100 Things Every College Student with a Disability Ought to Know ReviewThis will be an essential purchase for any person with disabilities who is considering college. Like earlier titles I've recomended, Kendra D. Johnson and Trudie N. Hines's book recognizes and acknowlleges how the law actually works. They're not trying to exploit audiences.
Although people can enter college at any time after they have a high school/GED degree, their book is written more for the 'traditional' aged student who needs to know how the college environment substantively differs from high school special education programs. It is jam-packed with substantive information which these students should know if considering college. But it's written so they themselves easily understand and access the information for their own benefit.
It intersperses 'voices' of college student personal experiences with lists of college legal differences in a convienient format. These authors want their book to ultimately be a quick and practical reference a student will easily return to many times as they inevitably transition from high school to college.
Parents themselves might want to help with this transition process, but not necessarily know who or where to turn for advice at this point in their child's life. Accommodation have changed from what everybody previously knew and was comfortable with. This is a point itself highlighted throughout the book. The student inevitably will have to undergo this transition on their own.
This book is a great gift for individual students either considering or even heading off to college. It's also a good purchase idea for high school and/or community libraries. Students should have access to resources providing them with realistic information about what is expected and legally required in the college environment.

Instruction of Students with Severe Disabilities (6th Edition) ReviewThis was my Special Ed textbook in 1997 and I was looking forward to this sixth edition. It's very comprehensive and covers a wide range of topics relating to students with severe disabilities. My only reservation here is that the book is so pro-inclusion, it's really presenting a very biased viewpoint. Hypothetical students are all happily enrolled in mainstream settings where they make great educational gains because they're exposed to typical peers, who of course accept them wholeheartedly and benefit from their presence. It is broken up into well organized chapters, and reads well (meaning even a working professional can cover a chapter at a time without the book making them tired). It is not written in technical venacular, but in common sense terms most people interested in the subject can understand.
Unlike other books written in the field of special education it does not presume experience working with the children in question nor insult your intelligence if you are.
Most students should read this book before attempting any real fieldwork in the area of students with severe disabilities ( instead of as a textbook for a final class before student teaching as was my situation). It will give you a clearer view of the types of students you will be working with, and some of the ways to deal with them.Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities (4th Edition) OverviewThis updated editionof Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities, is written in a way that makes the most complex findings of research understandable and usable in the real educational world. In addition, they pay thoughtful attention to assessment, the role of paraprofessionals, and multicultural concerns.
