A Not Entirely Benign Procedure ReviewI am a biology major/ pre-med student at UCLA, though it is through my English class that I found this book. Simply put, this novel made me think. I continuously wondered, "can i handle 'dog dissection'... will I be able to memorize all of the countless facts about all these rare diseases?" An entire section of the book is devoted to bioethical issues, including one essay entitled, "DNR," (do not resuscitate). I began questioning myself, "is it fair to bring someone back just so that they can suffer longer with the same disease?" If you plan on going to medical school, reading this book is a must, and a joy; it is perfect for pre-meds.A Not Entirely Benign Procedure Overview

A.D.A.M. Student Atlas of Anatomy ReviewThere's not much I can say on a medical book that seems to include every body part known to man. I can say that I wish I would have had this in my collection for AP classes, that I learned a few more pieces of the human jigsaw than I knew before, and that I was impressed. The only thing I wondered was this - is this book really a beginner edition? It says it is but, when looking at the starter stuff, this thing is far more impressive.
If you need a book like this you know it and, if you question if it is worth the cost, it is.
It certainly made it to my shelf.A.D.A.M. Student Atlas of Anatomy Overview

Becoming a Doctor: From Student to Specialist, Doctor-Writers Share Their Experiences ReviewWhile in the exam room, gowned in that flimsy blue paper robe, have you ever wondered what is going on in the mind of the doctor perched on the stool in front of you?
Judging from the essays in this book, there's plenty going on in there! These wonderful stories about the preparation for and practice of medicine come from some very gifted doctors whose pens obviously do more than just scratch out prescriptions.
I particularly enjoyed the essays that illuminate the day-to-day life of a resident, an intern, or a practicing doctor. "Pas de Deux" by Danielle Ofri, "First in My Class" by Chris Stookey, and "A Fire, Deliberately Set," by Peggy Sarjeant are a few of my favorites.
I've been on a medical reading kick lately and can also recommend Ask Me Why I Hurt: The Kids Nobody Wants and the Doctor Who Heals Them by Dr. Randy Christensen and Gray Matter: A Neurosurgeon Discovers the Power of Prayer . . . One Patient at a Time by Dr. David Levy.
But, truly, if I insist on reading fantastic books like these late into the night, I'm going to have to get my doctor to write me a prescription for Ambien, so I can finally get some sleep!Becoming a Doctor: From Student to Specialist, Doctor-Writers Share Their Experiences Overview

Professionalism in Medicine: A Case-Based Guide for Medical Students ReviewThe successful practice of medicine requires more than a body of knowledge, it also requires a code of conduct. That's why "Professionalism In Medicine: A Case-Based Guide For Medical Students" should be a core component of all medical school curriculums. Compiled and edited by the team of John Spandorfer (Associate Professor of Medicine, Jefferson Medical College), Charles A. Pohl (Professor of Pediatrics, Jefferson Medical College), Susan L. Rattner (Professor Medicine and Family and Community Medicine, Jefferson Medical College), and Thomas J. Nasca (Professor of Medicine and Chief Executive Officer of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medicine (Jefferson Medical College), "Professionalism In Medicine" is a compilation of seventy-two illustrative cases helping the reader appreciate and benefit from real-life professional dilemmas commonly encountered by medical students and practicing physicians in a variety of medical specialties. The contributors are drawn from forty-six medical schools and institutions and include physicians, pharmacists, nurses, psychologists, medical social workers, health care administrators, and patient advocates. A superbly organized and expertly presented body of commentary that is as thoughtful and it is thought-provoking, "Professionalism In Medicine" is an essential addition to personal, professional, medical school, and academic library Health & Medicine reference collections.Professionalism in Medicine: A Case-Based Guide for Medical Students OverviewLearning medical professionalism is a challenging, evolving, and life-long endeavor. Professionalism in Medicine: A Case-Based Guide for Medical Students helps begin this process by engaging students and their teachers in reflection on cases that resonate with the experiences of life in medicine. Through the book's seventy-two cases, commentaries, videos, and literature-based reviews, students explore the many challenging areas of medical professionalism. Readers will appreciate the provocative professionalism dilemmas encountered by students from the pre-clinical years and clinical rotations and by physicians of various specialties. Each case is followed by two commentaries by writers who are involved in health care decisions related to that case, and who represent a wide variety of perspectives. Authors represent 46 medical schools and other institutions and include physicians, medical students, medical ethicists, lawyers, psychologists, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, health care administrators, and patient advocates.

Stedman's Medical Dictionary, Student Value Pack (Book with CD-ROM) ReviewHaving just started my medical studies I was looking for a complete dictionary to meet my demand for a comprehensive and "easy-to-use" book to guide my among the vast and sometimes difficult medical language. I found quickly that Stedman's had everything i could ever ask for in a medical dictionary. It's up to date in current research and also has many entries for termonology of old. The book is very comprehensive and detailed and even surpassed my dictionary of organic chemistry when I studied the subject.
What I especially apriciate with this book is it's pedagogical illustrations and a passage with "building-blocks of the medical language" wich has been a great help for me in understanding and memorizing medical terms.
During my studies I have compared my dictionary with many other medical dictonaries and have found that Stedman's remains my first choise by far!Stedman's Medical Dictionary, Student Value Pack (Book with CD-ROM) OverviewBrandon/Hill Medical List first-purchase and minimal-core selection (#133) and Brandon/Hill Allied Health List selection (#73). Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology: with STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Guyton Physiology) ReviewI thought it might be helpful to people if I excerpted the following from Prof. John Hall's preface to the 12th edition because it deals in part with what revisions he made for the book:
"I worked closely with Dr. Guyton for almost 30 years and had the privilege of writing parts of the 9th and 10th editions. After Dr. Guyton's tragic death in an automobile accident in 2003, I assumed responsibility for completing the 11th edition.
For the 12th edition of the Textbook of Medical Physiology, I have the same goal as for previous editions - to explain, in language easily understood by students, how the different cells, tissues, and organs of the human body work together to maintain life.[...]
A brief explanation is needed about several features of the 12th edition. Although many of the chapters have been revised to include new principles of physiology, the text length has been closely monitored to limit the book size so that it can be used effectively in physiology courses for medical students and health care professionals. Many of the figures have also been redrawn and are in full color. New references have been chosen primarily for their presentation of physiological principles, for the quality of their own references, and for their easy accessibility. The selected bibliography at the end of the chapters lists papers mainly from recently published scientific journals that can be freely accessed from the PubMed internet site at [...]. Use of these references, as well as cross-references from them, can give the student almost complete coverage of the entire field of physiology. The effort to be as concise as possible has, unfortunately, necessitated a more simplified and dogmatic presentation of many physiologic principles than I normally would have desired. However, the bibliography can be used to learn more about the controversies and unanswered questions that remain in understanding the complex functions of the human body in health and disease.
Another feature is that the print is set in two sizes. The material in large print constitutes the fundamental physiologic information that students will require in virtually all of their medical activities and studies.
The material in small print is of several different kinds: first, anatomic, chemical, and other information that is needed for immediate discussion but that most students will learn in more detail in other courses; second, physiologic information of special importance to certain fields of clinical medicine; and, third, information that will be of particular value to those students who may wish to study particular physiologic mechanisms more deeply."Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology: with STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Guyton Physiology) Overview

Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Robbins Pathology) ReviewThere is no doubt majority of medical students throughout the world use this book. And I do think it is very informative. But you must be willing to spend a lot of time reading it, especially if this is the only book you plan on using in pathology. Because it takes a lot of time to comb through the huge amount of info in this book to pick out what is important for medical students to remember. So I would recommend most medical students to also buy Rapid Review Pathology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access because it is much more clinically oriented and also gives you the pathophysiology behind the symptoms which Robbins does not. I also feel that though Robbins does a good job mentioning the symptoms in a concise manner, it could do a lot better integrating the symptoms with the pathology. So I would use this book as a reference book in the truest sense. Meaning I would get a brief idea of the topic from Rapid Review or some other source and then read Robbins if you have time. But for certain things you will probably have to go directly to Robbins. For example, Robbins does a great job with the morphology, which is some what lacking in most review books like Rapid Review and BRS. I would buy the book only if you have a good amount of time to learn the subject or just really like pathology. But i would NOT buy it if you are
1. looking for a quick review, ie before step 1 (because really most of info in this book wont help there)
2. if you dont have a lot of time to focus solely on pathology and this book. Because as I said it will take time for you to read through all the info and pick out important points that you need to learn. And on top of that to be able to do this, you will first have to get use to the writing style of this book which is very different. (often study based)
As for difference between 7th and 8th editions. I personally dont think there is that much of a difference. The authors mention extensively redoing the first chapter and third. But other than that I think its mostly reorganizing and making it look more pleasing. ie cut from here and paste there. So I dont think its worth buying 8th if you have the 7th. And if you are really tight on cash I would buy the 7th. I really don't think they have changed the info at all specially in systemic pathology.Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Robbins Pathology) Overview
