Mammals (Time-Life Student Library) ReviewI am completely delighted with "The Little Guides" series. The format is extremely user friendly, and each guide is packed with useful and interesting information. I enjoy reading them, but my 6 year old daughter gives them the most use. While the guides are written at an adult level, there is plenty that she can read and understand. I currently own "Sharks," "Birds," "Mammals," "Space," "Whales," and "Flowers."
"Mammals" contains two parts; the first part gives an overview of the world of mammals, comparing the different characteristics (eyes, ears, feet, etc.) of mammals. Part two is packed with illustrations (over 500) and information about the rich variety of mammals that live on the earth. Each entry contains information about the animal characteristics, food, young, habitat, as well as close relatives.
This guide is packed with useful information, and is a great resource of adults as well as children!Mammals (Time-Life Student Library) OverviewDescribes the eating habits, defenses, parenting, and social behavior of mammals.

The Universe (Time-Life Student Library) ReviewSo many non-fiction books use the text-box page layout, but this one really does it well. Each page has photos, diagrams, biographies, and whatever else all in a user-friendly layout. Really fascinating information. My kids and I have been studying astronomy for our home-school unit this month. I checked out at least fifty books from the library, and this is the one we have been referring to every day; it covers all the different subjects, is easy to understand, is not overly verbose, and is very informative. The Universe (Time-Life Student Library) OverviewExamines the origin, structure, and workings of the universe, including galaxies, stars, dark matter, light years, black holes, and other aspects, and describes space exploration from ancient astronomy to modern probes.

Cherry Ames Boxed Set (Books 1-4) Student Nurse, Senior Nurse, Army Nurse & Chief Nurse ReviewWhat a delight to rediscover our courageous nurse Cherry Ames all over again! Let Cherry take us back to an era of simple virtues where honesty and integrity mattered. Cherry Ames is a series most of us baby boomers remember reading, along with Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Vicki Barr, Dana Girls, Bobsey Twins, Hardy Boys and the like. A true treasure to explore and pass on to our own children or just to read and discover the magic of series books all over again. I would recommend these books to any young girl and I am delighted to see my old friend and nurse Cherry again.Cherry Ames Boxed Set (Books 1-4) Student Nurse, Senior Nurse, Army Nurse & Chief Nurse OverviewThe first boxed set, Cherry Ames Boxed Set 1-4, introduces our beloved heroine in her four earliest adventures: Student Nurse, Senior Nurse, Army Nurse, and Chief Nurse!Cherry Ames is back, just as you remember her! The books are just as you remember them, retaining the same look, feel, and sense of adventure and patriotism as when they were first published. With fully illustrated color covers and a soft-finished hardcover format just like the originals, these books will transport you back to the days when you were reading about this spunky young nurse. Series editor and registered nurse Harriet Forman was inspired by, and remains a devoted fan of, Cherry Ames: "...I was going to follow in her footsteps and become a nurse--nothing else would do."With a heart of pure gold and a true yearning to make a difference in the world, eighteen-year-old Cherry Ames leaves her hometown and enters nursing school, embarking on a lifetime of adventures. Follow Cherry through the introductory four-book set as she grows from student nurse to chief nurse, all the while making friends, pushing the limits of authority, leading her nursing colleagues, and sleuthing and solving mysteries. Smart, courageous, mischievous, quick-witted, and above all, devoted to nursing, Cherry Ames meets adventure head-on whereever she goes.Springer Publishing Company is delighted to be bringing Helen Wells's beloved heroine back into print for a new generation of younger readers (as well as a host of nostalgic older ones). The books are available as beautifully rendered facsimile hardcover editions and in boxed sets of four.

The Flower Hunter: William Bartram, America's First Naturalist (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12) ReviewThis is a fine children's book about the life of William Bartram, one of America's early and great naturalists. The story is told in the form of a journal, written by the young William, and is accompanied by helpful maps and vivid illustrations of scenes from his various journeys. Begun on his eighth birthday, the brief but evocative journal entries tell of the boy's early interest in botany, and of his longing to accompany his father John Bartram on his explorations of the newly colonized Americas. He learns to make detailed renderings of leaves, and to identify the various types of plants in the region. Historical details are introduced casually, in the matter-of-fact manner of a child. He tells, for example, of a war between the British and the French that caused them to cancel a journey, or of his encounter with a friend of his father's -- Benjamin Franklin!! - who explains to him the marvels of electricity. We eventually see the young boy grow into a man, who is both sensitive to nature and respectful of the diverse cultures of the various inhabitants of the land. Particularly poignant is the subtle manner in which the author portrays the young man's attachment to and feeling for his aging father, as indicated in a pivotal scene where the son must rescue his father from drowning. Or in a later scene when William brings stories of a lovely but as-yet unnamed tree. His father has lost his vision, and cannot see the drawings that his son brings home for him, but together they name the species Franklinia, in honor of their mutual friend. In an informative afterward, the author points out that this tree has only survived today due to the plantings of it that Bartram made on his farm. This is a very simple and unassuming story, about a remarkable man, that can be appreciated by both young and old. It introduced me to a part of American history that I knew little about, and even inspired my two children to begin journals of the things they discover in nature. The Flower Hunter: William Bartram, America's First Naturalist (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12) Overview

Saxon Math 8/7 (Student Edition) ReviewMy child learned with another math curriculum and then had Saxon Math in the 7th grade. It was VERY difficult and further ahead then she had learned so far in other Pre-Algebra books. So, if you're going to do the Saxon Math books, I suggest you start with the earlier grades and progress that way naturally. The transition of trying to jump in and learn Saxon for the first time when you're a 7th grader is way too hard.Saxon Math 8/7 (Student Edition) Overview

Special features such as "Would You Believe?" and "Try It!" appear on every page, inviting kids to really interact with the words and pictures. I bought this book for my 11-year old to write a report about Egypt, and found her also engrossed with Greece, China, India, and the Roman Empire. Looking for Seabirds: Journal from an Alaskan Voyage (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12) ReviewThis is a fantastic book for showing grade schoolers what life as a biological field scientist would be like. Webb's journal format really brings the trip to life in a personal way. If you are a birdwatcher, you will enjoy this book as a well written trip report with great information on sea bird ecology and behaviour.
The information is great, but the illustrations are even better. The book is filled with sea bird paintings from the author that help her share the amazing spectacles she has seen while in the field.

I Fall Down (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12 (Awards)) ReviewI Fall Down is part of the Science Play Series by Vicki Cobb. This book is part science information book and part experiment book. This book is on the topic of Gravity. The experiments use household objects such as balls, keys, blocks, shoes, honey and a few more. The book gave enough information on the topic of gravity to inform the reader with out overwhelming them.
We would recommed this book to preschool aged children. This will introducte them to the concept of gravity in a way that they can easily understand.

All American History Vol 1 Student Reader ReviewWhen I first received Volume 1 of this curriculum, I thought it was going to be just another history textbook. However, I was pleasantly surprised! This one is unique and worth considering for your children.
The reader is excellent and the information is well presented. I think students will enjoy the text. Each unit includes easy-to-read text, illustrations of famous people and events, maps, and a section on the impact of the unit's events on our nation. The illustrations, however, are black and white which makes it somewhat less interesting than a similar book in color. Maybe a future edition will add color illustrations.
What I like the most is the activity book! Each unit includes activity worksheets to accompany the text. The fun part is that Celeste has included small images of famous people and flags to cut out and paste on the worksheets. Visual learners and your younger children will like this part and it will help them to remember what they learned. The worksheets also include a fill in the blank and multiple choice quiz to check older student's memory, as well as map work and additional ideas and resources for further study.
This curriculum comes in three parts: The Student Reader, a Student Activity Book, and the Teacher Guide with Answer Key. Normally, I don't like having to purchase a separate teacher book, but in this case, it's not that expensive ($16.95) and it is well worth getting. It includes a lot of background information as well as additional activities that will make multi-level teaching a lot easier. For instance, in the lesson on the Revolutionary War, students will make invisible ink secret messages, create a newspaper, make candles, go on a nature hike to identify trees and animals, learn how to fly and store a flag, and much more.
I particularly recommend this to parents who have visual learners and who have to teach multiple grade levels at one time. The author recommends it to be used for grades 5-8, but I would not be afraid to use parts of it with younger children. All American History Vol 1 Student Reader OverviewHaving taught American history a number of times, each time writing (and re-writing) her own materials, Celeste has shared her love of history with many students in her homeschool classes. Designed to be engaging and written in a comfortable style, All American History reads like a good book -- bringing America's story to life piece by piece. Containing hundreds of images and dozens of maps, All-American History Volume I is a complete year's curriculum for students in grades 5 - 8 when combined with the Student Activity Book and Teacher's Guide. It is also adaptable for younger and older students. The first volume covers Exploration through 1840. Each week includes a chapter from the Reader, maps, forms, and review questions in the Activity Book, and plenty of hands-on and further research ideas in the Teacher Guide. (As well as great teaching tips, ANSWERS to everything, and a great book list!) The teacher book also provides additional hands-on and further research ideas for the younger students you may use this with.

The Student from Zombie Island: Conquering the Rumor Monster ReviewThe Student From Zombie Island by Michael J. Moorehead

This book is absolutely adorable. The illustrations are wonderful and really make the story come to life for readers. The story is so funny my grandson could not stop laughing.

The story teaches kids what can happen when rumors start. It's hard enough being a new kid at school, but even harder when kids have preconceived ideas of who you are.

I would recommend this book to not only kids and adults but it would be great in the classroom for story time.

It is hard to believe the author is so young himself. Michael, you have really hit the nail on the head in this book. Excellent job and I am sure you will one day be a bestselling author.

Planet Earth (Time-Life Student Library) ReviewI use multiple copies of this text in my fifth grade class to teach landforms, and weather. This book is way better than any textbook I have ever seen. Each topic has full color pictures, and easy child friendly text. The key vocabulary words are in bold print, and the index makes for easy finding of information. The hard back has kept up well in my room this year, as it is treated like the other text books I issue the students (we all know what happens to those). I could not be more pleased with this book. I highly recomend this book to anyone researching physical science.Planet Earth (Time-Life Student Library) OverviewDescribes the earth sciences and examines volcanoes, earthquakes, mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans, rocks, minerals, weather, and the atmosphere.

Student Atlas: 5th Edition (Student Atlas (DK)) ReviewMy 6 year old (who is an advanced reader) LOVES this book! And for the most part, we love it too. I wish it had more details about certain things, but then I guess the book would be more than one book, lol! Cross referencing in the index would be nice. I had to explain why "America" wasn't listed. However, the fact that my 6 year old was using the index and table of contents speaks to how easy these books are for kids to use. DK has never disappointed and I'm sure this will be another well used, well read book in our home.Student Atlas: 5th Edition (Student Atlas (DK)) OverviewThis user-friendly reference is the fifth edition of a foundation World Atlas for students 10-14 years old.The reader will gain experience in using and understand both large- and small-scale maps. The American Heritage Student Science Dictionary ReviewI bought this book for my 11 year old son. Our encyclopedia set was a bit overwhelming for him so I thought a science dictionary would be less intimidating. He just loves it. He spends hours just flipping pages and reading entries that interest him. Definitions are concise yet not over simplified with plenty of examples and pictures to keep everything clear. Major topics are discussed in length making this more than just a dictionary. I enjoy browsing through it myself. Science is fascinating when properly explained. He brought it to school and the other kids all agreed that this book is "cool". This is an excellent book for adults and children. This is a must have book for your reference collection. The American Heritage Student Science Dictionary Overview
