Because Writing Matters: Improving Student Writing in Our Schools ReviewAlthough people familiar with recent research on teaching writing might feel as though this book is something of a broken record, I was very pleased with it. For one, it is written in a way that is easy to understand, and it is broken down into categories that make sense and are coherent in their organization. Also, I found the advice to be specific enough for me to apply to my classroom (high school) without excluding bits of advice that would be helpful for teachers of older or younger students. One huge benefit, as sad as it is, is that this book is really short. I tend to feel pretty intimidated by 300 and 400 page textbooks about teaching writing, but this slim volume was not difficult to get through and still provided me with a wealth of information on both theory and practice.
The only reason this is getting four instead of five stars is that there is not a whole lot of brand new information here. Anyone who's been keeping up with journals and other publications will have heard most of this stuff 100 times already. If, however, you're new to the scene, are looking to get caught up, are trying to institute writing-across-the-curriculum programs at your school, or just want a handy summary of the latest theories, this volume is right for you.Because Writing Matters: Improving Student Writing in Our Schools OverviewBecause Writing Matters examines the myths and realities surrounding the teaching of writing in schools. Downing's Teaching Literacy to Students With Significant Disabilities is a practical guide to opening one's mind regarding the definition of literacy, engaging all students in literacy activities, and keeping one's expectations appropriate for all learners, especially those with significant disabilities. Included in the book are current research findings, information regarding literacy goal setting for students with significant disabilities, and practical methods to adapting and modifying literacy to make it accessible for all learners.
After reading the first chapter of this book, I immediately committed to having it become a permanent staple on my professional bookshelf. Not only does it challenge educators in an ethical way to consider their own viewpoints, biases, etc., but it provides research, experience, and ideas to help educators adhere to best practice and include all learners in the beneficial and necessary acquisition of literacy skills. The section entitled, "What is Literacy?" (page 2) was an excellent way to introduce the concept. Before all students will be able to have access to true literacy instruction, teachers must challenge themselves and their definitions in order to truly do what's best for all of their students. Moreover, the section on "Identifying Literacy Goals" (page 38) provided a practical way to ensure that the goals I set for my students are in line with 1) their best interests, 2) their present capabilities, and 3) a realistic, practical, and beneficial end. This book is one that I can refer back to and use as a reference. McCormick's book provides a very sound basis for understanding all aspects of literacy instruction for special needs populations as it relates to assessment and instructional interventions.
I especially apprecite that four chapters are devoted to assessment. Excellent. She provides a very thorough analysis of the different types and purposes of assessment and includes informal assessment along with formal assessment.
This is not designed to be a beginnng text for literacy instruction. It is designed to build upon an existing body of knowledge related to literacy instruction. It would be benificial for all classroom teachers to understand, however, it is especially suited for reading specialists and special education LD instructors who teach literacy.

SRA Decoding Strategies (Decoding B1 Student Book) ReviewThis is the student workbook for a good remedial reading program designed to correct poor reading habits and help a child learn to decode words better and faster. Fluency levels rise as decoding improves. The complete set with teacher materials and student text is required to use this program. Although this is one level of an over-all program, it can stand as a unit all on its own. Students with more severe problems should start in an earlier level and those needing further work could move on to level C. There is a placement test located in all the teacher guides and can sometimes be found on the Internet.
This program works well with a minimum of a third grade level child or above who has some reading problems and does not read at an adequate rate. The stories are fun and relevant. Lessons involve "chapters" of a high interest story each day. The child looks forward to finding out the next installment of the story while learning valuable skills in decoding words within text. It is easy to use-no lesson preparation. Everything is "scripted" and tells you what to say and do and what is required of the student.
This program was designed for a classroom situation, but adapts very easily to homeschooling. This program brought my struggling 3rd grader up to grade level in just 65 lessons.
