Saxon Math Course 3 (2007 Student edition) ReviewWe started using this book the day we received it. After using it for a short time my daughter's math grade went up. Unlike her school text book, this book explains the math concepts and gives examples much better. Also, there is more repetition and the sequence examples makes more sense than her school text book.
This book has helped me to reinforce concepts in a more effective way because I understand the concepts much better and can both explain as well as give examples of what we are talking about.

This is real math. Practical math. Lessons are presented in a way that makes students want to learn. My daughter continually comments how much she likes this book. And believe me, she's a touch critic.

TimeLinks: Fifth Grade, The United States, Volume 1 Student Edition ReviewI used this textbook for my daughter's 5th grade homeschooling curriculum. This book is the first volume in a series of two. My guess would be that volume 2 is for 6th grade social studies. Volume 1 starts with pre-colonial America, explaining the way of life of major Native American groups. It then moves to the early exploration of America by Europeans and their interactions with native populations. I explains the effects on culture, disease and diets due to the interactions amongst the two groups. It then covers the exploration and colonization by the British, Spanish, French and Dutch in North America and the colonial way of life. The book ends with the American Declaration of Independence, American victories, and the end of the war. Each lesson was short and to the point. There are basic questions at the end of each lesson to enforce concepts learned, and there are review and assessments at the end of each different Unit. There is a small Geography handbook at the end of the book, covering the basics of geography. Real Science-4-Kids Chemistry Level 1 Student Text ReviewI am using this book to teach a study club with girls ages 8-12. I am very pleased with the format, it is easy for all of us to use. Teacher prep. time is minimal. The other instructor has a strong background in chemistry so at first we relied on her but that background is not necessary to sucessfully use this material. I appreciate that although the text is simplified for the age group it still uses proper terminology and is not "dumbed down". The page layout is attractive and easy to sort out. (Not too much crammed into the pages.) Because we have the time and flexibility we do add related experiments from other sources but the provided lab work stands on its own very well.Real Science-4-Kids Chemistry Level 1 Student Text OverviewReal Science-4-Kids Chemistry, Level I,written at a 4th and 5th grade reading level,introduces children to college-level chemistry concepts such as the atom and periodic table, molecular bonding and chemical reactions. acid-base reactions, mixtures and separating mixtures, and large molecules such as carbohydrates, polymers and enzymes, and includes a glossary/index.

It was extremely helpful for him because it was interesting and cut right to the chase. It doesn't blog the reader down with unnecessary information and is written in such a way that allows the reader to capture the most important details of the topic in an interesting way. I would highly recommend this book for junior high through high school. (Even if High Schoolers have another book, this book does a great job of simplifying the information so kids can remember the importance of the topic.) I have seen several textbooks that contain so much information, and the kids don't retain the information shortly after they finish the course. American History The Early Years, Student Edition ReviewWe are a homeschool family, and I purchased this book for myself as an overview of American History. It's been a while since I was in school, and I felt like I needed a better grasp of what happened and when. This book was perfect for that. It seems to be a highschool (maybe 10th grade) textbook, so it would probably be pretty boring for kids, but it was so easy to read and understand for me as an adult. Steck-Vaughn America's Story: Student Edition 2006 (Amer Story) ReviewI am a teacher of learning disabled children and adults. As such, I am always looking for easy but interesting material for my students. America's History is, surprisingly, one of those books.
I was introduced to the book by an adult student. Almost a non-reader, as he slowly learned to read, this book was used. He was absolutely enthralled by it. As a slow learner in school, he never learned anything about the history of our country, so every page was new and exciting to him. It starts with the early explorers and visitors to our coasts, then brings Pilgrims and immigrants to the country, and continues on through the years with the colonization, industrialization, wars, common people, and famous men and women.
The book is interestingly written and holds attention by short paragraphs and easy vocabulary, yet covers all of the major concepts and history. But it never talks down to the reader. Adult learners need to have things expressed at their own adult level, but too often,unfamiliar words and too much repetition defeat the purpose. Comprehension, too often overlooked, is easily grasped by this good effort. And even at this level, better readers can also enjoy the book, because it is telling things that many adults have forgotten about their own country. It refreshes without boring. (Even the teacher often enjoys the refresher course !)
Try it with your own children, for example. I think you'll find it both interesting and easily understood.

SF Reading Street: Grade 4: Student Edition (NATL) ReviewI enjoyed this book. I read it with my daughter while she does her schoolwork. She enjoys the stories and the reading helps are excellent. I enjoy the way they tie all the stories into science, social studies and non-fiction articles. They also have good writing prompts for the writing assignments that draw upon a young person's own experiences. It seems to tie together all their prior knowledge, current knowledge and then give them a little more knowledge than they had before. The poetry is fun, also. SRA Decoding Strategies (Decoding B1 Student Book) ReviewThis is the student workbook for a good remedial reading program designed to correct poor reading habits and help a child learn to decode words better and faster. Fluency levels rise as decoding improves. The complete set with teacher materials and student text is required to use this program. Although this is one level of an over-all program, it can stand as a unit all on its own. Students with more severe problems should start in an earlier level and those needing further work could move on to level C. There is a placement test located in all the teacher guides and can sometimes be found on the Internet.
This program works well with a minimum of a third grade level child or above who has some reading problems and does not read at an adequate rate. The stories are fun and relevant. Lessons involve "chapters" of a high interest story each day. The child looks forward to finding out the next installment of the story while learning valuable skills in decoding words within text. It is easy to use-no lesson preparation. Everything is "scripted" and tells you what to say and do and what is required of the student.
This program was designed for a classroom situation, but adapts very easily to homeschooling. This program brought my struggling 3rd grader up to grade level in just 65 lessons.
