Far too many young people sit in classes disengaged; far too many drop out of school altogether. The drop-out statistics are frightening enough, but no one really knows how many more students merely endure school, sitting in the back of the room, tuned out. Engaging the Disengaged is addressed to those of us who work with such students, and also to those who work with the teachers and principals who work with such students - district administrators, for example. Finally, it speaks to teacher education and continuing education programs that prepare teachers and administrators to work in schools that "house" such students. The reader will encounter many different voices from K-12 schools throughout the country in this book: voices of students, voices of their teachers, and voices of those who observe these students and teachers working together.
This book is about changing the culture of schools so that they are more humane and habitable for struggling learners - really, for all learners. Easton argues that schools should make important changes, such as creating whole-school learning communities. Teachers can certainly change their own classrooms, but school wide change is likely to have a greater effect. In fact, redesigned schools - not just high schools but all schools that serve struggling students - can help keep such students in school, learning, graduating, and contributing to a society that needs them.
Easton organizes her ideas into two sections: Culture and Curriculum, and Instruction and Assessment. The final chapter pulls it all together by looking at the effect of school on the whole student. Topics include a testing culture vs. a learning culture; the importance of building relationships and creating community; how principles govern a school better than rules; building a democracy in schools; how really to be standards-based; innovative instructional strategies; and performance assessment for learning.
For over a decade, I have been working with young people who have found success to be elusive in their high school experiences. Few were on track to graduating and many had dropped out. Easton's book shares realistic and inspiring examples of the kind of engagement that transforms such kids' lives.

Overcoming Difficulties with Number: Supporting Dyscalculia and Students who Struggle with Maths ReviewThis book covers basic math skills like addition, subtraction, multiplication and addition. The book contains no fraction or decimal work of any kind.
I'm not a teacher but hold a BSEE. Purchased this book because my 5th grader struggles with math. He's fine with addition and subtraction up to 20. Can skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s no problem, but didn't know all of his multiplication facts. I purchased this book with the hopes that we'd find other methods of instruction. Something novel and research based.
I like "Overcoming Difficulties With Number" because it provides activities to teach basic numeracy using games, dominoes, and Cuisenaire rods. The use of concrete math manipulatives are essential for teaching basic math concepts to individuals with math difficulties.
The book comes with a CD that you can use to print off all the necessary materials. Activities also cover a mental math technique called bridging. This technique teaches how to add and subtract using a number line. The subtraction method is also known as complementary addition. Other mental math activities include review of the area model of multiplication and addition by partitioning numbers.
Chapters 5, 6 & 7 have proven to be the most helpful to my family. Chapter 5 teaches multiplication, starting with specific Cuisenaire rod activities (a concrete manipulative), moving towards pictorial representation (area model of multiplication), and followed lastly by activities that use abstractions aka the traditional way most people perform columnar multiplication.
This concrete-pictorial-abstract approach to teach is scientifically proven to help people with math problems and is used by Singapore math incidentally.

I don't agree overall with the author's abstract approach to the area model of division aka Chap 8, so we skipped it and used a method called the partial quotient method for long division. I simply don't like the method but it may work very well with other individuals.
I'm happy to report that my son knows his times tables and we regularly fall back on the the methods taught in this book when DS struggles. The area model of multiplication is simply a pictorial way of teaching the times tables via the distributive property of multiplication. The distributive property of multiplication is an essential element of algebra. It's amazing to me that I've taught my son these methods and I can see how helpful they will be in the future.
Bird has written other books. I recommend that you purchase "Overcoming Difficulties with Number first". If you feel like you need more work, then purchase "The Dyscalculia Toolkit". This book has been a great resource for helping my son.
Overcoming Difficulties with Number: Supporting Dyscalculia and Students who Struggle with Maths OverviewIn writing this practical book, Ronit Birddraws on her teaching and training experience to create teaching plans for key numeracy topics aimed at those working with students aged 9-16.




She provides detailed strategies for teaching numeracy skills through a progression of practical activities and visualisation techniques which build the self-esteem of students who need extra help and give them a basic foundation in number. While the plans cover the National Numeracy Strategy, they can also be used in any setting where maths is being taught.



Topics covered include:

- games and puzzles for learning number components

- bridging

- multiplication

- reasoning strategies

Included in the book are current research findings, information regarding literacy goal setting for students with significant disabilities, and practical methods to adapting and modifying literacy to make it accessible for all learners.
After reading the first chapter of this book, I immediately committed to having it become a permanent staple on my professional bookshelf. Not only does it challenge educators in an ethical way to consider their own viewpoints, biases, etc., but it provides research, experience, and ideas to help educators adhere to best practice and include all learners in the beneficial and necessary acquisition of literacy skills. The section entitled, "What is Literacy?" (page 2) was an excellent way to introduce the concept. Before all students will be able to have access to true literacy instruction, teachers must challenge themselves and their definitions in order to truly do what's best for all of their students. Moreover, the section on "Identifying Literacy Goals" (page 38) provided a practical way to ensure that the goals I set for my students are in line with 1) their best interests, 2) their present capabilities, and 3) a realistic, practical, and beneficial end. This book is one that I can refer back to and use as a reference. SF Reading Street: Grade 4: Student Edition (NATL) ReviewI enjoyed this book. I read it with my daughter while she does her schoolwork. She enjoys the stories and the reading helps are excellent. I enjoy the way they tie all the stories into science, social studies and non-fiction articles. They also have good writing prompts for the writing assignments that draw upon a young person's own experiences. It seems to tie together all their prior knowledge, current knowledge and then give them a little more knowledge than they had before. The poetry is fun, also. McCormick's book provides a very sound basis for understanding all aspects of literacy instruction for special needs populations as it relates to assessment and instructional interventions.
I especially apprecite that four chapters are devoted to assessment. Excellent. She provides a very thorough analysis of the different types and purposes of assessment and includes informal assessment along with formal assessment.
This is not designed to be a beginnng text for literacy instruction. It is designed to build upon an existing body of knowledge related to literacy instruction. It would be benificial for all classroom teachers to understand, however, it is especially suited for reading specialists and special education LD instructors who teach literacy.
