O Tempora O Mores: Cicero's Catilinarian Orations, A Student Edition with Historical Essays ReviewThis is a welcome tool for the teacher and student of Latin. I recently studied Cicero's Pro Archia and In Catalinam I for a class, and I wanted to read the other three over break. Shapiro's volume has been paydirt. Her historical essays are excellent - they would be quite appropriate to use in any classics or history course, besides being great background to the text itself.
The Latin is presented by itself, with no grammar or vocabulary on the same page. The commentary comes at the end and there is a full glossary in the back. The commentary is primarily focused on syntax (how do chunks of words fit together) and also gives historical and cultural information where relevant (very helpful). The commentary glosses a few words occasionally, but far less than some will be accustomed to.
I wasn't sure I liked not having on-page commentary and/or vocabulary at first (why not have at least difficult vocabulary glossed on the page to eliminate always flipping to the back?), but I have ended up liking it. Why? Because it absolutely forces the reader to stick in the Latin text. Over the long run, I found myself pausing longer to ponder Cicero's sometimes wandering (aka periodic) sentences before flipping to the back for assistance, or thinking twice about vocabulary I was uncertain of and trying to guess based on the etymology or context. This guesswork, combined with the ability to look it up either in the commentary or full vocabulary, ultimately makes one a better reader of Latin.
I can heartily recommend this volume to anyone desiring an intermediate level text. It would be quite effective in either a classroom setting or independently.O Tempora O Mores: Cicero's Catilinarian Orations, A Student Edition with Historical Essays Overview
In 63 b.c., Lucius Sergius Catilina, a Roman aristocrat, formed a conspiracy to overthrow the Roman Republic. Cicero, who was consul that year, exposed the plot and documented his defeat of the conspiracy in his Orations against Catiline. The First Catilinarian Oration is well known and deservedly famous. Scholars are familiar with the other three speeches, but few students know them. This lapse is regrettable. The Third Oration is a fast-paced courtroom drama, and the Second and Fourth Orations provide critical information about this key event in Roman history. Susan O. Shapiro here makes all Cicero's Catilinarian Orations accessible to the intermediate Latin student.

O Tempora! O Mores! is designed to fit a variety of pedagogical approaches. Professors can assign any of the Catilinarian Orations independently or assign excerpts from several of the speeches. Shapiro's historical essays bring a new dimension to Latin study, explaining the history and politics behind the texts. The essays are divided into short sections that can be assigned individually for class discussion. The volume is further amplified by a vocabulary, maps, a bibliography, and appendices.

The Student's Catullus (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture) ReviewLearned, exciting and accessible, Garrison's edition of Catullus is the best in over a century (since Elmer Merrill's Carmina in 1893). Garrison has decided not to obstruct a classic's own text, instead allowing Gaius Valerius Catullus to speak for himself--yet offering grammatical advice, relevant historical and political information, and commentary only when absolutely needed. Thanks, Daniel! I'll be keeping my edition for a long time. Here the text and the Poet are given the highest consideration.
Even a Latin scholar who's had the opportunity to take only 100 level classes will be able to read and enjoy all 116 poems--and that's important.
But remember--there's nothing wrong reading Catullus, or any Roman author, in translation. Some translations of Catullus are a little dense for first-timers, but Goold and Cornish's are really good. The Student's Catullus (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture) OverviewThough his audacious erotic and satrical verses survived the Middle Ages in only a single copy, Catullus has become in this century a standard author in the college Latin curriculum, ranking with Virgil, Horace, and Ovid. This new, annotated Latin edition now makes these famous poems more accessible than ever to students of Catullus' own language. The Student's Catullus places its emphasis on understanding the original Latin text rather than merely translating it into English. A complete Latin-English vocabulary explains the meaning of Catullus' words; notes to each poem illuminate the meaning of his language, with explanations of word choice, word order, sound effects, and metric artistry. Historical and literary allusions are also explained, with the result that students enter deeper into the poet's world than the best English translation can suggest. The Student's Catullus makes it clear why we still read Catullus in Latin.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Prentice Hall Biology (Student Edition) ReviewThe previous reviewer was complaining about a shipping error, not a comment on the text itself. There is a huge and amazing lab book that goes with the text and that must have been what had been delivered. The book that goes with this ISBN number is a terrific Biology text. I researched several high school biology books, and this is the best I found. The writing is clear and makes difficult concepts easy to understand and the graphics make it easy to read. Add the biology lab book and it makes a complete high school biology program. I would highly recommend this for any homeschooling family.Prentice Hall Biology (Student Edition) Overview

And Still We Rise: The Trials and Triumphs of Twelve Gifted Inner-city High School Students ReviewThis gripping immersion into inner city school life makes the perfect companion read to Tracy Kidder's "Among Schoolchildren". From a nice, safe, concerned, caring enviornment, where the problems are understandable and manageable in "Among Schoolchildren"; to a place where success is measured not merely by acheivement but by the tremendous obstacles students must overcome merely to be in school, in this gripping, similarly styled work. The two books are a startling picture of the tremendous gulf of opportunity and enviornment at the spectrum ends of our society.
I strongly recommend both books, to everyone; not just parents, teachers or those who are usually associated with "education" interests. "And Still We Rise.." is not merely a vision of a brutal social/educational reality that must be addressed, but a poignant drama, as well. The young people whose stories are followed are the heroes of the most brutal battles raging today; crime, drugs, racism, and a culture of despair and degradation. These are the best and the brightest ... they are forced to face obstacles that should be reserved only for those who have transgressed horribly against society.
The incidental intrusion of the writer into this jouranlistic narrative is the only jarring note to be found in an otherwise seamless view. The unfortunate, even tragic circumstances that cause that intrusion, however, are understandable, from a human standpoint, even if they are inexcusable as viewed through the prism of journalistic purity.
An emmimently readable, engaging work. Recommended. And Still We Rise: The Trials and Triumphs of Twelve Gifted Inner-city High School Students Overview

Understanding Hamlet: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents (The Greenwood Press "Literature in Context" Series) ReviewThis book presents Hamlet as Shakespeare's Everest, and Corum is your experienced serpa. I used this book to teach Hamlet to 9th graders and to expand my personal understanding of the play. The peak of the play is a crucial plea against tortured youth turing to violence; Corum's work is essential for your journey.Understanding Hamlet: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents (The Greenwood Press "Literature in Context" Series) OverviewShakespeare's Hamlet, regarded by many as "the world's most famous play by the world's most famous writer," is one of the most complex, demanding, discussed, and influential literary texts in English. As a means of access to this play, this unique collection of primary materials and commentary will help student and teacher explore historical, literary, theatrical, social, and cultural issues related to the play. In an approach unique for this series, Corum guides the reader through a literary analysis of Hamlet's options. He examines the popular theatres of the day in which Shakespeare and his company first produced Hamlet and discusses the genre of tragedy in which it is written. Through judicious selection of primary historical documents, the work provides contexts for understanding Hamlet's melancholy, the ghost of Hamlet's father, the theme of revenge, and Hamlet's feigned madness. Chapters on Gertrude and Ophelia illuminate these characters in the context of the play and early modern English culture. Each chapter contains a variety of materials, many of which are not readily available elsewhere: essays, poems, histories, treatises, official documents, stories, religious tracts, homilies, memoirs, engravings, village records, and fifteen illustrations. An explanatory introduction precedes each document. Each chapter concludes with study questions, topics for written and oral exploration, and a list of suggested readings. This casebook will enrich the reader's understanding of the play and the context in which it was written.

Search for the Golden Moon Bear (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12) ReviewI was a big big fan of Sy Montgomery's children's book, "The Tarantula Scientist", you know. Her insightful knowledge of just what kinds of details kids find exciting or interesting as regards huge hairy spiders was right on the money. The book was one of those tales that I find myself thrusting into the arms of already overburdened grade school teachers at the local library in which I work. So when I discovered that she had written ANOTHER non-fiction children's text in 2004, I snapped it up right quick. It looked great too. A whole big beautiful book about the discovery of what the author initially believes to be a brand new species of bear. What's not to like? But as I read the tale, I became increasingly disappointed. Montgomery is excellent at describing the different kinds of bears there are in the world and the techniques scientists use to identify new bears the world over. I liked the photographs and the wonderful information about the animals of Cambodia. But when it comes to some of the book's most basic details, Montgomery grows sloppy. She confuses the reader with vague terms and doesn't clarify why some discoveries are important and some merely interesting. I grew so confused while reading this book that I found myself wondering how the heck a kid was supposed to figure out whether the author was referring to one bear or another. Even the photographs remain uncaptioned, or captioned only randomly. Unlike her magnificent "Tarantula Scientist", this book is a mish-mash of poor editing. One suspects she merely took the adult version of it (which came out in 2002 and sports the same name) and winnowed it down for kids without taking much time to iron out the problems. The result is a book that could have been priceless and is, instead, merely okay.
The premise is very exciting. Sy Montgomery (who is such an essential player in this book that she never hesitates to place herself in the center of the action) was canoeing down the Amazon River with scientist Dr. Gary Galbreath when she first heard about the mythical golden moon bear he once saw. It was more than fifteen years ago in the little town of Yunnan that he saw a bear unlike any other ever found before. Though he was unable to find a match for it, and never returned to the region, he always dreamt of going back and finding the animal. When Galbreath's sighting is echoed by Montgomery's friend Sun Hean, the three decide to take a special trip to find the bear and get it down in the history books. You might expect the rest of the book to be an arduous retelling of how they finally found the elusive bear and plucked some hairs for reference, but actually they find one by page 29. Pages 30-77 are just follow-up as the crew finds more bears, plucks more hairs, and discovers some surprising facts about this little known animal.
The problem I had with the book began on page 12. It is here that Montgomery makes the very smart move of including a list of different bears around the world, along with photographs of each and every one. These eight species of bear include pandas, grizzlies, and sloth bears, as well as both sun AND moon bears. It was the moon bears that began my trouble. They're mentioned right at the start. Ursus thibetanus. The moon bear, we learn, has a crescent-moon-shaped patch of white on its chest. It lives in many parts of Asia and has been known to learn how to ride bikes and skates. Fair enough. The problem comes when Montgomery carries on with her story. Now you'll remember that this entire book is called, "Search For the Golden Moon Bear". Well, Montgomery becomes exceedingly sloppy after a while. Instead of referring to the bear she seeks as a "golden moon bear" she sometimes shortens it to just "moon bear". Of which, you'll recall, there is already a species. In fact, the book ALSO looks at real moon bears, so that you can never tell whether or not the bears being addressed are just your average already discovered "moon bears" or "golden moon bears". About pages 54-55 she so intertwines the two species that I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was going on. If Montgomery had even included a picture of an average moon bear in the aforementioned "eight species of bear" section, it would've been fine. But the moon bear is the only animal NOT included in that section (with the obvious exclusion of the golden moon bear as well).
It makes for infuriating reading. All the more so when you consider how interesting the book is in other portions. I loved the section on large mammals recently discovered in Cambodia. Montgomery does away with the myth that "everything has already been discovered". She mentions the fanged deer recently found and the rabbits striped like zebras (not shown in a photograph, unfortunately). She even talks about the Indochinese warty hog that was accidentally eaten by a team of scientists in 1995 and has yet to be photographed. Even the sections of this book that talk about DNA are fascinating. Sadly, whatever discoveries made are obscured by the lackadaisical names thrown hither and thither. I couldn't figure out what was going on by the end, and I'm certain that a ten-year-old in my shoes, however intelligent they might be, would feel the same.
The book is a perfect waste. There's so much good in it. So much worth reading up on. I mean, the world needs more fascinating scientific non-fiction books for kids. Especially ones that include so many female scientists. But when the writing suffers, the book suffers. So it is with a heavy heart that I tell you that this is not Montgomery's best. I suggest you seek out her "Tarantula Scientist" and read that instead. As for "Golden Moon Bear", my hope is that subsequent publications in the future will erase all the problems I've mentioned here and make the book the beautiful story it deserves to be. Otherwise, it's just not worth the price.

Understanding Pride and Prejudice: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents (The Greenwood Press "Literature in Context" Series) ReviewI did not use this book in the manner intended, i.e., as a textbook for literary studies, but I found it very valuable for my own personal instruction. Unlike Cliff Notes and some other literary studies, it focuses on understanding the context of the novel, not in-depth exploration of its themes, writing style, etc. I learned things that I had not known from the previous twenty or so books that I had read on the era and on Jane Austen. Given the debates over JA's "failure" to discuss contemporary politics, it was quite interesting to read that literature was heavily censored at athe time, and she would not have been able to comment freely, even if she had wanted to. The book's intended audience of young adults has resulted in its being clearly, but not simplistically written.
The book should be very helpful for anyone intending to do serious research on the issues that are covered (see table of contents). There is an at least one-page bibliography on every topic covered, which should provide a jump-start into the literature.
Teachman begins with a brief but excellent literary analysis of Pride & Prejudice. I particularly enjoyed her comments on Mr. Bennet. Although JA delineated his failings as a parent, I think that readers (and perhaps his creator) tend to be so taken with his wit and charm as to gloss over them. If Mrs. Bennet wasn't naturally fretful, living with such an unsupportive, indeed quietly hostile spouse, facing widowhood on her dowry with no provision for her five daughters would fray stronger nerves than hers.
The main body of the book is composed of excerpts from various writings contemporary with Jane Austen. Teachman first gives a general overview of the subject of the chapter, then an introduction to each author, followed by the excerpts of their writing. There is a brief summation at the end of the chapter. These are fascinating as first hand experiences of both thought and writing style. There are a few that I would like to read in full. The chapter includes a list of suggested questions and projects. I hated these things as a student, and as an adult, I enjoyed skipping them.
The last chapter "Pride & Prejudice: Issues in the 1980s & 1990s" considers our continued fascination with Jane Austen's work and the issues that are still current today. I was very impressed with this chapter. Teachman was able to calmly and nonjudgementally discuss marriage, romance, sex and celibacy, subjects that are so emotional fraught that most people cannot mention them without ranting.
The book includes both a detailed table of contents and index for ease of access. There are three illustrations: one from an illustrated edition of P&P, one of a portrait of Jane Austen based on CAssandra's drawing, and a picture of Chawton Cottage.
I will certainly look for Teachman's general companion to Jane Austen and keep this series in mind for other favorite works.

How Dinosaurs Took Flight: The Fossils, the Science, What We Think We Know, and Mysteries Yet Unsolved (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12 (Awards)) ReviewThis slim (64 pages) volume carries a hefty price tag, but at this point it's worth it, because there isn't a lot on the market covering the dinosaurs-with-feathers subject (so far as I know). Dr. Xu Xing, who wrote the foreward, is a notable character in the unfolding drama of feathered fossils being found in China.
I consider this book a bit radical in that it runs with the theory of dinosaurs being birds (or was it vice versa?), calling them all dinosaurs: nonavian dinosaurs for the "dinosaurs" and avian dinosaurs for the "birds." It is written in a fairly simple and straightforward manner; I think it is a YA title although I mostly bought it for myself (as a parent having just taken the kids to see the James Gurney's Dinotopia exhibit and activites at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge MA). I think one might want to read it with a child, so that, for example, a younger reader might not end up being teased for insisting that birds are dinosaurs. The theory is out there, it's current, but it's not completely validated yet. I would like to see more well illustrated books on the subject, but this one is a great start. How Dinosaurs Took Flight: The Fossils, the Science, What We Think We Know, and Mysteries Yet Unsolved (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12 (Awards)) OverviewHow did dinosaurs get feathers? How did they start flying? What use were feathers to dinosaurs that didn't fly? Chris Sloan's 2000 book Feathered Dinosaurs introduced kids to the radical idea that some dinosaurs had feathers and that birds are, in fact, a subset of dinosaurs. In How Dinosaurs Took Flight, Sloan returns to these ancient feathered creatures to introduce kids to the fascinating new finds—including a Tyrannosaur with feathers and a dinosaur with not just two but four wings. The author focuses on the tough new questions scientists are asking right now, the evidence they've gathered, the hypotheses that are developing from the evidence, and the unknowns that remain. This book will be the most up-to-date children's book on this topic on the market.

Longman Handbook for Writers and Readers, The (with MyCompLab NEW with Pearson eText Student Access Code Card) (5th Edition) ReviewI bought this book for an English class last winter. Now, I'm a music major and I have tons of music books, but I must say that this is the most useful book I have ever bought. Everything is explained in a concise and direct manner, and is easy to find. Whenever I'm in doubt of how to use a punctuation mark, or how to phrase something correctly I always come to this book. Whenever I have to write a paper, this book is right next to me. I love that its relatively small, too. Great book. Highly recomended.Longman Handbook for Writers and Readers, The (with MyCompLab NEW with Pearson eText Student Access Code Card) (5th Edition) OverviewA comprehensive reference to grammar, writing, research, and documentation, The Longman Handbook offers a unique emphasis on how to write for different audiences – academic, workplace, and public. Understanding The Scarlet Letter: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents (The Greenwood Press "Literature in Context" Series) ReviewThis book is one of the most fascinating books for studying the Scarlet Letter. I had to write my college research paper on the Scarlet Letter and I went to several libraries collecting books for this paper. All of these books had journal articles that pertained to my subject, but I soon realized that ALL I NEEDED WAS THIS ONE BOOK TO COMPLETE MY PAPER. This book not only discusses the themes in the book but it gives complete background knowledge on the puritans, analysis of characters, plot information, and articles that relate puritanist views to modern day events. I love this book and highly recommend it for people studying the Scarlet Letter.Understanding The Scarlet Letter: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents (The Greenwood Press "Literature in Context" Series) OverviewSexual misconduct of society's leaders, the plight of single mothers, the separation of church and state -- all are burning issues of the 1990s which sparked outrage and controversy 150 years earlier in The Scarlet Letter. Now, no study of American history is complete without thorough examination of Nathaniel Hawthorne's timeless masterpiece. This multidisciplinary study of the novel contains historical documents, collateral readings, and commentary. In short, it is the ideal companion for students who wish to fully understand the novel in the context of its time, and to unlock its current relevance. Among the materials are original 17th-century documents that illuminate Puritan attitudes and bring the Salem witchcraft trials to life, private journals, historical reports, 19th-century magazine articles, sketches, and newspaper stories. Many of the documents are available in no other printed form. Not only do these materials provide a taste of 17th-century Puritan culture, but they also glimpse into Hawthorne's mind as he comes to terms with his witch-hunting ancestors and his vocation. Most importantly, this casebook contemplates the many issues raised by The Scarlet Letter which inextricably link the 17th-century Puritans to the 19th century culture of Hawthorne to the present. Each section of this casebook contains study questions, topic ideas for written or oral expression, and lists of further readings for examining the issues raised by the novel. Designed as a resource for students, teachers, and library media specialists, the volume is cloth bound and printed on high quality acid-free paper, making it an excellent addition to every library collection. A literary analysis focusing on the issues raised by the novel opens the casebook. In Part Two, the Puritan's code of crime and punishment and the basic tenets of their belief are analyzed through original 17th-century diaries, letters, and testimony from the Salem witch trials. Part Three examines the novel's introductory essay, the autobiographical "The Custom House," which finds Hawthorne grappling with the role his ancestors played in persecuting the Quakers and the Salem witches, as well as his own internal conflict over his vocation as a fiction writer. The moral attitudes at the time of Hawthorne's controversial work are also examined through reviews published at the time of publication. Part Four draws connections between two issues raised by the novel - the unwed mother and the lapsed minister - that remain controversial today and features recent news articles on these issues. A glossary of terms and a topic and person index complete this latest addition to Greenwood Press' "Literature in Context" series.

William James : Writings 1878-1899 : Psychology, Briefer Course / The Will to Believe / Talks to Teachers and Students / Essays (Library of America) ReviewThe Library of America has performed a great service by making the writings of the American psychologist and philosopher William James (1842 -- 1910) available to a large audience in two large volumes. Volume 1, which I am reviewing here, consists of James's earlier writings from the period 1878 -- 1899. It includes the "Psychology: Briefer Course" (1892), the "Will to Believe and other Essays in Popular Philosophy" (1897), "Talks to Teachers on Psychology and to Students on Some of Life's Ideals" (1899), and selected essays. The second volume of the series includes James' major works from 1900 until his death, including the "Varieties of Religious Experience", "Pragmatism", and "A Pluralistic Universe, and additional essays. The two collections do not include James's monumental "Principles of Psychology" (1890), his first important book and the product of twelve years of effort. The "Principles" would require a separate volume of its own. But they include virtually all James's other essential writings and offer an excellent way for the reader to get to know James first-hand and in-depth.
In reading both volumes, I was left with the impression of the continuity of James's themes and thought. James was trained as an MD, the only academic degree he ever received. He began with an interest in Darwin's theory of evolution and in physiology. He soon expanded his interests and became an important founder of modern psychology. His later work develops philosophies of pragmatism, radical empiricism, and pluralism.
This collection of James's early writings shows that James's philosophical concerns pervaded his writing, including his scientific writing, from the outset. James was an empiricist and a scientist committed, as the "Psychology" and several of the essays in this volume show to careful and painstaking scientific research. But James was far from advocating a philosophy of materialism or what today is called scientism or reductionism. Throughout his life, he was preoccupied with showing the complex and many-faceted character of human life. The determinism of the scientific method, for James, did not negate human purpose, activity, and free will. And, most importantly, for James, it did not negate the possibility of religious life or belief in God. In his famous essay "The Will to Believe" included in this volume (which would have better been called "The Right to Believe") and in its companion essays, James argued at length that the teachings and method of science did not destroy the possibility of religion.
In approaching this volume of James's early writings, it might be advantageous for the new reader to distinguish between James's more accessible, popular efforts and his more technical works. An excellent place for the new reader to start in this volume would be with the three essays to students in the "Talks to Teachers and to Students." The essay "On a Certain Blindness in Human Beings" is a wonderful brief introduction to James as it shows eloquently how every person tends to see the world through his own eyes and to ignore or downplay the thoughts and insights of other people. Following the three essays in Talks to Students, I suggest reading James' 1898 essay "Philosophical Conceptions and Practical Results" delivered in 1898 in Berkeley, California. In this essay, James first announced and articulated his philosophy of pragmatism, and stated his indebtedness to his philosophical colleagues Charles Peirce and Josiah Royce. This essay makes inspiring reading. James is direct and eloquent in relating his pragmatic philosophy to the religious quest.
After reading these short essays, a good next step would be to read the collection "The Will to Believe and Other Essays in Popular Philosophy." In this collection, James is addressing educated college audiences as he explores questions of religious faith, free will, pluralism, and ethics. The final essay in this volume of James's writings, "On Immortality" can be read together with the essays in "The Will to Believe."
The two remaining books in this collection are both derived from James's massive "Principles of Psychology." The "Talks to Teachers" is short and accessible. It focuses on how psychology can be used to advantage in teaching young students. This short book offers an insightful and accessible introduction to James's psychology. Here is one of the more inspring passages in James from the "Memory" chapter of "Talks to Teachers" on the value of perserverence and purpose and the will to learn in the face of obstacles.
"Depend upon it, no one need be too much cast down by the discovery of his deficiency in any elementary faculty of the mind. What tells in life is the whole mind working together, and the deficiencies of any one faculty can be compensated by the efforts of the rest. You can be an artist without visual images, a reader without eyes, a mass of erudition with a bad elementary memory. In almost any subject your passion for the subject will save you. If you only care enough for a result, you will almost certainly attain it. If you wish to be rich, you will be rich; if you wish to be learned, you will be learned; if you wish to be good, you will be good. Only you must, then, really wish these things, and wish them with exclusiveness, and not wish at the same time a hundred other incompatible things just as strongly." (p. 790)
The "Psychology: Briefer Course" was an abridgment James prepared of his "Principles" for use in college introductory courses in psychology. Even though it is an abridgment, the book includes a great deal of detail. It develops James's thought on the "stream of consciousness" and on the nature of the "self" and it is interlaced throughout with observations on the relationship between psychology, philosophy, and religion. Several of the remaining essays in the volume take up themes articulated in the "Psychology" and develop them in substantial technical detail.
James was an eloquent writer. His pragmatic philosophy has been highly influential, with thinkers such as Richard Rorty and Hilary Putnam acknowledging its influence. James preoccupation of reconciling the scientific and religious outlooks on life remains much with us. There is no better way to become involved with James's thoughts and issues than by serious and sustained reading of his works. The two volumes in the Library of America series will allow the reader to explore the work of William James. Readers wanting to get to know William James may also wish to read Robert Richardson's excellent biography "William James: In the Maelstrom of American Modernism".
Robin FriedmanWilliam James : Writings 1878-1899 : Psychology, Briefer Course / The Will to Believe / Talks to Teachers and Students / Essays (Library of America) OverviewThe brilliant, engagingly written early works of the writer and teacher who has profoundly influenced the way Americans think. "The Will to Believe and Other Essays in Popular Philosophy" argues that each of us has the right to believe in hypotheses that are not susceptible to proof and that such beliefs might actually change the world. Also includes "Psychology: Briefer Course," a condensed and revised version of the monumental "Principles of Psychology," "Talks to Teachers and Students," and nine important essays.

Student Companion to Charles Dickens (Student Companions to Classic Writers) ReviewIf you're assigned to read a Charles Dickens novel for class and you need a lot of help understanding it, this book will be perfect for you! It contains tons of information on most of his works, and it is written specifically for high school and undergraduate college audiences. What it offers better than the Cliffs Notes or Sparks Notes series is probably the way it relates Charles Dickens' works to the society of his times.
Chapter one of this book is basically introduces you to Charles Dickens himself, the important events in his and his family's life, and how those events inspired Charles Dickens to write some of his books. The second chapter gives additional information about what was going on in the literary world, as well as the rest of the world, to help you understand his novels in the context of that era (Victorian England). The rest of the book addresses specific works: Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Hard Times, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations, as well as a handful of his early novels and Christmas-themed novels. Each section explains in depth key events, symbols, themes, and other elements of each story, their significance, and how it ties in with what was going on in the real world. The authors have also included commentary on how certain groups of people, e.g. feminists or Marxists, would react to the novels.
If you're looking for something that covers a chapter-by-chapter analysis of a specific book by Charles Dickens, this companion book unfortunately falls short of that, and you should consult the Cliffs Notes or Sparknotes series for that. Still, if you're reading anything by Charles Dickens and you can obtain this book somehow, it is well worth your time.Student Companion to Charles Dickens (Student Companions to Classic Writers) OverviewCharles Dickens was the most popular writer of his age and is still considered one of the world's greatest novelists. This well-written study surveys his unusual and prolific life, relating his fiction writings to his concerns and active involvement with social conditions of early Victorian England. Glancy skillfully takes the reader back in time to appreciate the historical settings that inspired works like Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and A Tale of Two Cities. An entire chapter is devoted to each of these works, as well as to David Copperfield, Hard Times, the Christmas books, and the early novels from The Pickwick Papers to Martin Chuzzlewit. In each chapter Glancy's analysis of plot, style, and character development bring these imaginative stories to life for the reader. This book examines Dickens's keen understanding of human nature and draws out the themes that make works such as A Christmas Carol as beloved today as when first written. This companion to Dickens will aid students in understanding the social context and literary genius of one of the greatest Victorian novelists. The thorough biographical chapter traces Dickens' life from his childhood through the development of his multi-faceted literary career. The literary heritage chapter examines the tremendous influence Dickens exerted on writing then and now. This volume surveys all of Dickens' work and provides in-depth readings of five of his novels and his Christmas works. The series format makes analysis of setting, plot, character development, and themes for each work accessible to students. The alternate critical perspectives enhance readers' understanding of Dickens' work. The selected bibliography and reviews cover both original and contemporary sources.
