Macroscale And Microscale Organic Experiments: Text with Student CD-ROM ReviewI received this required text in prime shape from Amazon.com, first. Amazon always does such a wonderful job of getting you the product you need in good shape when you need it. The product itself? Very good explanations of how the glassware goes together, what to do, how to do it, and all with a good explanation of WHY. WHAT you are doing, WHY you are doing it, and HOW it works are chief among the reasons I like the explanations of the experiments. It does not give TOO MUCH away, however. You do still have to perform the experiments and come to a conclusion as to what the UNKNOWN was, if that happens to be the case, and other mysteries such as that, but in terms of learning, it is excellent! And the experiments are neatly divided into the Macroscale and the Microscale procedures. This is obvious, but it should be in this case. Great resource for O-Chem students!Macroscale And Microscale Organic Experiments: Text with Student CD-ROM Overview
This flexible, accurate manual includes both macroscale and microscale procedures for each experiment. The level and writing style of the text, which emphasizes biochemical and biomedical applications, make it ideally suited for the mainstream organic chemistry laboratory.

A student CD-ROM includes videos and photos related to the material in the text. Videos feature the exact glassware required for each experiment and demonstrate techniques for how to conduct experiments successfully and safely. Photos show lab equipment set-ups.
"In this Experiment" is a new feature that appears before every microscale experiment. It presents the objective of the experiment and keeps students from getting bogged down in the minute details of experimental procedures.

Business and Administrative Communication with Student Toolbox ReviewKitty Locker's Business and Administrative Communication, 5th ed. is the most considerate educational text I've reviewed for my business writing course. My classes typically include upper level English majors, but it is not uncommon for business majors and ESL students to register too. This student diversity usually presents difficulties because their writing abilities vary tremendously. Thankfully, I found Locker's text. It provides examples of real-life business writing and Internet communication situations highlighted with graphics, sidebars, tables and pictures colorfully presented. This textual consideration, I found, enables students to grasp both the theory and the reality of business communication outside their academic walls.Business and Administrative Communication with Student Toolbox Overview

Real Science-4-Kids Chemistry Level 1 Student Text ReviewI am using this book to teach a study club with girls ages 8-12. I am very pleased with the format, it is easy for all of us to use. Teacher prep. time is minimal. The other instructor has a strong background in chemistry so at first we relied on her but that background is not necessary to sucessfully use this material. I appreciate that although the text is simplified for the age group it still uses proper terminology and is not "dumbed down". The page layout is attractive and easy to sort out. (Not too much crammed into the pages.) Because we have the time and flexibility we do add related experiments from other sources but the provided lab work stands on its own very well.Real Science-4-Kids Chemistry Level 1 Student Text OverviewReal Science-4-Kids Chemistry, Level I,written at a 4th and 5th grade reading level, introduces children to college-level chemistry concepts such as the atom and periodic table, molecular bonding and chemical reactions. acid-base reactions, mixtures and separating mixtures, and large molecules such as carbohydrates, polymers and enzymes, and includes a glossary/index.

Chemistry: The Central Science W/ Student Mediapak Pkg ReviewI wrote the review below for the previous edition (9), and having seen the tenth edition, most of my subjects of complaints and praises pretty much remain the same.
First off, having maintained contact with my freshman year chem prof, I have to say that she still tells the students that they can easily get away with buying the previous edition. Interestingly enough, back when I was taking the course and the 10th wasn't even released yet, she told us we can get away with using the 8th. I have not seen the 8th though, so no comments on that. So it seems as if there are no major overhauls from the 8th-10th editions as far as my prof's concerned.
I say this is a solid text primarily because of the glut of problems for you to practice on, and the nice flow of information through the chapters. The text is written with clarity in mind, and with clarity it does convey its topics. With well-placed worked sample problems and excellent charts and diagrams, this is a great book to have in hand if you're taking a college-level chemistry course.
However, this book has its limitations in that there are several topics that are covered at the college level that are not really expounded on by the book. For example, the text gives a half-page introduction on semiconductors and how electron excitation works in semiconductors ; we did one full lecture on it. Furthermore, some of the problems that hit you in the form of the professor's custom-made, self-written problem sets occasionally involve problem solving methods that are not even covered in the book. I experienced a fair share of this when I saw application questions that involved a lot more variables than any of the book's questions involved.
This brings me to talk about my last perceived limitation of the textbook: its lack of good application / integrative exercises. I like the book's armada of additional exercises at the end of the chapter, but I think a better textbook should include more application problems - sort of like 'problem-based learning', if that's a better way to put it. A good example would be the types of questions you can expect to see on a final exam - questions that implicitly expect you to apply all sorts of concepts obtained from the whole chapter, and possibly even concepts from previous chapters - to solve a real world problem.
To conclude, the pros of this book include its clarity in explaining concepts, the decent flow from topic to topic, and its solid arsenal of practice problems and worked sample problems. The cons include its lack of application problems (problem-based learning), need for more in-depth discussions of some topics, and need for more problem solving strategies. Overall a great text, but a better text can bring my B up to an A in this class.Chemistry: The Central Science W/ Student Mediapak Pkg OverviewFor two-semester courses in General Chemistry. Chemistry: The Central Science is the most trusted book on the market--its scientific accuracy, clarity, innovative pedagogy, functional problem-solving and visuals set this book apart.Brown, LeMay, and Bursten teach students the concepts and skills they need without overcomplicating the subject.A comprehensive media package that works in tandem with the text helps students practice and learn while providing instructors the tools they need to succeed.

Technology of Machine Tools with Student Workbook ReviewI have the older version of this book, which was supplied to me when I took a machinist pre-apprenticeship course, and I am about to buy this newer version.
The book is not too wordy, making it easy to understand the basic concepts of machining and the terminology that goes along. It also clearly explains how to use lathes, milling machines, measuring equipment and other basic machine shop equipment. I have not yet read the newer version, but the older book was a little bit lacking in the use of more complicated machines such as horizontal and vertical boring machines, which an advanced user might be interested in. Also there was only one chapter on cnc machines, which did not go into any great depth.Technology of Machine Tools with Student Workbook OverviewTechnology of Machine Tools 6e provides state-of-the-art training for using machine tools in manufacturing technology, including up-to-date coverage of computer numerical control (CNC). It includes an overview of machine trades and career opportunities followed by theory and application. The text is structured to provide coverage of tools and measurement, machining tools and procedures, drilling and milling machines, computer-aided machining, and metallurgy. There is expanded coverage of computer-related technologies, including computer numerical control (CNC) and computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM).

Molecular Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions, Student Edition ReviewOut of all the "graduate level" textbooks I've searched for and encountered, Fleming's "Molecular Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions" is, in my opinion, the very best a graduate student/lecturer/researcher currently has access too. I should elaborate greatly on that, but put simply the fundamental understanding of modern organic chemistry necessary is provided in this relatively short book. In other words, buy it--- the content and knowledge the book provides (I think) most committee members would expect you to gain/know/understand from your first year and on to your PhD candidacy exam. Undoubtedly then, this book is a very useful asset to your chemical-library. Of course the reading of primary literature and utilizing other sources is inevitable. The text may be disappointing to those looking for elegant synthetic examples presented throughout(*), but will most certainly please those ultimately faced with learning the background absolutely essential for planning and understanding complex organic synthesis.
The outline and flow of the book is very appropriately planned and reads as if you were in Fleming's lecture course. The only complaint I have is the illustrations of structures and orbitals aren't as beautifully drawn (or large) compared to his classic Frontier Orbitals & Organic Chemical Reactions (1976). Also, the ever increasing proper use of color (cf. Kurti & Czako's Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis, and even current journal articles) was not adopted in this text, which I think is mildly unfortunate; but, these are very minor issues. For those familiar with the old, this new book is basically an updated and expanded second edition of the classic. There is much greater scope and discussion applied to ionic, radical and photochemical reactions. Fleming includes much greater detail concerning stereochemical events and consequences with very readable discussions and a pleasant touch of historic flair. For example, the Felkin-Anh/Cram models, Baldwin's Rules are all wonderfully described along with an excellent discourse of the Woodward-Hoffmann Rules. So, of course, the Pericyclic reaction chapter is still amazing/unbeatable.
I purchased both the student edition and the reference edition. The textual body is the same in both versions containing the same information with the following differences: (a) the student edition is less expensive by ~$68 and has practice problems at the end of each chapter, with literature references the student can locate and access to find answers/discussions to; (b) the reference edition does not provide practice problems, but, as the name implies, contains exactly 1191 references which are exceedingly useful for the reader to dive in further when necessary. Because this is a more advanced text overall it begs for further exploration, which is why I believe the reference edition to be more valuable and therefore would encourage PhD-students/research chemists to "splurge" for the more expensive hard-covered reference edition and find equally useful problems elsewhere (i.e. Evans' Challenging Problems website). Either way, though, I cannot recommend this "updated" book enough.
* = For those unaware, Fleming published a text (1973)Selected Organic Syntheses a Guidebook for Organic Chemists on selected organic syntheses that may be worth your while; also, many texts regarding elegant syntheses are out there including the venerable Classics in Total Synthesis: Targets, Strategies, Methods series. In addition, I've found having access to D. Boger's (Scripps / $) Modern Organic Synthesis: Lecture Notes and D. A. Evans' C206 (Harvard / Free) lecture notes, combined with the current book under review, are the best weapons for passing the first year/level of graduate school. They help by establishing a solid foundation necessary towards advancing a career in organic chemistry.Molecular Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions, Student Edition OverviewWinner of the PROSE Award for Chemistry & Physics 2010
Acknowledging the very best in professional and scholarly publishing, the annual PROSE Awards recognise publishers' and authors' commitment to pioneering works of research and for contributing to the conception, production, and design of landmark works in their fields. Judged by peer publishers, librarians, and medical professionals, Wiley are pleased to congratulate Professor Ian Fleming, winner of the PROSE Award in Chemistry and Physics for Molecular Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions.

Molecular orbital theory is used by chemists to describe the arrangement of electrons in chemical structures. It is also a theory capable of giving some insight into the forces involved in the making and breaking of chemical bonds—the chemical reactions that are often the focus of an organic chemist's interest. Organic chemists with a serious interest in understanding and explaining their work usually express their ideas in molecular orbital terms, so much so that it is now an essential component of every organic chemist's skills to have some acquaintance with molecular orbital theory.

Molecular Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions is both a simplified account of molecular orbital theory and a review of its applications in organic chemistry; it provides a basic introduction to the subject and a wealth of illustrative examples. In this book molecular orbital theory is presented in a much simplified, and entirely non-mathematical language, accessible to every organic chemist, whether student or research worker, whether mathematically competent or not. Topics covered include:

· Molecular Orbital Theory

· Molecular Orbitals and the Structures of Organic Molecules

· Chemical Reactions — How Far and How Fast

· Ionic Reactions — Reactivity

· Ionic Reactions — Stereochemistry

· Pericyclic Reactions

· Radical Reactions

· Photochemical Reactions

Molecular Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions: Student Edition is an invaluable first textbook on this important subject for students of organic, physical organic and computational chemistry.

The Reference Edition edition takes the content and the same non-mathematical approach of the Student Edition, and adds extensive extra subject coverage, detail and over 1500 references. The additional material adds a deeper understanding of the models used, and includes a broader range of applications and case studies. Providing a complete in-depth reference for a more advanced audience, this edition will find a place on the bookshelves of researchers and advanced students of organic, physical organic and computational chemistry. Further information can be viewed here.

"These books are the result of years of work, which began as an attempt to write a second edition of my 1976 book Frontier Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions. I wanted to give a rather more thorough introduction to molecular orbitals, while maintaining my focus on the organic chemist who did not want a mathematical account, but still wanted to understand organic chemistry at a physical level. I'm delighted to win this prize, and hope a new generation of chemists will benefit from these books." - Professor Ian Fleming

Real Science-4-Kids Chemistry Pre-Level I Student Text ReviewI am a homeschooling mom with a science background. My daughter was asking many chemistry questions but I thought she would be too young to understand acids, bases, DNA, polymers, etc. at her age (6yo 2nd grader). I was wrong. The way things are presented in this book makes teaching tough concepts simple to this age group. My daughter especially enjoyed how atoms are displayed and used throughout the book. They are made to be almost like a cartoon character. They have the correct amount of arms depending on how many bonds they are capable of (hydrogen has one arm, carbon has four, and so on). They also have conversations such as saying hello or goodbye to other atoms during reactions. This was my daughters favorite unit for the year. By the time we had completed the book, she had a good understanding of the concepts and was able not only to present acids and bases at a science fair, but also field additional questions afterwards. Others who saw her work told her they did not understand what she was talking about until they were in high school. The reason I give this only 4 stars is because of the accompanying lab book and teachers manual (available through the publishers website). In order to get the most from this book, the labs really need to be performed as well. This book, although good on it's own, does not have the same impact as it does after the experiments. However, I found the teacher's manual was not quite up to the quality of this book (I was glad I had a science background). Despite this downfall, I would still highly recommend this book (and corresponding lab book / teacher's manual).Real Science-4-Kids Chemistry Pre-Level I Student Text OverviewReal Science-4-Kids Chemistry Pre-Level I introduces young students to college level chemistry subjects, such as atoms, molecules, chemical reactions, acids and bases, mixtures and large molecules such as proteins and DNA.This book is written for young elementary students in grades K-3.
