Aquamarine Blue 5: Personal Stories Of College Students With Autism ReviewAn intriguing collection of essays by those on the autistic spectrum(AS). The editor has deliberately resisted overediting of the essays so the AS style of thinking and wording comes through. The writers mostly focus on their college and young adult years and the problems with finding friends and employment. Life poses many difficulties, even for higher functioning AS people with college degrees. They have academic and job skills, but the social differences pose a significant barrier.
A relative of mine found this book helpful in giving insight to how some AS people perceive and encounter the world. This book might also be helpful to AS teenagers and young adults to help them realize a commonality of experience.
I am amazed by the explosion of books on Aspergers and autistic spectrum disorders. Until recently, there were only a few books available with the "inside" perspective of autism, such as by Temple Grandin. I welcome the contribution of others' perspectives.Aquamarine Blue 5: Personal Stories Of College Students With Autism OverviewThe first book to be written by autistic college students who have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, or High Functioning Autism, Aquamarine Blue 5 demonstrates their unique way of looking at and solving problems and the challenges they face. These readable essays detail the struggles of a highly sensitive group and show that there are gifts specific to autistic students that enrich the university system, scholarship, and the world as a whole. Containing the stories of a dozen autistic students, the book deals with everything from learning to eat in dormitory dining halls to making friends to exploring sexuality.

Real Life Bully Prevention for Real Kids: 50 Ways to Help Elementary and Middle School Students ReviewI thought this book was perfect for elementary and middle school teachers. The exercises were age appropriate. I feel this would be a great addition to a PBIS program that was focusing on bully prevention. I especially like the fact that the book defines bullying. Many children are in bullying situations and don't even know it. I recommend this book to all my School-wide PBIS teams.Real Life Bully Prevention for Real Kids: 50 Ways to Help Elementary and Middle School Students OverviewMany states currently mandate character education, and school districts across the country need anti-bullying education programs to counter the rising tide of aggression and relational aggression that is the norm among many students. In fact, many school districts now require teachers to include lessons on bully prevention in their curriculum.Real Life Bully Prevention For Real Kids addresses this pervasive problem by offering students hands-on activities. Teachers will want to use this book in their classrooms with their students as part of the school's anti-bullying curriculum. As an added bonus, the activities reinforce English/language arts, social studies, and health education curricular goals. Counselors, therapists, and school administrators can also use the activities in large and small group instruction. Additionally, leaders of after-school programs and youth leadership programs, such as scouting, dramatics classes, and religious education classes, will find the activities helpful in addressing their bully prevention programs. Each activity contains a description, goals for children, and helpful hints for adults to guide their youngsters through the program.

Working with Parents of Noncompliant Children: A Guide to Evidence-Based Parent Training for Practitioners and Students (School Psychology Book) ReviewBehavior problems with children are always a touchy subject for many, having to face the parents if they do something to offend them. "Working with Parents of Noncompliant Children: A Guide to Evidence-Based Parent Training for Practitioners and Students" is a guide for training parents to better deal with their children and their behavioral and attitude problems that so often come up. Teaching valuable techniques for any psychologist or other professional, and enhanced with appendixes, bibliographies, and more, "Working with Parents of Noncompliant Children: A Guide to Evidence-Based Parent Training for Practitioners and Students" is a must for community library psychology collections.
Working with Parents of Noncompliant Children: A Guide to Evidence-Based Parent Training for Practitioners and Students (School Psychology Book) OverviewThis book presents an in-depth look at evidence-based programs for training parents of children with behavior problems. Authors Shriver and Allen review the empirical support for four major programs, as well as some more popular programs that lack strong empirical support. Throughout this review they teach readers how to identify the best research in parent training, how to prepare for parent training sessions, and finally show how to translate this research into everyday practice. Parents usually are the most influential people in a child's life. So when child problems like noncompliance, hyperactivity, sleep problems, feeding problems, toileting problems, academic problems, and adolescent-parent conflict arise it is important for parents to take on the primary role in their resolution. This book explains what parents are taught when collaborating with a psychologist or counselor and how they are taught effectively. Practitioners, whether they are experienced, new to parent training, or students of the field, will find this book to be a valuable resource for taking interventions developed under tightly controlled research conditions and adapting them to the conditions of day-to-day practice, where resources are more limited and presenting problems are often more complex.
