Life & Student CD-ROM ReviewFirst, just to let you know what perspective I am reviewing this from, I am a college student, and this text was used in my 200-level introductory biology course. Since I am a student, and not a professor or expert of any sort, I am evaluating the book based on how helpful it was to me in learning the material. For input from biology professors, you'll have to take a look at some of the other reviews here.
"Life: The Science of Biology" has definitely been one of the better biology textbooks I've used. The text is well written, with clear explanations and plenty of real-life examples to help you tie small details into the bigger picture. But beware: The information here is incredibly in-depth, so if you're only looking for a basic overview of biology, you may actually want a slightly simpler book, otherwise you may get lost in all the details. It was perfect for my 200-level class, and gave me all the information I needed, but I don't think it would be the ideal text for an introductory biology course. One other reviewer here mentioned that she used this text to teach her AP biology students. I took AP biology in high school (and got a 5 on the exam) and can guarantee you that this text contains far, far more than you would ever need to know to get a perfect score. It's definitely a college level text.
The book has numerous detailed, well-labeled diagrams that are helpful in understanding different processes. In fact, being a rather visual, hands-on learner, I sometimes found the step-by-step diagrams easier to follow than the text itself. There are also plenty of great photographs and other helpful images. At the end of each chapter there is a bare-bones overview of key points you should know, and a self-quiz to help you evaluate your grasp of the material. At the end of the book there is an extensive glossary with definitions of key terms.
Unfortunately, there is one mistake in this book, to be found in chapter 34, "Deuterostomate Animals." On page 674, some text from the previous page is repeated, and this in turn means that part of the section entitled "Primates and the Origin of Humans" is cut off, even ending in mid-sentence. The following page is filled entirely with pictures and diagrams, no text, and then on page 676 where the text starts up again, it skips to the beginning of the next section, entirely leaving out a chunk of information. This is the only place in the book where I found such a problem.
There is a website to accompany this text (www.thelifewire.com). I never found it necessary to use the site for my studies, but it may be helpful for some. It contains chapter summaries, animated tutorials, text-related activities, self quizzes, suggestions for further reading, and a glossary of key terms (same as the one found at the back of the book). The book is also supposed to come with a CD-ROM. My school's bookstore was selling the books and CDs separately, and I did not purchase the CD and so cannot evaluate its usefulness. I know I learned everything I needed without it, and I suspect the book and website alone would be sufficient for most students' needs.
Aside from the glitch in chapter 34, mentioned above, I have found nothing to complain about with this book. I will definitely be hanging on to it for future reference, and highly recommend it to anyone needing a detailed, comprehensive biology text. NOTE: This review refers to the 7th edition of this book.Life & Student CD-ROM Overview"Life" integrates scholarship, an engaging narrative style, effective pedagogy, and art-work into a cohesive presentation of biological data and ideas that should interest students. The third edition features a new co-author - H.Craig Heller and new information - from new molecular techniques in biotechnology, immunology, and systematics. New chapters have been added on conservation biology and on recombinant DNA. Organized differently, the text addresses evolution before diversity and physiology. The artwork blends scientific precision and visual impact.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Concepts of Genetics and Student Companion Website Access Card Package (8th Edition) ReviewConcepts of Genetics is an outstanding book. It is the assigned text for a course in genetics that I am taking which is taught through the UC Berkeley Extension program. Course reading assignments cover all but two chapters and so far we have covered about 2/3 of them.
I really like the authors' approach to the subject. They do an excellent job of describing complex material in a way that makes it clear and understandable. The many diagrams, drawings and tables are an integral part of the coverage and help significantly to clarify the written explanations. The authors also have a good sense for the history of genetics, describing clearly many key experiments that have been done to establish the key principles.
The material has obviously been updated with most recent available results. The authors frequently point out areas of most intense current research. The text is definitely not light reading but if you want to learn the material, you will find it very well presented here.Concepts of Genetics and Student Companion Website Access Card Package (8th Edition) OverviewFor one or two term courses in genetics in the departments of Biology, Zoology, Agriculture or Health Science.

The Practice of Statistics & Student CD-ROM ReviewI teach AP Statistics out of this book, and I dislike it intensely. The problem isn't with the statistical concepts, which are on a par with other AP Statistics books, but with the organization of the book and support materials as an aid for teachers:
1) The topics are treated in a non-standard and unintuitive order. Data production is only introduced after data analysis. Regression is introduced far too early, and entirely without mathematical justification.
2) The problems are peppered throughout the text, rather than placed conveniently at the end of the chapter. The problems are very uneven in terms of effort-to-learning.
3) Key topics are buried in problems, and not highlighted in the teacher's support materials.
4) Support materials are scattered - some in the teacher's edition, some in the solutions guide, some in the Resource Binder.
5) The Resource Binder is detailed, but organized in a completely haphazard fashion; it's a hodge-podge of "oh, by the way, here's some stuff that worked when I taught it that one time" nuggets, rather than a planned support for teachers. "Guidance" is colloquial and unplanned. It does me no good to write "you might be tempted to delay this section until chapter 13 and then..." [Resource Binder, teacher commentary on section 4.2] -- either this is the time to introduce the concept or it isn't; I expect the textbook's authors to have worked this out. Significantly, the Resource Binder is not a corrected version of the 2nd Edition, but an almost entirely new work with different concepts, different suggestions, and different errors and typos. It's as if the authors didn't correct the last edition, but simply started over.
6) There are FAR too many errors in the the teaching guide, the solutions manual and the Resource Binder. Be prepared to do EVERY problem you assign, because you can NEVER rely on the answer keys. This is especially egregious on Chapter tests.
7) The mathematical motivation for some concepts is non-existent. The authors go so far as to state that some key concepts are "advanced mathematics" - but they then go no further. I find that I am continually supplementing the math concepts with another text.
8) The writing is flabby and meandering. Students report that they find it garrulous and tedious.
I can add more, but you get the gist of it. I address this review to teachers who are handed this book to consider for adoption: do NOT adopt it. Roxy Peck's book, which I've also used, is far superior, especially in its organization for a teacher's use. I am sure there are other good texts, but this isn't one of them - at least from the teacher's viewpoint. The Practice of Statistics & Student CD-ROM OverviewTailored to mirror the AP Statistics course, The Practice of Statistics became a classroom favorite. This edition incorporates a number of first-time features to help students prepare for the AP exam, plus more simulations and statistical thinking help, and instructions for the TI-89 graphic calculator.

Prentice Hall Biology (Student Edition) ReviewThe previous reviewer was complaining about a shipping error, not a comment on the text itself. There is a huge and amazing lab book that goes with the text and that must have been what had been delivered. The book that goes with this ISBN number is a terrific Biology text. I researched several high school biology books, and this is the best I found. The writing is clear and makes difficult concepts easy to understand and the graphics make it easy to read. Add the biology lab book and it makes a complete high school biology program. I would highly recommend this for any homeschooling family.Prentice Hall Biology (Student Edition) Overview

Uncovering Student Thinking in Mathematics: 25 Formative Assessment Probes ReviewUncovering Student Thinking in Mathematics: 25 Formative Assessment Probes is one of the best mathematics assessment books I have read! In addition to well-crafted assessments and alternative versions, the authors provide detailed information as to what conceptual or procedural gaps students may have based on distractor choices. The assessments can be used with all levels of students from kindergarten through high school. Gradeband scales associated with each assessment make it easy to determine when students would probably be introduced to skills covered by an assessment, and in what grade levels students usually still struggle with those skills. I found this an easy book to read, and I would recommend this book to any teacher who wishes to increase usage of assessment for learning to determine next instructional steps for students.Uncovering Student Thinking in Mathematics: 25 Formative Assessment Probes OverviewAppropriate for all grade levels, these 25 field-tested, easy-to-use mathematics assessment probes help teachers modify instruction by determining students' understanding of core mathematical concepts.

Anatomy of Hatha Yoga: A Manual for Students, Teachers, and Practitioners ReviewThis book is required for the yoga teacher training I am enrolled in. I've read it from cover to cover and I was blown away by the amount of information Coulter presents. He doesn't make references to specific schools but presents things very generally. He also doesn't use too much Sanskrit, so most yoga students shouldn't be too intimidated by the material.
The information he presents on Breathing, the importance of the Abdominopelvic muscles (or the "core muscles", as they're popularly known today) and his chapter on Forward Bends where he discusses nutation were my favorite portions. Coulter isn't doctrinaire in most cases, as is appropriate for someone discussing the anatomical aspect of yoga. He presents variations for the popular poses (forward bends, cobra, triangle, etc.) and discusses what the ramifications of the modifications are. While some are called "advanced" and some are called "beginner", it doesn't come off as a value judgment.
Because Coulter was so thorough throughout the entire book and backed up almost every statement with a logical explanation, it was noticeable when he did not. For instance, he, like almost every other author of a yoga text, recommends that women not practice inversions if they are menstruating. Why? I really hoped that someone with his background would be able to supply an explanation other than because that's the way it's been done. Also, while he spends quite a bit of time talking about the importance of the right tetrahedron for meditation postures and the various postures that can be used, I felt he glossed over the reasons why meditation has to be done sitting versus lying down. Minor quibbles, but only more obvious because the rest of the book is so meticulous.
If you are planning on teaching yoga, if you already have a yoga practice or if you're not quite convinced that yoga can do anything for your body, pick up this book.Anatomy of Hatha Yoga: A Manual for Students, Teachers, and Practitioners OverviewAnatomy of Hatha Yoga is the only modern authoritative source that correlates the study of hatha yoga with anatomy and physiology. Hatha yoga is comprised of stretching, strengthening and breathing exercises in upright, lying down and inverted postures.Yoga teachers and students, personal trainers, medical therapists, or anyone who is curious or troubled about how the body responds to stretching and exercise will find in this book a cornucopia -- partly new and partly old -- of readable and reliable information. It was written and edited to meet the needs of a general audience largely unschooled in the biomechanical sciences, and yet to attract and challenge the interests of the medical profession. This book features 230 black and white photographs and more than 120 diagrams and anatomical illustrations.Chapter 1 summarizes general principles of anatomy and physiology as applied to hatha yoga. Breathing is next in chapter 2 because yogic breathing expedites movement and posture. Breathing is followed by pelvic and abdominal exercises in chapter 3 because the pelvis and abdomen form the foundation of the body. Standing postures will then be covered in chapter 4 because these poses are so important for beginning students, and because they provide a preview of backbending, forward bending, and twisting postures, which are covered in detail in chapters 5, 6, and 7. The headstand and shoulderstand, including an introduction to cardiovascular function, are presented in chapters 8 and 9. Postures for relaxation and meditation are treated last in chapter 10.WINNER, 2002 Benjamin Franklin Award for Health Wellness, and Nutrition - Publishers Marketing Association.

Modern Genetic Analysis & Student CD-ROM: Integrating Genes and Genomes ReviewIn the last few years several very good textbooks and monographs in genetics have appeared, due mainly to the success of various genome projects and also to the rise of bioinformatics as a new discipline in biology, computer science, and mathematics. Most of these textbooks have appeared in many prior editions, and comparing these older editions with the newest ones, one can indeed see a remarkable difference in enthusiasm in the authors. They are clearly very excited about the developments in molecular biology and genetics that have taken place and the confidence among biologists that the fundamental understanding of life is finally within reach. Readers can share their excitement by the study of these books, and doing so one cannot help but be marveled by the incredible ingenuity of the scientific methods used to unravel the processes of life.
Of all these excellent books, I find this one to be the best, and my judgment of the book's quality is from the standpoint of someone who is very involved in the algorithms behind bioinformatics and mathematical biology and is attempting to gain, as quickly as possible, the necessary background in genetics. My review therefore will be primarily addressed to those mathematicians or even physicists who plan on moving into bioinformatics.
To relative newcomers to genetics such as myself, the learning of molecular biology and genetics can involve a huge amount of memory work. To the more mathematically-inclined reader, the memorization of facts can be most unpalatable. The learning of the material in this book will also involve such extreme exercises in memory, but there are a few strategies that the authors employ that, even though they were directed at a general readership, actually serve to make the learning much easier for the mathematician or mathematical biologist. These are the use of concept maps and the assigning of "challenging problems" at the end of most chapters in the book. These serve effectively to make the reader think through and interconnect the many concepts, which for the mathematician who is used to the economy of thought that mathematics brings, is an absolute necessity for the learning experience. Also, the authors are well aware of the need for students to learn how to analyze data and interact with online databases, so a lot of the material in the book is written to address this need.
Even from merely an aesthetic point of view the book is exceptional, as the soft colors used in the illustrations are very beautiful, and actually serve to make the learning of the material very pleasureful. And in addition, the reader can access the book's Website and follow the many animations that were put together for the book. And here again, the playing of these animations increase the speed in which one can learn the subject.
The authors also ask the readers to consider the impact that biotechnology and genetic engineering will have in the upcoming decades. One of the most dramatic, and I think the most important paragraphs in the book is the one in which the authors state that "the public cannot relay on reports published in the general media for the kind of critical evaluation needed to make informed personal and political decisions. Nor can it be left to experts, who have their own biases and agendas. There is no substitute for acquiring the kind of basic knowledge of genetics that is essential to all informed decisions." Their goal is provide the background that will allow the reader to differentiate between bad and good claims about genetics, and to think critically about both the negative and positive aspects of genetic research and genetic engineering.
I believe the use of genetic engineering and biotechnology in all biological systems, both human and non-human, holds the best hope for the future of life on earth. This book has given an excellent introduction to the biology and genetics behind these technologies. The excitement and optimism expressed in the book will no doubt encourage many individuals to further their studies in genetics and enter the new biological professions of the 21st century.Modern Genetic Analysis & Student CD-ROM: Integrating Genes and Genomes OverviewModern Genetic Analysis - with CD-ROM 2nd edition, the second introductory genetics textbook W.H. Freeman has published by the Griffiths author team, implements an innovative approach to teaching genetics. Rather than presenting material in historical order, the text integrates molecular genetics with classical genetics. The integrated approach provides students with a concrete foundation in molecules, while simultaneously building an understanding of the more abstract elements of transmission genetics. The book also incorporates greater attention to pedagogy, improved chapter organization, enhanced art, and a better overall design, making it a more effective learning tool.

Medical Physiology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY (BORON)) ReviewI have bought 4 physiology books during my medical studies and i am only a second year student! And i must say, that this book is definetely the best one, if you have the basic knowledge. If you are a new begginer though, it is very very difficult to start with this book, since the explanations are very detailed and require a certain level of 'scientific way of thinking'. There are many research examples and historical links, something that a student prepearing for an exam doesn't want to waste time on. Some of the explanations are too long and complicated, that one looses the initial idea of what the explanation was about.
On the other hand, if you are quite skilfull in physiology, this is a great book. The pictures are extraordinary and very scematic and understandable!!! You definetely get a lot for your money!
So, in conclusion, if you buy yourself a simpler physiology book and get the basics from there, Medical Physiology is the perfect choise to go on expanding your knowledge with. But don't buy it as your very very first physiology book. It will just confuse and frustrate you.Medical Physiology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY (BORON)) Overview
