Study Smarter, Not Harder - Think Like a Genius Straight A+ Student ReviewI am a college freshman and bought this book/DVD after getting my first semester report card. I find college is way harder than high school. Even though I spent a lot of time studying and in the library this past semester, my grades didn't show it. I looked for something that might help me! I was intrigued by the subtitle of this book "Study smarter, not harder, using the simply genius strategies of top students." So I bought it. I watched the DVD twice and read the book twice also! It was so eye opening! The students you meet make it look so easy. And now I understand why. There is stuff on time management and how to break down assignments that is useful, but what really hit home for me was how they THINK about school. Maybe it seems obvious to others, but the section that had the biggest impact for me was on setting goals and having good 'guiding questions.' These students all had goals of getting their work done quickly so they had time to do other activities they liked. That goal made them more focused in class and when they sat down to do their homework. And they tell you exactly how they do it! The best part is that I left feeling like I could follow their strategies and do it too. Maybe that's the genius part. I head back to class next week and am going to apply all of the strategies I learned. My goal is to get Straight A's this semester and have time to enjoy it. In all seriousness, I think this DVD and book should be required reading/viewing for all students. Teaching Literacy to Students With Significant Disabilities: Strategies for the K-12 Inclusive Classroom ReviewJune E. Downing's Teaching Literacy to Students With Significant Disabilities is a practical guide to opening one's mind regarding the definition of literacy, engaging all students in literacy activities, and keeping one's expectations appropriate for all learners, especially those with significant disabilities. Included in the book are current research findings, information regarding literacy goal setting for students with significant disabilities, and practical methods to adapting and modifying literacy to make it accessible for all learners.
After reading the first chapter of this book, I immediately committed to having it become a permanent staple on my professional bookshelf. Not only does it challenge educators in an ethical way to consider their own viewpoints, biases, etc., but it provides research, experience, and ideas to help educators adhere to best practice and include all learners in the beneficial and necessary acquisition of literacy skills. The section entitled, "What is Literacy?" (page 2) was an excellent way to introduce the concept. Before all students will be able to have access to true literacy instruction, teachers must challenge themselves and their definitions in order to truly do what's best for all of their students. Moreover, the section on "Identifying Literacy Goals" (page 38) provided a practical way to ensure that the goals I set for my students are in line with 1) their best interests, 2) their present capabilities, and 3) a realistic, practical, and beneficial end. This book is one that I can refer back to and use as a reference. Fires in the Mind: What Kids Can Tell Us About Motivation and Mastery ReviewAfter teaching social studies courses for 25 years, my husband still looks for new sparks to energize his classes. I was delighted to give him Kathleen Cushman's latest book, which provides that kind of spark -- and more. The core idea is a simple one: In every classroom, we do what we do in order to develop mastery or expertise, in some area, in some way. With powerful and persuasive logic, the students who co-authored this book say "Then let's really do that."
One of the aspects John found most helpful was the list of "Habits of Experts." He has already used this with a high school class for a self-evaluation process. We both were struck by how matter-of-factly they accepted the premise that they were in the class to engage in the deliberate practice required to master specific skills--in their case, reading, writing, speaking, and thinking critically, in the context of history.

The book is well written and engaging, presenting student insights in a journey of discovery that celebrates learning. Kathleen Cushman has also has done her homework; her conclusions are well supported by research in the cognitive sciences. Of all the books about education and teaching we have encountered, John and I think this is one of the most valuable. We give teachers who learn from this book (and the accompanying web site of the same name) a "check plus"!

The American Vision, Student Edition ReviewI have reviewed several history books to use for homeschooling my two kids. I had copy of this US history textbook and several other comparable US history textbooks. I found that when I wanted a really good explanation of a time period or concept, I always seemed to go back to this book. I did end up buying a second copy of this textbook for my other kid. I donated all the other history textbooks I had. This book is the only one you will need. Btw. I home school 8th and 9th graders and neither one of them have any trouble understanding this book. It explains concepts in plain English and the best part is ....unlike all the other history textbooks I reviewed....this one isn't "long winded". It gives a really good explanation and details then moves on. There isnt a bunch of unnecessary elaborating. Dont get me wrong though it gives you enough info so you get a through understanding.
