Small Victories: The Real World of a Teacher, Her Students and Their High School ReviewI found Small Victories to be a text of incredible value for the even-handed way that it lays out the profound problems facing the New York City Public School system-- from the exhaustingly ponderous beaurocracy and latent racism of the Board of Education to the extreme poverty and violence that surrounds the students all of the time. Freedman cuts back and forth between sections of personal narrative and the political and social history of the Lower East Side so that you really gain an understanding of the way that many of these problem has been created and maintained by the education system over such a long period of time that overcoming them may be quite difficult. The story of Jessica Siegal, the teacher profiled in the book, is one of amazing courage and dedication that sinks into a depressing story of insurmountable obstacles such as uninterested politicians, bitter, lazy educators, and rampant poverty. The small victories that she achieves are incredible and important but are so far from remedying the very real problems of the school system, which short changes so many thousands of students in so many ways, that it is hard not to be left with a sinking feeling that the large failures of the system that surrounds Siegal just might swallow up the pride and drive off the teachers like her who perservere. Though this may be incredibly depressing it is a story that needs to be told and I applaud Freedman for tackling such a difficult topic with such a keen eye and unrelenting dedication to the truth.Small Victories: The Real World of a Teacher, Her Students and Their High School Overview

A Course in Miracles: Text, Workbook for Students, Manual For Teachers ReviewI am not one of those people who write book reviews just to get my picture on the about me page on amazon. In fact this is the only review that I have ever written. I was prompted to write it because, as I read the some of the more negative reviews of this book, it was quite obvious that most of these people, who wrote these reviews, had not read this book. I don't know why they felt the need to write the derogatory things about this material that were written, but I'm certain that they did not read this book, before writing there review of it. I have read this material; I have studied it for over a year. At first glance the concepts it spoke of seemed at the very least, unlikely. They certainly did not match up with the formula consensus reality had given me to work out the problems that I encountered in my life. That really didn't matter to me by that time because the old formulas had not served me that well anyway. If you are happy with everything about your life this is not a book that you should be reading. If by chance, there are aspects of your life that seem to trouble you, then this is a book that you should be reading. If a year ago you had told me that one simple book held the key to every single problem that I was faced with in my life, I would have laughed in your face, and thought that you must be a fool to say such a thing. Yet after a year of working with the concepts that this book teaches, I feel more strongly about there ability set things right in my life than ever. I came into this encounter with this material a jaded skeptic, who believed in nothing. I had tried, and rejected nearly every path, seeing truth in none of them. Yes, each seemed at first to be truth, but the initial lift that they gave proved not to stand the test of time. This material is different, It seeks to correct the errors in thinking that are currently causing the conflicts, and disappointment in our lives before they can happen. It also shows the folly of approaching the idea of love from the conventionally acceptable way. That is, reserving love only for those we have judged worthy of it. It has taught me that this is not love at all, it is only judgment. This is not a book that you can sit down and read in a night, or even in a week. The concepts that it teaches are so fundamentally different from the ones that are currently causing all the problems in your life, that it will take some time for you to readjust them. Perhaps years, After all how long has it taken you to get to this point where you truly longed to find a better way. Did you really expect it would happen over night? I gave this book 5 stars only because I wasn't given the option of giving it 1,000 stars. If this book can help someone as lost as I was, it can most likely help you too. But only if you actually read it!A Course in Miracles: Text, Workbook for Students, Manual For Teachers Overview

To Honor A Teacher: Students Pay Tribute to Their Most Influential Mentors ReviewHow many of us can look back on our education and formative years and remember a particularly enlightening moment, when a teacher, or coach, or mentor, opened our eyes and changed the direction of our lives? For me it was ninth grade honors biology class, taught by Mr. Wong. He was so enthusiastic and motivating, I decided right then and there to study biology. I majored in biology in college and have never regretted it. This wonderful book is filled with memories of these great moments. Some of these entries are filled with heart-warming emotion, others with clarity and logic. Yet all pay tribute to a special teacher or mentor who made a lasting difference in someone's life. Oftentimes we don't realize the impact until it is too late. Several of the entries are written from that perspective, as tributes to teachers who are no longer alive, but never forgotten. Inspiring, thought provoking, refreshing, and motivating, every one who teaches should read this.To Honor A Teacher: Students Pay Tribute to Their Most Influential Mentors OverviewAlmost everyone can recall a special individual-a kindly second-grade teacher, a tough but caring coach, an idealistic history instructor-who went beyond the call of duty and left an imprint on us for the rest of our lives. To Honor a Teacher is a keepsake gift book that pays tribute to those all-important mentors who helped to mold us in our school days.It contains original prose and poetry tributes to such mentors, written by a diverse range of contributors. Some entries are short, others longer; some are painstakingly crafted, others are the simple words of everyday people. Contributors include James Earl Jones, Robert Bly, Joannne Woodward, Pete Seeger, Sylvia Boorstein, and Ara Parseghian. To Honor a Teacher is a perfect gift to be given by current students, former students, parents who want to recognize a teacher's work with their child, administrators who want to award excellence, and teachers who want to honor their colleagues.

The Essential 55: An Award-Winning Educator's Rules for Discovering the Successful Student in Every Child ReviewRon Clark teaches school. He has 55 rules of "engagement" for anything from good manners (Don't take the largest piece of pie, Always say Thank-You, Make Eye Contact) to rules of responsibility and deportment (Enter the field trip building silently, Do not talk in the movies, unwrap your candy before the film to keep from disturbing others.)
These rules teach his students to be polite and attentive, to understand if they don't hand in assignments, there will be consequences (even if the assignment is just a little blue card they have to return to him the next day.) But Ron is no martinet--he has weird rules (No Doritos, just because...and a funny story to make the rule amusing.) His War of the Onions against a sadly jealous fellow teacher is both hysterically funny and touching.
Ron Clark shows the world that kids anywhere can learn to be well-brought up and polite, that manners and rules help them succeed. He makes the very important point that a teacher is an important influence since he or she is with those kids for more time during the day than the parents.
This book is fun to read and is a great story. It is also a MUST-READ for any school teacher who wants to excel with their students and give them something of tremendous value to carry them through the rest of their lives with honor and grace--good manners and good behavior.
Bravo, Ron Clark! The Essential 55: An Award-Winning Educator's Rules for Discovering the Successful Student in Every Child Overview

Cultivating the Spirit: How College Can Enhance Students' Inner Lives ReviewThere is no question that Cultivating the Spirit is another book in a long line of ground breaking research put out by the Astins that will help shape the field of higher education. It is refreshing to see mainstream researchers take on the once taboo subject of spirituality. A book length manuscript allows for a detailed explanation of the concepts they deal with, with some surprising results here and there sprinkled among what might be predicted. For those who know of the Astin's data set, there will be no surprise that they offer an amazingly deep pool of participants to shed light on issues of spirituality and religion among both students and faculty in higher education. They also are highly adept at multivariate statistical modeling, and explaining it, which helps breath life into their findings. One of their findings which raises an eyebrow initially is that students level of religious commitment changes very little during college. This stands in contrast to many findings of the past, and popular presumption that there is a fade away from religious commitment during the college years. Upon further inspection though, the items used to measure religious commitment talk about gaining spiritual strength, and ask about spiritual/religious beliefs. This raises the point about whether this construct is really measuring religion or spirituality. It struck me that future iterations of their work could benefit from a more precise operational definition and more distinct differentiation between religion and spirituality. That said, I found the book worthwhile and believe that it should be on the shelf of all of us who care about the spiritual development of college students.Cultivating the Spirit: How College Can Enhance Students' Inner Lives OverviewThis book is predicated on the belief that the spiritual development of college students has been largely ignored in our colleges and universities, despite the importance of spiritual matters to young people in their quest to lead integrated lives. Thus, while academics are understandably proud of their "outer" accomplishments in the fields of science, medicine, technology, and commerce, colleges and universities have increasingly come to neglect the student's "inner" development--the sphere of values and beliefs, emotional maturity, spirituality, and self-understanding.
The book defines "spiritual development" very broadly: how students make meaning of their education and their lives, how they develop a sense of purpose, the value and belief dilemmas that they experience, as well as the role of religion, the sacred, and the mystical in their lives. Each student, of course, will view his or her spirituality in a unique way. For many, traditional religious beliefs and practices may form the core of their spirituality; for others such beliefs and practices may play little or no part. While two-thirds of the students in the study express a strong interest in spiritual matters, well over half report that their professors never encourage discussions of religious/spiritual matters, and about the same proportion report that professors never provide opportunities to discuss the purpose and meaning of life.

By raising public awareness of the important role that spirituality plays in student learning and development, by alerting academic administrators, faculty, and curriculum committees to the importance of spiritual development, and by identifying possible strategies for enhancing that development, the book will encourage institutions to give greater priority to these spiritual aspects of students' educational and personal development.
