A Practical Manual to Labor and Delivery for Medical Students and Residents ReviewThis is an excellent book. It is easy to read, well indexed and can be used as either a reference or overview. It is simple enough in explanations that it can be understood by a third year medical student but has enough depth that it serves as an invaluable resource for first and second year house staff. The algorithm are for preterm birth and PPROM are excellent. The procedural direction puts into words how to do things that are mysteries until you've actually tried them. And, the dictations and sample notes at the end make documentation a breeze. I would recommend it to all house staff, third year medical students on their OBGYN rotation and fourth year students who want to look like stars on their Sub-Is. It was required for my first semester in nursing school and I found myself using it even then to write care plans and find rationales and now that I'm in the med-surg semester I use it even more to refer to pathophysiology of patients conditions, look for tips on what to watch for in every patient that could indicate possible complications, etc. It includes a brief overview of the anatomy & physiology of the following body system and also gives an detailed, indepth step-by-step "how to" for assessments of a patient, including abnormal findings. Statistics Explained: A Guide for Social Science Students, 2nd Edition ReviewThe only topics missing from this book that I wish had been discussed are validity (concurrent, longitudinal predictive, diagnostic) and item analysis (difficulty and discrimination indexes). A few pages are devoted to reliability, but I would have liked to see more detailed discussion devoted to the differences between the types of reliability measurement (test-retest, split halves, and parallel forms reliability).
These minor points aside, this book is a wonderfully readable and not at all intimidating introduction to statistics. Fundamentals of Nursing: Standards and Practice (Fundamentals of Nursing (Delaune)) ReviewI thought this book was excellent as far as these kinds of books go...I haven't read the entire thing thus far, but it has a great chapter on complementary and alternative medicine, terrific nursing alerts, nice chapter on nursing history. There's a lot here - don't drop it on your foot! These two New Orleans nurses have definitely put a lot of thought into the organization and inclusion of material into this weighty volume! Accompanying CD is nice, but I've been told by other students that the quizzes are far too simplistic compared with the ones their instructors give them. Still, this book would make a great reference for any student or nurse who needed a refresher.
