Real Science-4-Kids, Physics Level 1, Student Text ReviewHaving heard rave reviews about this set (text, lab book, language connects) I was excited to teach this curriculum at a homeschool co-op in which I'm involved. (I used to teach physics and chemistry in the private and public sector.) As I have worked my way through the text and labs, I've been surprised at the number of issues that keep coming up. Call me "new fashioned" but let's work in metric (any lab that requires measurement). That's what 'real' scientists do. Call me picky but when she asks the kids to make a graph, she doesn't even get the independent and dependent variables on the right axis (the penny battery lab). She calls for equipment in the materials list but it isn't discussed how they're supposed to use in the actual procedure (the marble lab). Some charts are very poorly laid out (the slinky lab). Explanations are poorly written (the electroscope lab). Even the banana smash lab worked better w/play doh. The cars make a great observable imprint. Why waste a banana? I've had more success w/the Janet Van Cleave book on Physics experiments and demonstrations. The text is ok but lacks any excitement. Paul Hewitt's Conceptual Physics, while for an older crowd, can completely be used for this 3rd-5th grade age group and has wonderful analogies, graphics, and explanations. I've used it to supplement what I've been teaching at the co-op and my 9-11 year olds are doing great with it. My opinion: not worth the money.Real Science-4-Kids, Physics Level 1, Student Text OverviewReal Science-4-Kids Physics, Level I, written at a 4th and 5th grade level, presents college level physics in a way children can understand. Concepts included are: Laws of physics and the scientific method; force, work and energy; potential and kinetic energy; motion; chemical and electrical energy; current, magnets and electromagnets; light and sound energy; and conservation of energy.

Latin for Americans Level 2 Student Edition ReviewLatin for Americans by B L Ullman and Charles Henderson is the best Latin textbook series on the market today. I purchased all three books. It is available as Level 1, 2 and 3. It has vocabulary, Roman culture, grammar, exercises, a Latin paragraph to read and translate and excellent pictures in every chapter of the book. The books also have a workbook for Level 1 and 2. These books were first printed in 1941 and the most recent copyright is 2003/2004 which is the 9th edition. The workbooks reinforce the material that is in the textbooks. These textbooks are easy to read and understand. These textbooks are used in most high school Latin classes. Some colleges may also use these books. I rate these books as number 1 with an A plus!Latin for Americans Level 2 Student Edition OverviewLevel 2 continues to build the strong foundation of grammar, vocabulary, culture, and reading that students develop in Latin for Americans, Level 1.Students are introduced to Latin literature in Latin for Americans, Level 2.

The Historian's Toolbox: A Student's Guide to the Theory and Craft of History ReviewWilliams gives instructors and students of history two books in one. Part one is a quick look at some of the big ideas and controversies of the profession. These short chapters on such topics as metahistory and anti-history should provide great fodder for class discussions. Part two on "the tools of history" offers good guidance on researching, writing, and thinking about history. Again, short, provocative chapters should stimulate students to think and talk about the joys and difficulties of doing quality history. I'll assign the book to my next class on historical research and writing. With this book as a guide, students will not write just another term paper; they'll know how to craft a livelier, deeper, and more revealing interpretation of the past. The Historian's Toolbox: A Student's Guide to the Theory and Craft of History OverviewWhat is history and how do we learn about it? How has our understanding of history changed and developed over the years? How do historians and students actually go about "doing" history? In an engaging and entertaining style, this accessible "how-to" manual introduces readers to the theory, craft, and methods of history and provides a series of "tools" to help anyone read, research, and understand the past. The first half of the book is a stimulating overview of the key elements of history - evidence, narrative, judgment - that explores how the study and concepts of history have evolved over the centuries. The second half guides readers through the "workshop" of history. Unlocking the historian's "toolbox," it reveals the tricks of the trade, offering concrete examples and practical advice on the study, comprehension, and communication of history. The book covers myriad historical tools, including documents, sources, footnotes, arguments, bibliographies, chronologies, and many other items. It also examines professional ethics and controversial issues, such as plagiarism, historical hoaxes, and conspiracy theories. Brief and illuminating, and filled with fascinating historical information and stories, The Historian's Toolbox will inspire students and teachers alike as it cuts through the jargon and explains simply the "why," "what," and "how" of history.

Bringing Down the House : The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions ReviewAuthor Ben Mezrich is on the streak of a lifetime, with his top-selling, wildly flawed, heavily fictionalized "history" of a well-known blackjack team getting made into a movie by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Pretty impressive. MGM, after all, as Mezrich notes in a recent interview, is "the same company that owns most of the large casinos in Vegas." (See the February, 2004 Kuro5hin interview at http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2004/2/5/5855/53465.) The only problem with this observation, like many of the major and minor details in Mezrich's book, is that it isn't true. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the movie company, and MGM Mirage, the casino company, are totally separate corporations, just as Mezrich's Las Vegas and the real Nevada town are totally different. Mezrich may be the only gambling writer in America who doesn't know these elementary facts.
For four years I've supported myself and my family by counting cards in American casinos and winning at blackjack. It is a tense, weird, exhilirating life, and I would love for more of my friends to understand it. This book doesn't help. Not only is the grade-school prose tedious. Not only are the technical blackjack details, on those few occasions when Mezrich summons the pluck to try tackling them, incorrect or misleading. The dramatic structure gropes and falls flat. The journalism is scandalously lazy and erroneous. Above all, the spirit, the eclat that card counters muster to wage our little war against casinoland is missing. Mezrich doesn't get it and can't report it. He hasn't been there and he doesn't know, his scanty experimental plays with MIT alums notwithstanding. If you want to know what gamblers are like and how we live, skip this drivel.
Look instead at legendary hustler Amarillo Slim's new memoir, Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People. Look at Jesse May's insuperable poker novel, Shut Up and Deal, which more than any other book depicts the dark heart of the professional player. If it's blackjack history and the activities of the major teams you're into, read Ken Uston. If you want to understand the technical aspects of the game, get Don Schlesinger, Arnold Snyder, Peter Griffin, and, for old time's sake, Ed Thorpe. If you want to learn how a notorious high-stakes counter makes his way in the world, read Ian Andersen's Burning the Tables in Las Vegas. There's so much good gambling writing out there, with so much real-life experience underlying it, that wasting time and money on Mezrich is a sucker's bet.Bringing Down the House : The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions Overview

Blair Handbook, The (with MyCompLab NEW with E-Book Student Access Code Card) (5th Edition) ReviewThis book is perfect for any student of writing, whether enrolled in a university or not. It guides the reader through every stage of the writing process: planning, drafting, researching, revising, and editing.
The unique features of this book are (1) helpful ESL boxes that offer important tips for international students, or for those that help international students, (2) Questions for analysis and useful assignments, both for individuals and groups, (3) a clear, exciting format that makes for easy, captivating reading, and (4) practical charts and helps for easy reference. The book can be read like a novel or used as a reference tool. The only problem is that, because of the size of the book, the softcover does not wear well. I would recommend buying hardcover.
I have always avoided writing; it never quite turns out the way I want. But this handbook, with its clear explanations and user-friendly tone, has inspired me to simply write, not letting burdens of worry slow me down. I have been encouraged to have fun exploring new ways of putting my fingers to the keyboard. This book is for anyone who is not a writer, or is, but wants to be one.Blair Handbook, The (with MyCompLab NEW with E-Book Student Access Code Card) (5th Edition) OverviewThis widely acclaimed handbook provides students withthe most focus on critical thinking, writing process, particularly revision, and writing across the curriculum. The fifth edition of The Blair Handbook is the clearest and most accessible editionyet. It continues to explain and illustrate the qualities of good writing and the logic behind conventions of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage. And it continues to insist that good writing results from imaginative composing, careful revising, and editing. At the same time, the new edition addscoverage ofvisual rhetoric, public forms of discourse, Writing Across the Curriculum, and writing for the world of work.

Our Underachieving Colleges: A Candid Look at How Much Students Learn and Why They Should Be Learning More ReviewThis critique of higher education is written by Derek Bok, once and future president of Harvard University (he's taken over from Larry Summers as interim leader). But Bok's experience at Harvard - while it certainly informs his analysis - does not make him an elitist. Far from it, his suggested reforms, as he explains, may work best at schools not so hide-bound as Harvard with tradition and defensiveness: "which may help to explain why so many of the most interesting teaching innovations do not begin in the best-known universities but in colleges with less prominent reputations" (337).
Bok's analysis marks out a welcome middle path between knee-jerk defenders of the American university and its detractors. While relatively speaking, our system of higher education remains the envy of the rest of the world, it still fails undergraduate students in a million small ways, chiefly connected with its lack of attention to how students learn best in and out of the classroom. Bok's complaint is not that colleges have lost their way - he's very clear that there was no Golden Age of American higher education - but that we could be doing much better.
In a series of chapters devoted to the skills that he believes students should work at during their four college years, Bok slays a number of sacred cows and offers concrete suggestions for how to make substantial improvements. For example, he is refreshingly skeptical of the value of "concentrations" (probably known as "majors" to most of us); their requirements grow larger and larger, but what are they really accomplishing? Similarly, he expresses skepticism about distribution requirements, making the point that they often amount to a hodge-podge of unrelated courses chosen by students because they are easy or will help them get a job (though elsewhere Bok is very sympathetic to the student's need to prepare for a career during college). Even when students choose their general education courses from genuine curiosity, the courses (for example, large introductory science courses) have often been designed as "foundations for students intending to major in the field and perhaps go on to obtain a Ph.D." (261). Such courses won't really help the student who wants a basic holistic introduction to the field. Bok always wants to move us back to a firmer understanding of educational purposes.
Perhaps Bok's most serious and repeated criticism concerns pedagogy. As he observes, there is just not enough attention to it. Important introductory courses are too often taught by graduate students and adjuncts to save money for the institution and time for tenured faculty research. The courses that the regular faculty do teach are usually presented in a lecture format that does not involve students actively in their learning. Bok, however, is not a defeatist, and he does generally respect the American faculty, repeatedly noting that most college teachers are "conscientious," "thoughtful," and concerned with student learning. This assumption makes his book quite different from critiques of higher education such as those written by pundits like Roger Kimball or William Bennett. And it is what enables Bok to offer real, practical suggestions for improvement, which he does both throughout the study and especially in the final chapter.
Bok believes that, with the appropriate incentives, college faculty and administrators can be motivated to focus more on undergraduate teaching and outcomes for students. Because measurement of teaching quality and learning outcomes is so problematic, he suggests that resources be provided that encourage faculty and deans to develop plans for a "continuous process of self-scrutiny" (342) with the aim of improving teaching. He is no Pangloss; he doesn't imagine that universities can reform themselves overnight. But he is not a defeatist either. His clear-eyed and plucky approach is refreshing. He often says his reforms will not cost much ("Fortunately research of this kind is not financially burdensome" [339]); is that Harvard's endowment talking there?
To wit, I do have a few reservations: Although Bok criticizes curricular fragmentation, many of his proposals might lead to more of it, especially his mandatory courses in intercultural understanding and moral reasoning. I think he underestimates both the difficulty of teaching such complex intangibles and also the danger that these courses will devolve into indoctrination. I also think that he puts too much faith in student surveys and other kinds of educational research. Again and again he cites such studies as if they did not have the methodological problems he acknowledges elsewhere. As a lawyer, Bok tilts toward the social sciences and away from the arts, humanities, and hard sciences. Thus, it's not surprising that many of his proposals move schools toward educating students in citizenship. He may be frank about his purposes, but personally I don't always agree with them. I note in this regard that a student could graduate from the ideal university, described in this book, without having taken a single course that studied the world before 1900.Our Underachieving Colleges: A Candid Look at How Much Students Learn and Why They Should Be Learning More Overview
