I'm the Teacher, You're the Student: A Semester in the University Classroom ReviewProfessor Allitt has written an entertaining book that will delight almost anyone who has had the privilege of a liberal arts education at an American university. The book is organized around a single semester of the professor's class on post-bellum U.S. history. He provides a lecture-by-lecture account of his teaching experience, with enjoyable digressions on the various issues that are the joy and bane of a teacher's life-tardy students, lazy students, students who have yet to master the fundamentals of English grammar, and, every so often, that diamond in the rough who writes cogently and provides a fresh perspective on a complex issue.
There are three things, however, that set Mr. Allitt apart from so many of his colleagues. First, while chastising his students for their mistakes-one of my favorites is the student who wrote about Teddy Roosevelt who, after charging up San Juan Hill, went on to lead the United States through the Depression and the Second World War-he is quite empathetic, patient and forgiving. He is quick to praise them when they do well. And instead of simply railing against the inadequacies of today's college students, he is quick to note the many demands on their time and the pressures they are under.
Second, he is not above second guessing his own judgments and wondering if there isn't a better approach to solving a problem than the one he has chosen.
And third, he employs a somewhat unorthodox teaching style. He employs certain techniques- such as requiring students to draw on a blackboard some of the objects that are part of the day's history lesson (e.g., a locomotive)-that are at once quaint but also quite effective. In addition, instead of relying on the safe, but boring, standardized history texts, he includes on his reading lists historical novels that convey the mood and articulate the issues of a particular era.
Alas, I must report that Professor Allitt is not infallible. At one point in the book (I think around p. 125) while discussing the period music he has chosen to share with the class at the commencement of a lecture about the 1920s and 1930s, he eschews Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue because of its excessive utilization by Delta Airlines in its TV advertisements. If the good professor spent more time watching television instead of reading books, he would know that it is United, not Delta, that is exploiting the Gershwin melody. Downing's Teaching Literacy to Students With Significant Disabilities is a practical guide to opening one's mind regarding the definition of literacy, engaging all students in literacy activities, and keeping one's expectations appropriate for all learners, especially those with significant disabilities. Included in the book are current research findings, information regarding literacy goal setting for students with significant disabilities, and practical methods to adapting and modifying literacy to make it accessible for all learners.
After reading the first chapter of this book, I immediately committed to having it become a permanent staple on my professional bookshelf. Not only does it challenge educators in an ethical way to consider their own viewpoints, biases, etc., but it provides research, experience, and ideas to help educators adhere to best practice and include all learners in the beneficial and necessary acquisition of literacy skills. The section entitled, "What is Literacy?" (page 2) was an excellent way to introduce the concept. Before all students will be able to have access to true literacy instruction, teachers must challenge themselves and their definitions in order to truly do what's best for all of their students. Moreover, the section on "Identifying Literacy Goals" (page 38) provided a practical way to ensure that the goals I set for my students are in line with 1) their best interests, 2) their present capabilities, and 3) a realistic, practical, and beneficial end. This book is one that I can refer back to and use as a reference. The Exchange Student ReviewWhat would you do if you had an exchange student living with you? What if this exchange student was from another planet? Well in this book, Exchange Student, 16-year old Daria has an exchange student live with her. This exchange student is not any normal exchange student, but he is an alien from Chela named Fen. He is about seven feet tall and changes colors with the changes of his emotions. Daria is a breeder of endangered animals and when Fen comes, she finds that he too loves animals.
Kate Gilmore, the author of this book, takes you into the book as she describes the animals, somewhat what the world looks like in about a hundred years or so, and she describes the problems and fun of this alien's visit. She has written this challenging tale with a sharp eye for human, alien, and animal ways.
If you want to learn more about this alien and how the family copes with this new member, you should read this excellent book. I personally didn't want to put the book down. The words may be a little advanced for younger children, but a great challenge and fun for more advanced students.The Exchange Student Overview

Cultivating the Spirit: How College Can Enhance Students' Inner Lives ReviewThere is no question that Cultivating the Spirit is another book in a long line of ground breaking research put out by the Astins that will help shape the field of higher education. It is refreshing to see mainstream researchers take on the once taboo subject of spirituality. A book length manuscript allows for a detailed explanation of the concepts they deal with, with some surprising results here and there sprinkled among what might be predicted. For those who know of the Astin's data set, there will be no surprise that they offer an amazingly deep pool of participants to shed light on issues of spirituality and religion among both students and faculty in higher education. They also are highly adept at multivariate statistical modeling, and explaining it, which helps breath life into their findings. One of their findings which raises an eyebrow initially is that students level of religious commitment changes very little during college. This stands in contrast to many findings of the past, and popular presumption that there is a fade away from religious commitment during the college years. Upon further inspection though, the items used to measure religious commitment talk about gaining spiritual strength, and ask about spiritual/religious beliefs. This raises the point about whether this construct is really measuring religion or spirituality. It struck me that future iterations of their work could benefit from a more precise operational definition and more distinct differentiation between religion and spirituality. That said, I found the book worthwhile and believe that it should be on the shelf of all of us who care about the spiritual development of college students.Cultivating the Spirit: How College Can Enhance Students' Inner Lives OverviewThis book is predicated on the belief that the spiritual development of college students has been largely ignored in our colleges and universities, despite the importance of spiritual matters to young people in their quest to lead integrated lives. Thus, while academics are understandably proud of their "outer" accomplishments in the fields of science, medicine, technology, and commerce, colleges and universities have increasingly come to neglect the student's "inner" development--the sphere of values and beliefs, emotional maturity, spirituality, and self-understanding.
The book defines "spiritual development" very broadly: how students make meaning of their education and their lives, how they develop a sense of purpose, the value and belief dilemmas that they experience, as well as the role of religion, the sacred, and the mystical in their lives. Each student, of course, will view his or her spirituality in a unique way. For many, traditional religious beliefs and practices may form the core of their spirituality; for others such beliefs and practices may play little or no part. While two-thirds of the students in the study express a strong interest in spiritual matters, well over half report that their professors never encourage discussions of religious/spiritual matters, and about the same proportion report that professors never provide opportunities to discuss the purpose and meaning of life.

By raising public awareness of the important role that spirituality plays in student learning and development, by alerting academic administrators, faculty, and curriculum committees to the importance of spiritual development, and by identifying possible strategies for enhancing that development, the book will encourage institutions to give greater priority to these spiritual aspects of students' educational and personal development.
