatsPortal. The full picture of the contemporary practice of statistics has never been so captivatingly presented to an uninitiated audience.
