I'm the Teacher, You're the Student: A Semester in the University Classroom ReviewProfessor Allitt has written an entertaining book that will delight almost anyone who has had the privilege of a liberal arts education at an American university. The book is organized around a single semester of the professor's class on post-bellum U.S. history. He provides a lecture-by-lecture account of his teaching experience, with enjoyable digressions on the various issues that are the joy and bane of a teacher's life-tardy students, lazy students, students who have yet to master the fundamentals of English grammar, and, every so often, that diamond in the rough who writes cogently and provides a fresh perspective on a complex issue.
There are three things, however, that set Mr. Allitt apart from so many of his colleagues. First, while chastising his students for their mistakes-one of my favorites is the student who wrote about Teddy Roosevelt who, after charging up San Juan Hill, went on to lead the United States through the Depression and the Second World War-he is quite empathetic, patient and forgiving. He is quick to praise them when they do well. And instead of simply railing against the inadequacies of today's college students, he is quick to note the many demands on their time and the pressures they are under.
Second, he is not above second guessing his own judgments and wondering if there isn't a better approach to solving a problem than the one he has chosen.
And third, he employs a somewhat unorthodox teaching style. He employs certain techniques- such as requiring students to draw on a blackboard some of the objects that are part of the day's history lesson (e.g., a locomotive)-that are at once quaint but also quite effective. In addition, instead of relying on the safe, but boring, standardized history texts, he includes on his reading lists historical novels that convey the mood and articulate the issues of a particular era.
Alas, I must report that Professor Allitt is not infallible. At one point in the book (I think around p. 125) while discussing the period music he has chosen to share with the class at the commencement of a lecture about the 1920s and 1930s, he eschews Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue because of its excessive utilization by Delta Airlines in its TV advertisements. If the good professor spent more time watching television instead of reading books, he would know that it is United, not Delta, that is exploiting the Gershwin melody. How to Get a PhD: A Handbook for Students and Their Supervisors ReviewThis book is perfect if you are going to apply for a Phd in Britain. If you are going to do so, buy it!. However, in my opinion is not worth to buy it if you are already a phd student or you are not in the British phd system. In this case I suggest you to borrow the book or to find it in your library for a fast read. I think that the book is a little expensive for the information you will find in it. It is full of obvious advices that you probably already know, but it is not bad to see them written.
As I see it, the most important things in the book are: the definition of phd, the chapter "How to do research", the psychological aspects related with the phd process, and the chapter "The form of a Phd thesis".
The worst things are: the chapter "How to survive in a predominantly British, white, male, full academic enviroment"; I think the information reported in this chapter is common in all social and professional environments and not specific to the phd, people that belong to minorities or are under harassment situations can easily find information in more specific literature. This chapter could be substituted by a more usefull one that could be titled: "Before the Phd"; there could be inserted important information that is not present now. i.e. in science phd's is very important to have a strong mathematical background "before" you start or to have adecuate English writing/reading skill "in any case"(so you should work hard before the phd if your mother language is not English).
As conclusion, I think that the book is helpful in general and it is worth to have a look on it; a valuable point is that it is the result of a profound analysis of the British Phd process, but in another hand this can be counteractive if applied to non-british phd.How to Get a PhD: A Handbook for Students and Their Supervisors OverviewThis handbook should provide a realistic understanding of the processes of doing research for a doctorate. It discusses such issues as time management, and how to overcome the difficulties of communicating with supervisors, and considers the particular problems of groups such as women, part-time and overseas students. The book also provides practical insights for supervisors and assists senior academic administrators by examining the responsibilities that universities have for providing an adequate overall service for research students.

The African American Student's Guide to Surviving Graduate School (v. 4) ReviewI did not like this guide for several reasons.
I bought it after the admissions process was finished and it was confirmed that I was headed to grad school.
The chapters do not give any information that is not readily found in other, better books (such as "Getting What You Came For") or on the Internet. I read a LOT of graduate school guides before, during, and after applying to grad school and all of them offered something new, except for this one. Unless you are a grand newbie to the whole thing, it's certainly not worth it and it doesn't offer a fresh look or anything like that.
Second, I was surprised that the book was by an African American because it took a stereotypical view of the middle-class black American: a devoted Christian, with strong family ties, etc. Constantly through the book it was suggested that readers turn to God or their church in order to cope with problems in grad school. I am not religious and I know a lot of black Americans who also are not, especially most of the black American grad students I know, so this confused me. Also, the book seemed aimed at an older demographic, like people who were returning to graduate school after having earned their bachelor's earlier in life and perhaps had careers, family, and other concerns. It didn't appeal to this 22-year-old going straight from undergrad.
Finally, I was a bit astonished by the lack of a fresh perspective (that of a black American) on the problems of graduate school, especially since that is the premise of the book. This could just have easily been "The African American Student's Guide to Surviving Life" or something else generic. Most of the fixes, as I remember them, were just general stress-handling techniques and not tailored to the experiences of graduate students, and there were very few anecdotes about the experiences of black graduate students who felt isolated or mistreated because of their race. There was NO mention of black American grad students who may have intersecting oppressions, like the special issues of black women, black LGBT persons, black disabled persons, poor black persons, etc.
Basically, I don't recommend. The problem is that there really isn't a good book out on the market that addresses the issues of black people (or people of color, or minorities in general) in graduate school. I guess as our numbers rise we may encounter more as more are spurred to write them.The African American Student's Guide to Surviving Graduate School (v. 4) Overview

From Student to Scholar: A Candid Guide to Becoming a Professor ReviewSteven Cahn gives a concise, thoughtful, practical and pragmatic description of how one can become a scholar. He explains the major points along the way to acquiring a Ph. D and then toward holding tenure in a university. He works through the following ideas, each chapter being about seven pages a piece:

8.Teaching

10.Research
One can finish this book in probably two hours or less, depending on your reading speed. I finished it in about two hours.
Here are just a few tips, not in any particular order, which he gives that I thought were of help. First, in your road to being a scholar, above all be resilient. Brains are great, but resilience goes further. Second, you may fail a test, but take the test again and finish the degree. Third, when choosing a subject for your dissertation, have two things in mind: what are you passionate about and also finish it in two years. Fourth, when applying for jobs, pursue as many positions that are of any interest. That may mean applying at 50 schools. Fifth, when choosing a professor to study under, choose one that you like, think you will get along with and one that is similar to you. Lastly, when you are in an interview for a position, you will be asked about your dissertation. Have a two minute response prepared to share and don't talk for more than two minutes.
If I could sum up what Cahn says in one sentence, I'd say, "If you are going to become a professor and hold tenure some day, the most important thing you can do is publish your research, continue your research and be a likeable person."

This book should definitely be on the shelf of any faculty, but a student may do better to look it over in the library.
