Prentice Hall US History: United States History: Survey Edition: Student Edition (NATL) ReviewMy daughter needed this for an online class and it shipped quickly, was in "new" condition and was $40 to $65 less than the online school wanted to charge. I had 1 email question to the seller before the book came and received an immediate and satisfactory answer. The Caddo Indians: Tribes at the Convergence of Empires, 1542-1854 (Centennial Series of the Association of Former Students Texas A & M University) ReviewIf there is just one book you buy this year on the Caddo Indians, let it be this one. This is a book for scholars. But it is also a book for the armchair history buff. Smith writes in a palatable style. In the end, it is the natural narrative that carries the story. This part of American history is missed in most public education. Sit back with a cold one and this book. I did.The Caddo Indians: Tribes at the Convergence of Empires, 1542-1854 (Centennial Series of the Association of Former Students Texas A & M University) Overview

TimeLinks: Fifth Grade, The United States, Volume 1 Student Edition ReviewI used this textbook for my daughter's 5th grade homeschooling curriculum. This book is the first volume in a series of two. My guess would be that volume 2 is for 6th grade social studies. Volume 1 starts with pre-colonial America, explaining the way of life of major Native American groups. It then moves to the early exploration of America by Europeans and their interactions with native populations. I explains the effects on culture, disease and diets due to the interactions amongst the two groups. It then covers the exploration and colonization by the British, Spanish, French and Dutch in North America and the colonial way of life. The book ends with the American Declaration of Independence, American victories, and the end of the war. Each lesson was short and to the point. There are basic questions at the end of each lesson to enforce concepts learned, and there are review and assessments at the end of each different Unit. There is a small Geography handbook at the end of the book, covering the basics of geography. I found the book was very well written for the target age group.TimeLinks: Fifth Grade, The United States, Volume 1 Student Edition Overview

It has all the basic American history you want but is devided up in a logical sequence to help the student get a big picture view of what the culture is like at the time and what is happening historically. PACEMAKER UNITED STATES HISTORY STUDENT EDITION FOURTH EDITION 2004 (PACEMAKER US HISTORY) ReviewI purchased this book as a resource for a U.S. History class my high school son was taking on line. It was extremely helpful for him because it was interesting and cut right to the chase. It doesn't blog the reader down with unnecessary information and is written in such a way that allows the reader to capture the most important details of the topic in an interesting way. I would highly recommend this book for junior high through high school. (Even if High Schoolers have another book, this book does a great job of simplifying the information so kids can remember the importance of the topic.) I have seen several textbooks that contain so much information, and the kids don't retain the information shortly after they finish the course. I feel anyone who reads this will stand a better chance of retaining what they learn because it doesn't provide unnecessary details.PACEMAKER UNITED STATES HISTORY STUDENT EDITION FOURTH EDITION 2004 (PACEMAKER US HISTORY) OverviewStudent Edition - The full-color hardcover Student Edition provides clearly defined examples, controlled vocabulary support, and frequent skills practice.

The McGraw-Hill Handbook (hardcover) - 2009 MLA & APA Update, Student Edition ReviewItem was as described and I was very pleased with the transaction. I received the shipment on time as well. The McGraw-Hill Handbook (hardcover) - 2009 MLA & APA Update, Student Edition OverviewAs we wrote the first edition of The McGraw-Hill Handbook, our students were in our minds, acting as our chief consultants. We knew that their perspectives on college life were different from those of previous generations of students, and so were their expectations. We understood that they needed a handbook for the twenty-first century, with state-of-the-art resources on writing, researching, and graphic design. They might be using a handbook in an English composition class at 9:00 AM, but at 10:00 AM they might be preparing PowerPoints for a speech course, and at 11:00 AM they might need the handbook to help with a history assignment. More than any other textbook, their handbook was their guide, not just to writing, but also to learning in college. In revising the second edition, we have endeavored to make it an even stronger and more varied resource for achieving excellence in the ever-changing digital environment that students confront in college.

America: Pathways to the Present: Modern American History (Student Edition) ReviewI needed this textbook for my History class, and am very happy with it so far. American History The Early Years, Student Edition ReviewWe are a homeschool family, and I purchased this book for myself as an overview of American History. It's been a while since I was in school, and I felt like I needed a better grasp of what happened and when. This book was perfect for that. It seems to be a highschool (maybe 10th grade) textbook, so it would probably be pretty boring for kids, but it was so easy to read and understand for me as an adult. It was perfect for the reason I bought it.American History The Early Years, Student Edition Overview

And Still We Rise: The Trials and Triumphs of Twelve Gifted Inner-city High School Students ReviewThis gripping immersion into inner city school life makes the perfect companion read to Tracy Kidder's "Among Schoolchildren". From a nice, safe, concerned, caring enviornment, where the problems are understandable and manageable in "Among Schoolchildren"; to a place where success is measured not merely by acheivement but by the tremendous obstacles students must overcome merely to be in school, in this gripping, similarly styled work. The two books are a startling picture of the tremendous gulf of opportunity and enviornment at the spectrum ends of our society.
I strongly recommend both books, to everyone; not just parents, teachers or those who are usually associated with "education" interests. "And Still We Rise.." is not merely a vision of a brutal social/educational reality that must be addressed, but a poignant drama, as well. The young people whose stories are followed are the heroes of the most brutal battles raging today; crime, drugs, racism, and a culture of despair and degradation. These are the best and the brightest ... they are forced to face obstacles that should be reserved only for those who have transgressed horribly against society.
The incidental intrusion of the writer into this jouranlistic narrative is the only jarring note to be found in an otherwise seamless view. The unfortunate, even tragic circumstances that cause that intrusion, however, are understandable, from a human standpoint, even if they are inexcusable as viewed through the prism of journalistic purity.
An emmimently readable, engaging work. Recommended. And Still We Rise: The Trials and Triumphs of Twelve Gifted Inner-city High School Students Overview

Steck-Vaughn America's Story: Student Edition 2006 (Amer Story) ReviewI am a teacher of learning disabled children and adults. As such, I am always looking for easy but interesting material for my students. America's History is, surprisingly, one of those books.
I was introduced to the book by an adult student. Almost a non-reader, as he slowly learned to read, this book was used. He was absolutely enthralled by it. As a slow learner in school, he never learned anything about the history of our country, so every page was new and exciting to him. It starts with the early explorers and visitors to our coasts, then brings Pilgrims and immigrants to the country, and continues on through the years with the colonization, industrialization, wars, common people, and famous men and women.
The book is interestingly written and holds attention by short paragraphs and easy vocabulary, yet covers all of the major concepts and history. But it never talks down to the reader. Adult learners need to have things expressed at their own adult level, but too often, unfamiliar words and too much repetition defeat the purpose. Comprehension, too often overlooked, is easily grasped by this good effort. And even at this level, better readers can also enjoy the book, because it is telling things that many adults have forgotten about their own country. It refreshes without boring. (Even the teacher often enjoys the refresher course !)
Try it with your own children, for example. I think you'll find it both interesting and easily understood.
The book was so useful and so interesting that I even bought one for the student who brought it to my attention. Don't you think he deserved it?Steck-Vaughn America's Story: Student Edition 2006 (Amer Story) Overview

The Enduring Vision: A History of the American People (Student Text) ReviewI used this book in my AP US History class and it was great as an introduction into the depths of American History. It will point you in the right direction, but of course, you cannot cover over four hundred years with complementary charts, timelines, etc. in a reasonably sized textbook. I strongly recommend this book. It is unaffected by the conservative influence over education. Every negative part, as well as the positive one is told. Truth be told, it is told from a liberal leaning standpoint, but at least it is brought to light. Further research is needed, although sometimes a simple venture on Wikipedia will clear up any questions that might arise from the reading. It is not a definitive volume; it will only give the most basic information in a broad range of topics but it's a great book. The Enduring Vision: A History of the American People (Student Text) OverviewThis text's clear and engaging narrative balances political, social, and cultural history within a clear chronological framework. The Fifth Edition features a thorough revision of the narrative, a complete redesign of the book, and an enhanced art program. The authors explore the enduring vision of the American people, a vision they describe as "a shared determination to live up to the values that give meaning to America." Each chapter has been revised to incorporate the most up-to-date scholarship, with special emphasis placed on technology and public health.

All American History Vol 1 Student Reader ReviewWhen I first received Volume 1 of this curriculum, I thought it was going to be just another history textbook. However, I was pleasantly surprised! This one is unique and worth considering for your children.
The reader is excellent and the information is well presented. I think students will enjoy the text. Each unit includes easy-to-read text, illustrations of famous people and events, maps, and a section on the impact of the unit's events on our nation. The illustrations, however, are black and white which makes it somewhat less interesting than a similar book in color. Maybe a future edition will add color illustrations.
What I like the most is the activity book! Each unit includes activity worksheets to accompany the text. The fun part is that Celeste has included small images of famous people and flags to cut out and paste on the worksheets. Visual learners and your younger children will like this part and it will help them to remember what they learned. The worksheets also include a fill in the blank and multiple choice quiz to check older student's memory, as well as map work and additional ideas and resources for further study.
This curriculum comes in three parts: The Student Reader, a Student Activity Book, and the Teacher Guide with Answer Key. Normally, I don't like having to purchase a separate teacher book, but in this case, it's not that expensive ($16.95) and it is well worth getting. It includes a lot of background information as well as additional activities that will make multi-level teaching a lot easier. For instance, in the lesson on the Revolutionary War, students will make invisible ink secret messages, create a newspaper, make candles, go on a nature hike to identify trees and animals, learn how to fly and store a flag, and much more.
I particularly recommend this to parents who have visual learners and who have to teach multiple grade levels at one time. The author recommends it to be used for grades 5-8, but I would not be afraid to use parts of it with younger children. All American History Vol 1 Student Reader OverviewHaving taught American history a number of times, each time writing (and re-writing) her own materials, Celeste has shared her love of history with many students in her homeschool classes. Designed to be engaging and written in a comfortable style, All American History reads like a good book -- bringing America's story to life piece by piece. Containing hundreds of images and dozens of maps, All-American History Volume I is a complete year's curriculum for students in grades 5 - 8 when combined with the Student Activity Book and Teacher's Guide. It is also adaptable for younger and older students. The first volume covers Exploration through 1840. Each week includes a chapter from the Reader, maps, forms, and review questions in the Activity Book, and plenty of hands-on and further research ideas in the Teacher Guide. (As well as great teaching tips, ANSWERS to everything, and a great book list!) The teacher book also provides additional hands-on and further research ideas for the younger students you may use this with.

It Doesn't Take A Genius: Five Truths to Inspire Success in Every Student ReviewThis book is a fascinating mix of direct and indirect communication. The book's basic points are made directly
by its coauthors and then exemplified indirectly by the vignettes provided by an interesting assemblage of their
former students. The coauthors' arguments are clear and unlittered with academic jargon. (For example, what
academics would call "intertextuality" is discussed without invoking the guild's current buzzword.) Many of the
brief student contributions are surprisingly moving.
In characterizing one of Tommie Lindey's emphases, a student writer (Joseph Riley Whitfield Jr.) in fact aptly
describes the book: "...a complex message delivered in common language [that] does not lose its sense of
the profound."
My advice to readers would be to read each of the "five truths" sections, breaking off reading after each to ponder
what it means for them. Considered and pondered, the book has practical and uplifting messages that have made, and will make, a difference. It Doesn't Take A Genius: Five Truths to Inspire Success in Every Student Overview
Two award-winning educators give you strategies to reachout and instill skills for success in your kids or students

With multiple teaching awards to their credit, Tommie Lindsey and Randall McCutcheon have taught every type of student--from the underprivileged to the ordinary. It Doesn't Take a Genius gives you first-hand access to the strategies that have inspired students to succeed, even in impoverished districts.

Entertaining and packed with practical advice, this motivating narrative is organized into five principles, each composed of "bite-size" lessons and testimonials from the teachers' greatest success stories.
