Basic Russian Book 1, Student Edition (Bk. 1) ReviewThis book has reasonable approximations of Russian pronunciation, and lots of grammar, but some of the words are slightly dated. Most of the names of cities are the USSR versions, not the Russian (i.e. Leningrad, not St. Petersburg). Otherwise, though, the examples are good and the exercises can be interesting. It was extremely helpful for him because it was interesting and cut right to the chase. It doesn't blog the reader down with unnecessary information and is written in such a way that allows the reader to capture the most important details of the topic in an interesting way. I would highly recommend this book for junior high through high school. (Even if High Schoolers have another book, this book does a great job of simplifying the information so kids can remember the importance of the topic.) I have seen several textbooks that contain so much information, and the kids don't retain the information shortly after they finish the course. Algebra With Trigonometry for College Students ReviewI wish I could give this book three and a half stars instead of four. For me, this book was good for reviewing topics already covered in class but it doesn't explain concepts in a way that it could stand on it's own. Many of the topics were difficult to understand without my lecture notes. What I do love about the book is that it gives you a lot of practice problems. Also, I should mention my class is using a different version of this book but I was still able to follow along. English Grammar In Use with Answers and CD ROM: A Self-study Reference and Practice Book for Intermediate Students of English ReviewAs an English teacher, I use this book as my grammar bible. This book comes in two volumes: one for beginners and one for intermediate students. Each book covers over 100 grammar points. Each point gets two pages. On one page there is an excellent explanation of the grammar point along with examples. On the facing page, lots of grammar exercises are provided.
I don't use this as my classroom text since the activities don't lend themselves to communication. However, the communicative texts I do use either have poor or non-existant grammar explanations. When students have difficult grammar questions, I often check with this book since the explanations are clear and easy to understand. If students request some practice homework, then I let them do the grammar exercises as homework. It really helps students improve their accuracy.
I definitely recommend this to English teachers and students who are studying English. It would be a great reference book, and a great self-study supplement for students. Grammar Girl Presents the Ultimate Writing Guide for Students ReviewIn the past, I've had writing guides that I've flipped through, maybe I've read a page or two if I've needed to look up a specific issue, but this is the first time I've ever read a writing guide all the way through. This guide is entertaining!
Grammar Girl, because of her training in language and in the hard sciences, understands how to explain the importance of proper usage for clarity and she also explains when sometimes rules exist out of tradition. She also explains grammar myths and how to handle people who still buy into them. Her examples are easy to understand and fun (I especially like the section on misplaced modifiers). The quick and dirty tips and the pop quizzes throughout are also fun and handy.
Other bonuses include tips that perhaps were not designed specifically to help ESL learners, but would still be immensely helpful for such students. Tips like FANBOYS and ordering adjectives, for example, are things that many native speakers take for granted, but having them described simply but completely is helpful for any user of the English language.
Also included are tips for drafting and proofreading one's own writing. Additionally, she gives tips that as a comp teacher, I've tried to drill into my students' minds, like "show, don't tell," "avoid cliches like the plague," and "you need to know if a website is credible." I am so happy I have Grammar Girl to back me up on these points.
Personal anecdote: A couple of years ago, I was teaching comma rules to a technical writing class. I was trying to explain restrictive elements and nonrestrictive elements to the class and several of the students weren't getting it. They were frustrated and I was frustrated. As I read the section in this book about restrictive elements and nonrestrictive elements, I realized that if I'd just explained it the way Grammar Girl did, a whole lot of headaches would have been prevented. This book is coming with me to school every day so that when a grammar or usage question comes up, I can simply take Grammar Girl's wording and examples to explain it much more succinctly than I am often able on my own.(It's hard to come up with sentence examples on the fly, have you noticed?)
As a teacher, I have seen many writing handbooks, most of which cost upwards of $50. This book is a delight-- not only is it the best one I've seen in that it is fun, complete, and user-friendly, but it's also truly inexpensive. I am requiring it for my college composition class this fall, and I recommend it to every high school, ESL, and college writing teacher out there. Even if you don't require it as a text, you should still have it on hand in your book bag (like me) or have a copy or two in your classroom. Scholastic Sanskrit: A Manual for Students (Treasury of the Indic Sciences) ReviewI had the good fortune to study Sanskrit for several years at an Ivy League University. Unfortunately, I was never able to take a class that involved a great deal of use of the commentaries that seem to accompany all major Sanskrit texts. I would just use them, when I could, to find word divisions, undo sandhi, etc.
Several years ago, I began to try to teach myself the commentatorial style. A former professor told me that the only works he knew of in Western languages on this style were a chapter in Teach Yourself Sanskrit Complete Course (Teach Yourself Language Complete Courses) and a German work, Nominale Ausdrucksformen im wissenschaftlichen Sanskrit - written in - at least to me - an impenetrable style of German, though I am told it is an essential text.
Then I ordered "Scholastic Sanskrit". I can not overemphasize how valuable it has become to me in the few short weeks I have owned it. It serves both as a reference text, and a teaching tool. It explains with example after example all the formulaic expressions that occurr in Sanskrit commentaries, such as ityarthah, -adi, etena...iti, and on and on and on!
The style is completely lucid and seems geared towards those, like myself, who are trying to learn this style without the benefit of a teacher. I have read only about the first 50 pages or so, but, with this text in hand, I am now able to see nuances and meaning in commentaries, where before I had just found frustrating confusion.
The authors recommend using the text in conjuction with the Anubandhas of Panini (Publications of the Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit), which I have also found quite helpful.
I am using "Scholastic Sanskrit" along with Panditaraja Jagannatha's Gangalahari: With the commentary by Sri Sadasiva & English translation. This text provides a Sanskrit commentary on the poem with a literal - and thoughtful - English translation. I cannot reccommend either of the books too highly for those trying to learn how to read Sanskrit commentaries without a guru. (I can also thoroughly reccommend the Ramopakhyana - The Story of Rama in the Mahabharata: A Sanskrit Independent-Study Reader )
My only negative comment on the book is that the indexes in the back sometimes provide references that are off by 2-4 pages. A minor point.

Since the majority of expository texts in Sanskrit are composed in the form of commentaries on earlier texts, this Manual will be of great use to many Sanskrit translators. Furthermore, because many philosophical and scientific texts are written in the style of formal debate using the same basic principles, the features covered in the manual are useful for reading all expository texts, whether they are commentaries or not. From a short introduction on the history of the language till complex grammar structures. The use of the International Phonetic Alphabet helps a lot in the pronounciation (if you don't have acces to a native speaker). I enjoy the way they tie all the stories into science, social studies and non-fiction articles. They also have good writing prompts for the writing assignments that draw upon a young person's own experiences. It seems to tie together all their prior knowledge, current knowledge and then give them a little more knowledge than they had before. The poetry is fun, also. Prentice Hall Writing and Grammar: Communication in Action (Gold, Grade 9; Student Edition) ReviewAs a retired teacher who homeschools, I was looking for a really good grammar book for my grandson. He suffers from dyslexia and has struggled through Spec.Ed. classes since 2nd grade. I felt that public school wasn't challenging him enough because he has a high I.Q. I'm trying to get him ready for high school and get him caught up on all the skills that weren't introduced to him because he was in Spec. Ed. He really finds this grammar book easy to follow because it is so organized. He says that now he doesn't "feel stupid". He feels that when he goes back to public school for 8th grade next year that he will be where he needs to be. He doesn't feel left behind anymore and believe it or not it has helped his reading skills also. Suddenly he is paying attention to his spelling also. Hopefully our family can get him well on his way to being college-bound like the rest of us. I may order another set of the workbooks because I have another grandson with dyslexia coming up.
