Holt Middle School Math Course 2, Grade 7 Student Textbook ReviewI use this book in school. It's not the most interesting subject, but it does work.
On the first few pages it shows that teachers really enjoy this book rather than Silver Burdett & Ginn or other math textbooks. It covers most of the 8th grade standards including:
-equations and inequalities
-graphing
-integers
-exponents and scientific notation
-rational numbers and operations
-real numbers
-collecting and describing data
-displaying data
-plane figures
-patterns in geometry
-perimeter and area
-3-d geometry
-ratios, rates, and proportions
-similarity and scale
-numbers and percents
-applying percents
-experimental probability
-theoretical probability and counting
-solving linear equations
-linear relationships
-sequences
-functions
There are twelve chapters in this book that put in two or three related standards and combining them in each chapter. Before every chapter is an Are U Ready? which has practice on the strategies needed in the chapter. There is also a "Focus on Problem Solving" which gives problem solving questions in standards already covered in the chapter (it's dead center in the chapter). There are also Mid-Chapter Quizzes which are halfway in the chapter to refresh peoples minds of earlier subjects. Also before every Chapter Test there is a Study Guide and Review which allows you to practice all of the standards before it's test time.
In the back of the book is a student handbook which has "Extra Practice" pages for all the lessons and a "Skills Bank" to practice techniques to finding answers. A "Selected Answers" is also there which shows all of the answers which means you should make sure your student has shown their work instead of copied all of the answers on their homework or classwork. Later, however, I found out in Independent Practice problems there are only the odd #d answers listed, so you might want to assign those for homework and/or classwork rather than the Guided Practice.
The book also has a website (which Amazon won't let me post) which has Homework Help and Test Taking Tips.
Overall it's a pretty good math book even though I dislike math.Holt Middle School Math Course 2, Grade 7 Student Textbook Overview

Real Science-4-Kids, Physics Level 1, Student Text ReviewHaving heard rave reviews about this set (text, lab book, language connects) I was excited to teach this curriculum at a homeschool co-op in which I'm involved. (I used to teach physics and chemistry in the private and public sector.) As I have worked my way through the text and labs, I've been surprised at the number of issues that keep coming up. Call me "new fashioned" but let's work in metric (any lab that requires measurement). That's what 'real' scientists do. Call me picky but when she asks the kids to make a graph, she doesn't even get the independent and dependent variables on the right axis (the penny battery lab). She calls for equipment in the materials list but it isn't discussed how they're supposed to use in the actual procedure (the marble lab). Some charts are very poorly laid out (the slinky lab). Explanations are poorly written (the electroscope lab). Even the banana smash lab worked better w/play doh. The cars make a great observable imprint. Why waste a banana? I've had more success w/the Janet Van Cleave book on Physics experiments and demonstrations. The text is ok but lacks any excitement. Paul Hewitt's Conceptual Physics, while for an older crowd, can completely be used for this 3rd-5th grade age group and has wonderful analogies, graphics, and explanations. I've used it to supplement what I've been teaching at the co-op and my 9-11 year olds are doing great with it. My opinion: not worth the money.Real Science-4-Kids, Physics Level 1, Student Text OverviewReal Science-4-Kids Physics, Level I, written at a 4th and 5th grade level, presents college level physics in a way children can understand. Concepts included are: Laws of physics and the scientific method; force, work and energy; potential and kinetic energy; motion; chemical and electrical energy; current, magnets and electromagnets; light and sound energy; and conservation of energy.

Statistics Explained: A Guide for Social Science Students, 2nd Edition ReviewThe only topics missing from this book that I wish had been discussed are validity (concurrent, longitudinal predictive, diagnostic) and item analysis (difficulty and discrimination indexes). A few pages are devoted to reliability, but I would have liked to see more detailed discussion devoted to the differences between the types of reliability measurement (test-retest, split halves, and parallel forms reliability).
These minor points aside, this book is a wonderfully readable and not at all intimidating introduction to statistics. Statistics Explained will be warmly welcomed by students at all levels, and by the lecturers who struggle to teach them.

It was extremely helpful for him because it was interesting and cut right to the chase. It doesn't blog the reader down with unnecessary information and is written in such a way that allows the reader to capture the most important details of the topic in an interesting way. I would highly recommend this book for junior high through high school. (Even if High Schoolers have another book, this book does a great job of simplifying the information so kids can remember the importance of the topic.) I have seen several textbooks that contain so much information, and the kids don't retain the information shortly after they finish the course. Core Engineering Concepts for Students and Professionals ReviewI am an engineer but have never taken my EIT (FE) exam. I was interested in this book as possible preparation for the exam, if I decide to take it in the future. When looking through this book as soon as it landed on my door step, I was more than excited. While it does not cover any topic in detail (who would want a broad spectrum handbook to do that anyhow??!!?), it is unbelievably organized while covering many, many, many topics and engineering fields.
I currently work in a government engineering group. We all have different backgrounds. I have an electrical engineering background, while other co-workers are mechanical, civil, and chemical engineers. I told several people about this great resource. Two people have already been to my office to look through the book (PERFECT reference manual for work), and they were extremely giddy and excited about the amount it covers (excited as only an engineer could be about such a book). I've already used it several times to aid an applicant and to check some submitted applications. I feel I will be using this for years to come in my job and plan to use it in the future as a study aid for the FE exam. I think this book would be good for all engineering levels as a reference -- professionals with years in the industry, college students, and recent graduates who want a comprehensive manual that touches on (most) engineering topics. How Dinosaurs Took Flight: The Fossils, the Science, What We Think We Know, and Mysteries Yet Unsolved (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12 (Awards)) ReviewThis slim (64 pages) volume carries a hefty price tag, but at this point it's worth it, because there isn't a lot on the market covering the dinosaurs-with-feathers subject (so far as I know). Dr. Xu Xing, who wrote the foreward, is a notable character in the unfolding drama of feathered fossils being found in China.
I consider this book a bit radical in that it runs with the theory of dinosaurs being birds (or was it vice versa?), calling them all dinosaurs: nonavian dinosaurs for the "dinosaurs" and avian dinosaurs for the "birds." It is written in a fairly simple and straightforward manner; I think it is a YA title although I mostly bought it for myself (as a parent having just taken the kids to see the James Gurney's Dinotopia exhibit and activites at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge MA). I think one might want to read it with a child, so that, for example, a younger reader might not end up being teased for insisting that birds are dinosaurs. The theory is out there, it's current, but it's not completely validated yet. Chris Sloan's 2000 book Feathered Dinosaurs introduced kids to the radical idea that some dinosaurs had feathers and that birds are, in fact, a subset of dinosaurs. In How Dinosaurs Took Flight, Sloan returns to these ancient feathered creatures to introduce kids to the fascinating new finds—including a Tyrannosaur with feathers and a dinosaur with not just two but four wings. The author focuses on the tough new questions scientists are asking right now, the evidence they've gathered, the hypotheses that are developing from the evidence, and the unknowns that remain. This book will be the most up-to-date children's book on this topic on the market.
