When Students Have Power: Negotiating Authority in a Critical Pedagogy ReviewIra Shor has done it again! For teachers of English, Shor presents a real life example of his teaching methods and practices. If motivating students (and teachers) is your goal, then don't miss this book. Affecting real change in a college classtoom is Shor's goal, and he presents an honest and realistic picture of what happens when the students are given the power to make their own way in a classroom. Funny, inspiring, honest, and a real source of pleasure for me! Any college writing instructor will find this a satisfying read! Save it for the long hot summer and change your Fall classroom. Trust meWhen Students Have Power: Negotiating Authority in a Critical Pedagogy OverviewWhat happens when teachers share power with students? In this profound book, Ira Shor—the inventor of critical pedagogy in the United States—relates the story of an experiment that nearly went out of control. Shor provides the reader with a reenactment of one semester that shows what really can happen when one applies the theory and democratizes the classroom. This is the story of one class in which Shor tried to fully share with his students control of the curriculum and of the classroom. After twenty years of practicing critical teaching, he unexpectedly found himself faced with a student uprising that threatened the very possibility of learning. How Shor resolves these problems, while remaining true to his commitment to power-sharing and radical pedagogy, is the crux of the book. Unconventional in both form and substance, this deeply personal work weaves together student voices and thick descriptions of classroom experience with pedagogical theory to illuminate the power relations that must be negotiated if true learning is to take place.

How Learning Works: Seven Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching (The Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education Series) ReviewAs a Dean of a school within a University, I am always on the lookout for well researched, practical and effective ways to educate our own faculty about student learning, especially for the various levels of university students (Bachelors, Masters, PhD). Any faculty member or university administrator seriously concerned with education desires to find a trustworthy and research-informed body of content, that has been carefully crafted to be usable and practical, that can serve as a tool or workbook for understanding student learning in ways that lead to clear suggestions for improving curriculum design and course delivery.
Yet, that search has been something like a quest for a holy-grail. Sure, everyone teaching at the university level wants to find this type of book. And we have all looked at numerous books on learning and teaching. But none of them were "just the thing."
Well, now "just the thing" is here. I have read this book cover to cover. It is exceptionally well done. In fact, I thought it was so well done that I called the publisher to order enough copies to give to EVERY ONE of our faculty and teaching support staff.
There is a reason why it has taken "the community" so long to finally create "just the right thing" in terms of a summary of student learning (university level) that is used as a basis for establishing principles for improving teaching.
* The work on cognitive science and its extension into the science of learning beyond the laboratory, into classroom and university settings, needed several decades to evolve and mature.
* You needed a particular group of people who were professional teachers-- as well as professionals who focused on teaching teachers about teaching-- to stay together long enough to develop deep insight into the pratical issues associated with teaching university level teachers about teaching. In other words, the team not only had to master the body of content and pragmatics associated with student learning, they had to have deep experience with teaching other teaching professionals about both the body of content as well as the pragmatics.
* At the same time, this group of "teaching center professionals" had to be so familiar with the research related to the science of learning, as well as with a much broader range of research about learning effectiveness, that they could effectively select out what was important, and weave it into a comprehensive framework that made sense for teaching teachers about student learning and teaching.
* And last of all, this group had to have the passion as well as the opportunity to commit themselves over a very long period to the mission of creating such a book.
This team, principally from Carnege Mellons' Centre for Teaching Excellence, and also including people from the University of Pittsburgh, was able to pull all of this together. It must have been a herculean task over a very long period of time. But the result reflects the dedication, capability and effort of the team. No wonder this book appeared just now, and not five or ten years ago.
Each chapter is organized as follows:
- 2 brief case study stories that illustrate the them of the chapter
- A section that summarizes "What Is Going On In These Stories?", in a way that clearly highlights the challanges associated with the theme of that particular chapter.
- A section on "What Principle Of Learning Is At Work Here?"
- A section on "What does Research Tell Us About
- A section on "Implications Of This Research" for understanding student learning and teaching
- A section on "What Strategies Does the Research Suggest", for improving student learning and teaching
- A final "Summary" section
Because of this well conceived organization, the book is very easy to use. You can quickly go to any of the seven chapters, and zero in on the part you want to know about, or you are trying to recall and apply.
In short, this book is a major contribution to the entire community of people involved with tertiary level teaching. One might argue that every university faculty member should know what is in this book, no matter what their "split" is across research and teaching. Even faculty who are essentially supported full time on research funds, and who have a limited amount of formal classroom teaching, will benefit tremendously form this book. Since their interactions with Ph.D. students and and research staff are still essentially "teaching", an understanding of student learning will prove to help with the student supervisory process. For university-level faculty from any type of institution who do classroom, studio and laboratory teaching- whether they are from a smaller scale liberal arts college, or from one of the strongest of the "R1" research universities - this book will prove invaluable. While it is really a book, and not a "workbook", I predict you will use it so often that you will consider it as well-used tool or workbook.
what else can I say? This is really good work. Get it. Use it. Connect better with student learning and students. Your students will appreciate it.
Steve Miller
Dean, School of Information Systems, Singapore Management University
Professor of Information Systems (Practice)How Learning Works: Seven Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching (The Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education Series) OverviewDistilling the research literature and translating the scientific approach into language relevant to a college or university teacher, this book introduces seven general principles of how students learn. The authors have drawn on research from a breadth of perspectives (cognitive, developmental, and social psychology; educational research; anthropology; demographics; organizational behavior) to identify a set of key principles underlying learning, from how effective organization enhances retrieval and use of information to what impacts motivation. Integrating theory with real-classroom examples in practice, this book helps faculty to apply cognitive science advances to improve their own teaching.

The College Fear Factor: How Students and Professors Misunderstand One Another ReviewThis is a wonderfully written book. It captures the essence of why so many students do not complete a college degree. The book is a great read for both prospective college and even high school students for that matter, and teachers of all stripes to understand how large the disconnect is between teacher and student. The book relates in many ways the truth that just because teachers are well-qualified in a given discipline, that doesn't mean they can connect to the students ways in which those students can be successful.
The book has clear examples through interviews ways in which all members of the educational community can improve. To highlight one specific example, teachers generally hve students write research papers and those teachers are befuddled as to why the papers turn out so badly. The writer insists that a solution such as giving the student a sample paper would cure most evils, rather than long drawn-out explanations. This was brought out in one clearly written conversation.
The College Fear Factor: How Students and Professors Misunderstand One Another Overview
They're not the students strolling across the bucolic liberal arts campuses where their grandfathers played football. They are first-generation college students—children of immigrants and blue-collar workers—who know that their hopes for success hinge on a degree.

But college is expensive, unfamiliar, and intimidating. Inexperienced students expect tough classes and demanding, remote faculty. They may not know what an assignment means, what a score indicates, or that a single grade is not a definitive measure of ability. And they certainly don't feel entitled to be there. They do not presume success, and if they have a problem, they don't expect to receive help or even a second chance.

Rebecca D. Cox draws on five years of interviews and observations at community colleges. She shows how students and their instructors misunderstand and ultimately fail one another, despite good intentions. Most memorably, she describes how easily students can feel defeated—by their real-world responsibilities and by the demands of college—and come to conclude that they just don't belong there after all.

Eye-opening even for experienced faculty and administrators, The College Fear Factor reveals how the traditional college culture can actually pose obstacles to students' success, and suggests strategies for effectively explaining academic expectations.

Why Don't Students Like School: A Cognitive Scientist Answers Questions About How the Mind Works and What It Means for the Classroom ReviewIf you are a teacher, like myself, you have doubtless been inundated by advice about teaching to multiple intelligences, active (rather than passive) learning, teaching students to think rather than memorize facts, etc. If so, then you can't afford to pass up this book, which will provide a very helpful guide as to why some of these well-intentioned ideas are wrong, and what it means for you as a teacher.
Dan Willingham's Why Don't Students Like School? is a book applying findings of cognitive psychology to the world of education. Sound a lot like Eric Jensen and his wildly popular book Teaching With the Brain in Mind? Well, unlike Jensen - who educators hear a lot about - Willingham is a PhD in cognitive psychology (while Jensen, who has a bachelors in English, is "working towards" a PhD from an online university, while making his real living as a motivational speaker). Long and short: Willingham is the real deal and I move to suggest that this book infinitely deserves more popularity amongst educators than anything Jensen has written.
Willingham's basic theme is that, despite everything you've heard, nothing works to increase student ability like factual learning and practice. In fact, one of his first ideas is to point out that what seperates the excellent student (or adult) from those performing less well is their ability to recall facts. The more facts you know about your subject, the more you can understand your subject because of significantly less energy spent on fact recall or retention. With facts learned to automaticity, more time can be spent on higher-order concept learning, and once that becomes automatic....etc.
While that may sound mundane, think of how many times you as a teacher have heard the idea of "rote memorization" and "regurgitation of fact" denegrated. Of course, Willingham is not advocating the strawman position that teachers do nothing but drill, drill, drill and enforce memorization of text passages. (No one actually holds that position!) What he reminds us, though, is that the critical thinking we hear so much about teaching our kids simply CANNOT happen without giving kids the requisite background info that must be employed to think critically. (One cannot critically reflect on whether the revolutionary war was justified without some big factual understanding of Colonial American and Empirial Britian, for example.)
Another big idea in educaiton that Willingham works to dispel is the idea that we all have different learning styles - auditory, visual, kinesthetic, etc. Cognitive science, in fact, has shown the opposite: with minor variation, we all learn very similarly. While I may have a better memory for visual phemonena than you (who may be better at remembering sounds), we remember IDEAS not through the media in which they were delivered, but by...thinking about them. When memorizing words and definitions, we are not being asked to memorize sounds or visuals, but ideas, and the fact that I am an auditory or visual learner does nothing to predict what presentation method will help me memorize the best. (The amount I studied, of course, will.)
I don't want to give the impression that Willingham's book is about bashing education icons and maxims. It is not It is a book for teachers designed to bring up ideas we may not have thought about, and to suggest how to apply these ideas to our classrooms. Each chapter is focused around a question ("Is Drilling Worth It?" "Why is it So Hard for Students to Understand Abstract Ideas?") and gives a detailed, but engaging, answer. At the end of each chapter, the author makes several concrete suggestions for how the answer can shape how we teach as well as reccomendations for further readings.
All in all, this is one of the single best education books I have read, and cannot wait to share it with fellow educators. As mentioned, I sincerely hope that this book becomes as widely devoured as those by Eric Jensen and Howard Gardner. Willingham offers a valuable and very constructive counterpoint, especially to Jensen's "brain based ways of learning."Why Don't Students Like School: A Cognitive Scientist Answers Questions About How the Mind Works and What It Means for the Classroom Overview

Fires in the Mind: What Kids Can Tell Us About Motivation and Mastery ReviewAfter teaching social studies courses for 25 years, my husband still looks for new sparks to energize his classes. I was delighted to give him Kathleen Cushman's latest book, which provides that kind of spark -- and more. The core idea is a simple one: In every classroom, we do what we do in order to develop mastery or expertise, in some area, in some way. With powerful and persuasive logic, the students who co-authored this book say "Then let's really do that."
One of the aspects John found most helpful was the list of "Habits of Experts." He has already used this with a high school class for a self-evaluation process. We both were struck by how matter-of-factly they accepted the premise that they were in the class to engage in the deliberate practice required to master specific skills--in their case, reading, writing, speaking, and thinking critically, in the context of history.

The book is well written and engaging, presenting student insights in a journey of discovery that celebrates learning. Kathleen Cushman has also has done her homework; her conclusions are well supported by research in the cognitive sciences. Of all the books about education and teaching we have encountered, John and I think this is one of the most valuable. We give teachers who learn from this book (and the accompanying web site of the same name) a "check plus"!

Multicultural Competence in Student Affairs (Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education) ReviewMulticultural competence is an innovative area of practice in the realm of student affairs. It is an area that allows for the practices of study, theory, services, and programs that are offered to college students to be enhanced in all major aspects of student life. Raechele Pope, Amy Reynolds, and John Mueller have put together a compelling and foundational case for that very statement in their book Multicultural Competence in Student Affairs.
The book is divided into two major parts that serve to holistically address the multifaceted issues confronting campus environments composed of multiple cultural influences, both contemporary and traditional. The book is well composed out of extensive research and experience from authors well founded and respected within the field of student affairs.
The first part of the book focuses on a dynamic model of student affairs that encompasses seven core competencies; which enrich performance and understanding of multicultural affairs.
1.Administrative and management
2.Theory and translation
3.Helping and interpersonal
4.Ethical and legal
5.Teaching and training
6.Assessment and evaluation
7.Multicultural awareness, knowledge, and skills
Each one is an area essential to ethical and efficacious practice within the realm of student affairs. Pope, Reynolds, and Mueller do a thorough job throughout the first part of the book of highlighting the intersecting points between each competency and multicultural affairs by showing where and how practicing multicultural competence can enhance each area. In addition to emphasizing the prominence of the multicultural competence in each area, the authors go so far as to offer good-practice examples, in multiple perspectives, for each field of practice. These good-practice examples equip the reader with real life instances that can and are faced daily within the realm of multicultural student affairs. In laying their words so deep within the realm of proven theory and actual practice the authors make a concrete foundation for their model of dynamic multicultural practice in student affairs.
In the second part of the book the authors turn their attention towards the implications of this model for practice and research, which is where the rubber really starts to meet the road. They examine the research of multicultural competence and expound upon its implications into the field of student affairs. Through an in depth presentation of case studies they spotlight the practical applications of the dynamic model and give way to the exponential potential therein. No attempt is made to sugar coat the process as working with multicultural affairs is as sticky a business as it can be rewarding. One point that is made clear above all is that a working knowledge of multicultural competencies is absolutely essential for any type of successful work in the realm of student affairs.
This book functions more than adequately as a handbook for any student affairs professional who is looking to become equipped with the ability to create the a positive multicultural environment on their campus. However one should not enter into this book expecting to arrive multiculturally competent on the other end. This work does not create multicultural competence in its readers but merely serves to advantageously provide the heuristic tools necessary for one to become so. I would recommend it as point of reference or starting block for one seeking to enter into the realm of multicultural enrichment in higher education.
Multicultural Competence in Student Affairs is both concise and effective with its message and would serve as an impressive addition to any collection of student affairs literature. I believe it belongs in the library of every student affairs professional.
Multicultural Competence in Student Affairs (Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education) OverviewToday's leaders in higher education are focused on creating multicultural campuses. However, most higher education and student affairs professionals receive limited training for understanding the complexity of multicultural issues. If multiculturalism is to flourish on college campuses, education professionals must develop the sensitivity and awareness in affirming relevant multicultural issues and develop the skills needed to offer meaningful services to all their students.Multicultural Competence in Student Affairs is a unique resource that offers student affairs practitioners and faculty a guide that features a model of core competencies that embraces the broad scope of multicultural issues including race, class, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, and abilities.

Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities (4th Edition) ReviewAs books intended to be textbooks go, this book by Westling and Fox covers the material without subjecting the reader to terminology which it does not explain.
It is broken up into well organized chapters, and reads well (meaning even a working professional can cover a chapter at a time without the book making them tired). It is not written in technical venacular, but in common sense terms most people interested in the subject can understand.
Unlike other books written in the field of special education it does not presume experience working with the children in question nor insult your intelligence if you are.
Most students should read this book before attempting any real fieldwork in the area of students with severe disabilities ( instead of as a textbook for a final class before student teaching as was my situation). It will give you a clearer view of the types of students you will be working with, and some of the ways to deal with them.Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities (4th Edition) OverviewThis updated editionof Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities, is written in a way that makes the most complex findings of research understandable and usable in the real educational world. Drawing on their own experiences, the authors bring a level of currency and reality to the book that is unparalleled. This book offers comprehensive coverage of all of the issues that are pertinent to teaching students with severe disabilities. The authors clearly and completely address both methodology and curriculum, presenting topics in the order in which a teacher would approach them: prior considerations, planning and assessment, general instructional procedures, and, finally, procedures targeted to learners with specific disabling conditions. In addition, they pay thoughtful attention to assessment, the role of paraprofessionals, and multicultural concerns.
