Teaching Literacy to Students With Significant Disabilities: Strategies for the K-12 Inclusive Classroom ReviewJune E. Downing's Teaching Literacy to Students With Significant Disabilities is a practical guide to opening one's mind regarding the definition of literacy, engaging all students in literacy activities, and keeping one's expectations appropriate for all learners, especially those with significant disabilities. Included in the book are current research findings, information regarding literacy goal setting for students with significant disabilities, and practical methods to adapting and modifying literacy to make it accessible for all learners.
After reading the first chapter of this book, I immediately committed to having it become a permanent staple on my professional bookshelf. Not only does it challenge educators in an ethical way to consider their own viewpoints, biases, etc., but it provides research, experience, and ideas to help educators adhere to best practice and include all learners in the beneficial and necessary acquisition of literacy skills. The section entitled, "What is Literacy?" (page 2) was an excellent way to introduce the concept. Before all students will be able to have access to true literacy instruction, teachers must challenge themselves and their definitions in order to truly do what's best for all of their students. Moreover, the section on "Identifying Literacy Goals" (page 38) provided a practical way to ensure that the goals I set for my students are in line with 1) their best interests, 2) their present capabilities, and 3) a realistic, practical, and beneficial end. This book is one that I can refer back to and use as a reference. The ideas and examples will be invaluable upon my entrance into a classroom with students who have significant disabilities!Teaching Literacy to Students With Significant Disabilities: Strategies for the K-12 Inclusive Classroom OverviewBreak down the barriers to successful literacy instruction and empower students with special needs with these insightful tips, tools, and examples.

Instruction of Students with Severe Disabilities (7th Edition) ReviewI've been doing aba-based curriculum for years now, and its always nice to have a book give you the basics as a refresher, I always seem to pick up something new when I go back. Definitely recommended for anyone designing curriculum and trying to learn about criterion based assessments.Instruction of Students with Severe Disabilities (7th Edition) OverviewThe seventh edition of this widely-adopted text for special educators addresses the full-range of curriculum and instructional topics involved in educating individuals with moderate, severe, and multiple disabilities. Evidence-based practices are presented in clearly-defined ways so that teachers can easily understand the research presented and apply it in the real classroom. All chapters in the book are unique, written by leaders in the field known for their research and writing on the specific topics. Case studies of students are applied to chapter content in vignettes, tables, and figures found throughout the chapters, and the textbook rests on a solid evidence-base with research citations provided. The new edition features many new updates including: a greater emphasis on teaching students with autism; six new chapters authored by experts in the field; more information on teaching methods supported by research, peer support, teaching academic skills, the process for planning and implementing instruction within general education classrooms, transition planning, and alternate assessment. All core chapters have been strengthened and expanded, and PowerPoint slides are now available for course instructors.

Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities (4th Edition) ReviewAs books intended to be textbooks go, this book by Westling and Fox covers the material without subjecting the reader to terminology which it does not explain.
It is broken up into well organized chapters, and reads well (meaning even a working professional can cover a chapter at a time without the book making them tired). It is not written in technical venacular, but in common sense terms most people interested in the subject can understand.
Unlike other books written in the field of special education it does not presume experience working with the children in question nor insult your intelligence if you are.
Most students should read this book before attempting any real fieldwork in the area of students with severe disabilities ( instead of as a textbook for a final class before student teaching as was my situation). It will give you a clearer view of the types of students you will be working with, and some of the ways to deal with them.Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities (4th Edition) OverviewThis updated editionof Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities, is written in a way that makes the most complex findings of research understandable and usable in the real educational world. Drawing on their own experiences, the authors bring a level of currency and reality to the book that is unparalleled. This book offers comprehensive coverage of all of the issues that are pertinent to teaching students with severe disabilities. The authors clearly and completely address both methodology and curriculum, presenting topics in the order in which a teacher would approach them: prior considerations, planning and assessment, general instructional procedures, and, finally, procedures targeted to learners with specific disabling conditions. In addition, they pay thoughtful attention to assessment, the role of paraprofessionals, and multicultural concerns.
