Classroom Literacy Assessment: Making Sense of What Students Know and Do (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) ReviewMost of the articles are well-structured. The autghor or authors define and discuss the literacy concept (e.g. word recogniotion)with a historical perspective. Then they proceed to review research literature about the concept. The articles explore both effective assessment techniques as well as strategies. Most of the articles also provide vivid descriptions on how the assessment technique was used in the classroom. I'm quite impressed because the reader gets the information needed to understand the issues that have to do with literacy. Everything discussed and suggested is research supported.Classroom Literacy Assessment: Making Sense of What Students Know and Do (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) OverviewShowcasing assessment practices that can help teachers plan effective instruction, this book addresses the real-world complexities of teaching literacy in grades K-8. Leading contributors present trustworthy approaches that examine learning processes as well as learning products, that yield information on how the learning environment can be improved, and that are conducted in the context of authentic reading and writing activities. The volume provides workable, nuts-and-bolts ideas for incorporating assessment into instruction in all major literacy domains and with diverse learners, including students in high-poverty schools and those with special learning needs. It is illustrated throughout with helpful concrete examples.

The Portfolio Connection: Student Work Linked to Standards ReviewIn this day and age of accountability and NCLB, the human element of teaching unfortunately goes to the wayside. Teachers might hear from their students, "school isnt fun anymore." This book really guides teachers into bringing back the joy of school and celebrate student work. There are plenty of examples, forms, ideas, etc. to get the teacher going. I LOVE THE CHECKLIST BASED ON STANDARDS!!! Although I have yet to implement, I shared the ideas with my colleagues, who then implemented the ideas and say their kids love having a portfolio and "when can we make the next one?" This is definately a purchase you sould make along with Kay Burke's other book, "From Standards to Rubrics in Six Steps: Tools for Assessing Student Learning, K-8."The Portfolio Connection: Student Work Linked to Standards OverviewThis third edition covers implementing portfolios that incorporate standards. Includes examples for students with special needs, plus expanded information on e-portfolios and NCLB's impact on assessment.

Professionalism in Medicine: A Case-Based Guide for Medical Students ReviewThe successful practice of medicine requires more than a body of knowledge, it also requires a code of conduct. That's why "Professionalism In Medicine: A Case-Based Guide For Medical Students" should be a core component of all medical school curriculums. Compiled and edited by the team of John Spandorfer (Associate Professor of Medicine, Jefferson Medical College), Charles A. Pohl (Professor of Pediatrics, Jefferson Medical College), Susan L. The contributors are drawn from forty-six medical schools and institutions and include physicians, pharmacists, nurses, psychologists, medical social workers, health care administrators, and patient advocates. A superbly organized and expertly presented body of commentary that is as thoughtful and it is thought-provoking, "Professionalism In Medicine" is an essential addition to personal, professional, medical school, and academic library Health & Medicine reference collections.Professionalism in Medicine: A Case-Based Guide for Medical Students OverviewLearning medical professionalism is a challenging, evolving, and life-long endeavor. Assessing Students with Special Needs (3rd Edition) ReviewThe book is okay. For the class that I was taking it for, IEPs, it didn't do a great job of walking me through the process. However, it is easy to read and the stories of actual teachers are well written.Assessing Students with Special Needs (3rd Edition) OverviewFor courses in Assessment of Students with Special Needs. With a new focus on curriculum-based assessment, this easy-to-follow text provides all of the information future teachers need in order to make optimal use of formal and informal assessments to inform and improve daily instructional practice in the classroom. In short, this one volume incorporates ways to use formal and informal assessments, tests, and measurements to help students of all ages, all grade levels, and all abilities grow, develop, and learn to the maximum extent possible.

Instruction of Students with Severe Disabilities (6th Edition) ReviewThis was my Special Ed textbook in 1997 and I was looking forward to this sixth edition. It's very comprehensive and covers a wide range of topics relating to students with severe disabilities. My only reservation here is that the book is so pro-inclusion, it's really presenting a very biased viewpoint. Hypothetical students are all happily enrolled in mainstream settings where they make great educational gains because they're exposed to typical peers, who of course accept them wholeheartedly and benefit from their presence. A little unrealistic I feel.Instruction of Students with Severe Disabilities (6th Edition) OverviewThis highly successful book addresses the full range of curriculum topics involved in educating individuals with severe disabilities. Instruction of Students with Severe Disabilities examines the principles behind teaching students with severe and multiple disabilities. This edition includes more information on alternative assessment, a stronger focus on positive behavior interventions and supports, and additional strategies on peer relationships.

Uncovering Student Thinking in Mathematics: 25 Formative Assessment Probes ReviewUncovering Student Thinking in Mathematics: 25 Formative Assessment Probes is one of the best mathematics assessment books I have read! In addition to well-crafted assessments and alternative versions, the authors provide detailed information as to what conceptual or procedural gaps students may have based on distractor choices. The assessments can be used with all levels of students from kindergarten through high school. Gradeband scales associated with each assessment make it easy to determine when students would probably be introduced to skills covered by an assessment, and in what grade levels students usually still struggle with those skills. I found this an easy book to read, and I would recommend this book to any teacher who wishes to increase usage of assessment for learning to determine next instructional steps for students.Uncovering Student Thinking in Mathematics: 25 Formative Assessment Probes OverviewAppropriate for all grade levels, these 25 field-tested, easy-to-use mathematics assessment probes help teachers modify instruction by determining students' understanding of core mathematical concepts.

A Road Map for Improvement of Student Learning And Support Services Through Assessment ReviewThis book is a must-have for anyone involved with assessment in higher education. It is not only a clear introduction to assessment for the beginner but also a concise guidebook for the more experienced. Dr. Nichols explains in plain words the assessment of both student-learning at all three levels as well as that of institutional effectiveness. In addition, he enhances his already exceptional explanations with understandable and solid examples from a variety of academic programs and support units.
If my institution had funds for only one book on assessment, this would be it; it is clearly written, simple, and practical.

Uncovering Student Thinking in Mathematics, Grades 6-12: 30 Formative Assessment Probes for the Secondary Classroom ReviewThe book arrived early and in perfect condition. Assessing Student Learning (JB - Anker) ReviewThis book was required for one of my courses, but it's very easy to understand, and the tables are a great tool. It's not great for how to do program or services assessment, but is very good for assessing classroom learning.Assessing Student Learning (JB - Anker) OverviewInterest in assessing student learning at institutions of higher education—and the need to learn how to do it—continues to gather the attention and support begun nearly 30 years ago. This book summarizes contemporary thinking on the practice of assessing student learning in a comprehensive, accessible, and useful fashion. This book is short on background and theory and long on practical advice. Plainspoken and informally written, it offers sensible guidance for assessment practitioners on all aspects of student assessment and for faculty who simply want to improve assessment within their classrooms. Assessing Student Learning presents readers with well-informed principles and options that they can select and adapt to their own circumstances.
Linda Suskie, currently the Vice President of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, has worked for 30 years in higher education assessment, institutional research, strategic planning, and continuous improvement.
Organized into four parts, this book
Sets the stage for successful assessment efforts by discussing the nature of and rationale for assessment, principles of good practice, and campus culture

Instructing Students Who Have Literacy Problems (with MyEducationLab) (6th Edition) ReviewI teach literacy methods at Minnesota State University, Mankato for general education teachers as well as teachers of students with learning disabilities. McCormick's book provides a very sound basis for understanding all aspects of literacy instruction for special needs populations as it relates to assessment and instructional interventions.
I especially apprecite that four chapters are devoted to assessment. Excellent. She provides a very thorough analysis of the different types and purposes of assessment and includes informal assessment along with formal assessment.
This is not designed to be a beginnng text for literacy instruction. It is designed to build upon an existing body of knowledge related to literacy instruction. It would be benificial for all classroom teachers to understand, however, it is especially suited for reading specialists and special education LD instructors who teach literacy.
Dr. Andrew JohnsonInstructing Students Who Have Literacy Problems (with MyEducationLab) (6th Edition) OverviewInstructing Students Who Have Literacy Problems has long been valued because it covers both assessment and instructional strategies in a sound, research-based format. It reflects a balanced view of literacy instruction, comprehensively examining both word study and comprehension. It is the definitive research-based book on assessment and instruction of struggling readers. Four complete chapters on formal and informal assessment, plus chapters on instructional interventions, including reading instruction for special populations, allow professors the option of using the book for one inclusive course, or, using it across two courses in those universities where diagnosis and instruction are taught separately. Many case studies of students, as well as vignettes of teachers in action, illustrate real-world applications of the textbook content. There are practical strategies suggested in the text for elementary and secondary students and for students from a variety of language backgrounds. This valuable book will successfully guide teachers so they can best help students who have reading difficulties – difficulties of all types and at all levels of severity. 0131381520 / 9780131381520 Instructing Students Who Have Literacy Problems (with MyEducationLab) Package consists of: 0135140870 / 9780135140871 MyEducationLab Student Access Code Card 0137023588 / 9780137023585 Instructing Students Who Have Literacy Problems(Cloth)

Assessing Students with Special Needs (7th Edition) ReviewI had to purchase this book for a graduate course about assessing students with special needs. I'm only about halfway through the course, but I can already tell that I won't be selling it after the course is over. This will be a useful book to return to again and again as I assess and work with students with disabilities. Each of the five parts (introduction to special education assessment, skills for special educators, assessment for special education eligibility, assessment of academic skills, and important considerations) provides several in-depth chapters delving into the intricacies of choosing and administering assessments and then using those results in meaningful ways.Assessing Students with Special Needs (7th Edition) OverviewThis comprehensive text for future teachers of learners with disabilities is grounded in the idea that assessment is at the center of all good teaching. Its hallmarks are its accessibility, balanced coverage of both this formal and informal assessment, plus thorough exploration of the link between gathering information and actually using it to make informed decisions. Offering a step-by-step Assessment Question Model on the inside front cover, it equips readers to understand the complete assessment process, from choosing the best tool, to adapting instruction to improving outcomes. Popular, as well as lesser-known, tools are examined in order to acquaint readers with promising procedures for assessing students with special needs.
