There Are No Shortcuts: How an inner-city teacher--winner of the American Teacher Award--inspires his students and challenges us to rethink the way we educate our children ReviewAfter I saw a documentary about Rafe Esquith, I decided to read "There Are No Shortcuts," in which this unique educator gives his perspective on the rewards, challenges, and disappointments of teaching in a Los Angeles public school. Esquith has two decades under his belt fighting entrenched bureaucrats who prefer conformity to individuality. During his years in Hobart Elementary School, he has taught inner-city children Shakespeare and other works of classic literature as well as advanced mathematics and music. In addition, he has given his students the skills and the confidence to achieve more than they ever dreamed was possible. All of this comes at a price. Esquith almost went bankrupt paying for the materials that he needed to support his curriculum, and he ended up in the hospital after putting in long hours with little sleep. He still works from dawn to dusk, as well as on Saturdays and school holidays, but he attempts to avoid burnout by occasionally taking some time off to relax with his family.
One of Esquith's mottos is "work hard, be nice." He certainly works hard, but he is not always nice in his criticism of the educational establishment. He skewers incompetent and indifferent teachers and administrators, ridicules irrational and obstructive rules and regulations, and even has a few harsh words for his own union, which he has supported over the years. Anything or anyone who prevents an educator from doing whatever he can to bring out the best in every student gets thumbs down from Esquith. He believes that a teacher should be able to come into school to work with students during his free time, be allowed to take kids on overnight trips, be permitted to create his own course of study, and be given respect by his fellow educators, even though he refuses to toe the party line.
"There Are No Shortcuts" is not a "how-to" book for new public school teachers. If anything, it's a cautionary tale about how a person who sticks his neck out is in danger of getting it chopped off. Esquith is not now and has never been a typical teacher, and few will have the desire or the energy to emulate him. However, he is inspiring in his desire to uncover his students' untapped talents, and he has given a great gift to those fortunate enough to have been in his classroom. It is heartwarming to learn that some of Esquith's former students go on to Ivy League schools and become successful professionals. Many of them keep in touch with their former mentor and a few take the time to revisit Hobart to lend a hand. It is also amazing that such luminaries as Ian McKellan and Hal Holbrook are enthusiastic fans of Esquith who regularly visit his classes.
Although Rafe Esquith is an award-winning teacher who has received widespread media coverage, he is not a saint. He confesses that he has made some serious errors, and he admits that he may occasionally come across as rude and intolerant. Esquith's passion for his job and his disparagement of teachers who coast rather than strive for excellence has aroused animosity in some of his colleagues who may be resentful of his fame and what they perceive as his sense of entitlement. Why should they have to follow the rules while Rafe Esquith gets special treatment? He makes no bones about how little patience he has for the many underachievers who stand in front of the nation's classrooms. These include educators who are lazy, rarely read, use the boring textbooks provided by the school instead of stimulating materials, and who refuse to give even a minute extra of their time to their students. Is Rafe Esquith an altruistic and heroic individual who is correct in his assessment of public education? Or is he an arrogant, unrealistic, and self-serving publicity hound? Whether you are a cheerleader or a critic, no one can dispute the fact that this is a man who expects a great deal of himself, his students, and everyone else, and he has no intention of lowering his standards anytime soon. There Are No Shortcuts: How an inner-city teacher--winner of the American Teacher Award--inspires his students and challenges us to rethink the way we educate our children Overview

Saxon Math Course 3 (2007 Student edition) ReviewWe started using this book the day we received it. After using it for a short time my daughter's math grade went up. Unlike her school text book, this book explains the math concepts and gives examples much better. Also, there is more repetition and the sequence examples makes more sense than her school text book.
This book has helped me to reinforce concepts in a more effective way because I understand the concepts much better and can both explain as well as give examples of what we are talking about.

Academic Competitions for Gifted Students: A Resource Book for Teachers and Parents ReviewA better title for the book would be "Fun Competitions for Youth". This is NOT a book only for "Gifted Students"! While some of the competitions described are certainly for students who have a strong interest in a specific area most do not require that a student be "gifted" with a high IQ.
This book would be an excellent addition to any school library for use by teachers in all subject areas and should be borrowed from the local library by home school parents who want to add fun to their curriculum or parents of public school students who would like to offer their child an exciting opportunity. Most entries have a web address that the reader can go to for more information and applications.
Of the 170 "competitions" listed in the book 78 can be entered by a single student, or a group as small as three (about four competitions). The 78 competitions I identified did not include those that were only open to students of a specific race (four or five), those based on the knowledge of a foreign language (four or five) nor ones that most students would be prevented from participating in because of cost.
The opening chapter has a number of great ideas about how to empower youth to participate in these "competitions" without feeling that not "winning" is somehow "loosing".
I was pleased to find that a number of the competitions actually "awarded" a certificate or something like it to all students who entered. I would love it if every competition would send each participant a thank you letter telling them how great it is that they submitted an entry. Nothing is quite as exciting as knowing someone thinks you are great simply because you participate!Academic Competitions for Gifted Students: A Resource Book for Teachers and Parents OverviewThis useful resource contains criteria for selecting and implementing academic competitions for students of all ages. Particular advice is offered on competitions for gifted students. The book will be of interest to both teachers and parents.

Making Math Connections: Using Real-World Applications With Middle School Students ReviewWe used this book with our sixth grader - the math was challenging and the book was designed for an older student but he was interested because it dealt with real world calamaties. He and my husband did it together. He could not have done it without handholding instruction. Better for highschool or older. Book has been a mainstay in our math exploration. Lessons are not short - have to dig-in.Making Math Connections: Using Real-World Applications With Middle School Students Overview

Real Science-4-Kids, Physics Level 1, Student Text ReviewHaving heard rave reviews about this set (text, lab book, language connects) I was excited to teach this curriculum at a homeschool co-op in which I'm involved. (I used to teach physics and chemistry in the private and public sector.) As I have worked my way through the text and labs, I've been surprised at the number of issues that keep coming up. Call me "new fashioned" but let's work in metric (any lab that requires measurement). That's what 'real' scientists do. Call me picky but when she asks the kids to make a graph, she doesn't even get the independent and dependent variables on the right axis (the penny battery lab). She calls for equipment in the materials list but it isn't discussed how they're supposed to use in the actual procedure (the marble lab). Some charts are very poorly laid out (the slinky lab). Explanations are poorly written (the electroscope lab). Even the banana smash lab worked better w/play doh. The cars make a great observable imprint. Why waste a banana? I've had more success w/the Janet Van Cleave book on Physics experiments and demonstrations. The text is ok but lacks any excitement. Paul Hewitt's Conceptual Physics, while for an older crowd, can completely be used for this 3rd-5th grade age group and has wonderful analogies, graphics, and explanations. I've used it to supplement what I've been teaching at the co-op and my 9-11 year olds are doing great with it. My opinion: not worth the money.Real Science-4-Kids, Physics Level 1, Student Text OverviewReal Science-4-Kids Physics, Level I, written at a 4th and 5th grade level, presents college level physics in a way children can understand. Concepts included are: Laws of physics and the scientific method; force, work and energy; potential and kinetic energy; motion; chemical and electrical energy; current, magnets and electromagnets; light and sound energy; and conservation of energy.

Nietzsche: 'On the Genealogy of Morality' and Other Writings Student Edition (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought) ReviewI wish Cambridge UP would reissue this excellent work of Nietzsche in "Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy" series. All other major works of Nietzsche (nine books in all) were issued in this series. This edition of "Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought" differs not only in color but also in size from "History of Philosophy" series, which makes the Cambridge edition of "The Complete Works of Nietzsche" (an exceptional achievement) a bit incomplete.Nietzsche: 'On the Genealogy of Morality' and Other Writings Student Edition (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought) OverviewFriedrich Nietzsche is one of the most influential thinkers of the past 150 years and On the Genealogy of Morality (1887) is his most important work on ethics and politics. A polemical contribution to moral and political theory, it offers a critique of moral values and traces the historical evolution of concepts such as guilt, conscience, responsibility, law and justice. This is a revised and updated edition of one of the most successful volumes to appear in Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought. Keith Ansell-Pearson has modified his introduction to Nietzsche's classic text, and Carol Diethe has incorporated a number of changes to the translation itself, reflecting the considerable advances in our understanding of Nietzsche in the twelve years since this edition first appeared. In this new guise the Cambridge Texts edition of Nietzsche's Genealogy should continue to enjoy widespread adoption, at both undergraduate and graduate level.

Algebra for College Students ReviewI enjoyed the product. It has worked great for my class, and the price beat the bookstore's. I was pleased with the description because it even let me know that it came with the CD. I did not need anything that the book did not have, and it was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.Algebra for College Students OverviewKaufmann and Schwitters have built this text's reputation on clear and concise exposition, numerous examples, and plentiful problem sets. This traditional text consistently reinforces the following common thread: learn a skill; practice the skill to help solve equations; and then apply what you have learned to solve application problems. This simple, straightforward approach has helped many students grasp and apply fundamental problem solving skills necessary for future mathematics courses. Algebraic ideas are developed in a logical sequence, and in an easy-to-read manner, without excessive vocabulary and formalism. The open and uncluttered design helps keep students focused on the concepts while minimizing distractions. Problems and examples reference a broad range of topics, as well as career areas such as electronics, mechanics, and health, showing students that mathematics is part of everyday life. The text's resource package--anchored by Enhanced WebAssign, an online homework management tool--saves instructors time while also providing additional help and skill-building practice for students outside of class.
